[Welcome/Call to Order]

[00:00:04]

SO WE ARE STARTING HERE THAT 4: OH 3:00 P.M.

AND THE FIRST THING WE WILL DO IS PULL OUT THE AGENDA THAT DR. JACOBS SENT OVER TO US SO YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED THE MEETING MINUTES.

I BELIEVE IT WAS SENT OUT LAST NIGHT.

[Adoption of Meeting Agenda/Approval of January Meeting Minutes]

SO I'M GOING TO OPEN UP THE FLOOR REALLY QUICKLY TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY QUESTIONS IF NOT, THEN I WOULD LIKE TO MOTION TO ADOPT THE JANUARY MEETING MINUTES.

>> MOVED TO ADOPT.

>> SECOND.

>> ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

>> CAN ASK A QUESTION?

>> SORRY.

I WAS TRYING TO ASK A QUESTION.

I NOTICED IN THE MINUTES, IT WAS TALKING ABOUT THE CTE -- HOW DO I PUT IT -- DIVERSITY, I GUESS WITHIN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM I THINK IT'S SAD AND JUST HAD A DATA POINT AT 50 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS ARE CULTURALLY DIVERSE.

I WASN'T SURE.

THAT'S ACTUALLY NOT ACCURATE.

UNNATURAL WHAT THAT MEANT.

IT WAS UNDER THE PRESENTATION OF THE L STUDENTS.

>> I CAN WEIGH IN.

THEY CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE STUDENTS.

>> I WAS WONDERING IF IT WAS LINGUISTIC.

>> YES.

CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE.

>> I CAN PULL UP THE DOCUMENT IF IT WOULD HELP TO ADD.

>> THAT'S OKAY.

I JUST WANTED TO CLARIFY HOW THAT WAS BEING USED.

SO THAT'S FINE.

WE CAN MOVE FORWARD.

>> WHAT WE CAN DO IS WE CAN PUT THAT WORDING IN THEIR, THE LINGUISTIC PART, AND JESSICA, IF YOU COULD JUST EMAIL ME THE CORRECT WORDING, WE COULD STILL MOVE TO APPROVE IT WITH ADDING THAT IF EVERYBODY IS OKAY WITH THAT.

CULTURALLY LINGUISTIC.

>> YES.

>> OKAY.

>> I AM MOTION FOR APPROVAL WITH THE MINUTES WITH THE ADDITION OF THAT CHANGE.

>> I SECOND IT.

>> ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

>> THANK YOU.

SO THE NEXT ITEM ON THE AGENDA GOES RIGHT -- WE JUMP RIGHT INTO OUR DISCUSSION ON

[New Business (Part 1 of 2)]

THE PERKINS BUDGET PRESENTATION.

SO DOCTOR JACOBS I WILL HAND THAT OVER TO YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MELISSA.

THE FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IS THAT THIS YEAR'S PLAN DID NOT NEED A NEW LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT.

AND SOME OF YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT THE LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT TO THE ASSESSMENT WAS CREATED IN 2019/20 SO WE USE AT THAT YEAR, LAST YEAR, AND WE ARE ALLOWED TO USE IT THIS YEAR.

I THINK THEY HAD PITY ON US BECAUSE IT WAS A PANDEMIC YEAR SO NEXT FALL WE WILL START THE NEW PROCESS FOR REVIEWING WHAT IS NEEDED IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION AS FAR AS COURSES, EQUIPMENT, AND THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SURVEYS AND A LOT OF INTERVIEWING TO CREATE THAT DOCUMENT.

ESSENTIALLY, THE BUDGET PLAN LAST YEAR, THE PLAN WAS FOR 329,607 AND $0.94.

THIS YEAR IT IS 332,541 AND $0.30.

THAT IS AN INCREASE OF 2933 AND $0.40.

ABOUT $3000 MORE FOR THIS YEAR.

SO $3000 IS NOT A LOT OF MONEY THAT REALLY NEEDS TO BE MOVED AROUND TO SUSTAIN LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENTS.

HOWEVER, LET ME SHOW YOU IN THE DOCUMENT HOW THE BUDGET IS CATEGORIZED.

SO THERE IS 36,000 THAT STAYED THE SAME TO PERMIT TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS

[00:05:01]

TO GO TO CONFERENCES.

THOSE ARE PERKINS GRANTS USABLE FUNDS.

15,000 TO PURCHASE HARDWARE FOR EL STUDENTS.

NOW, THESE TWO CATEGORIES ARE REQUIRED IN THE BUDGET.

A REPORT BEING CONDUCTED, IT'S A COMPLETE REPORT THAT GRADUATES ARE CALLED YEAR AFTER GRADUATION TO SEE HOW THEY ARE CTE COURSES HAVE HELPED THEM, THE CREDENTIAL HAS HELPED THEM.

AND WE MUST HAVE AT LEAST A 75 PERCENT RESPONSE RATE PER PERKINS GRANT.

FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS, THE PERSON THAT HAS BEEN CONDUCTING THIS SURVEY FOR US HAS HAD A STIPEND OF $3000 PLUS THE MEDICARE AND FICA I CHOSE THIS YEAR TO INCREASE IT TO 4000+ THOSE FICA AND MEDICARE BECAUSE OF THE WORK THAT SHE'S DOING.

THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT IT TAKES.

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE TRYING TO CALL DUTY 300 STUDENTS IS QUITE A FEAT IN ITSELF.

SO THAT IS AN INCREASE OF $1076.50.

THE NEXT CATEGORY IS THE CATEGORY TO INITIATE OR IMPROVE AND EXPAND THE MODERNIZED LABS, AND THIS IS FOR THE NECESSARY REQUIRE COMPUTERS IN THE DIFFERENT PROGRAM AREAS.

WE ARE LEAVING THAT AT THE SAME AMOUNT, $133,032.38.

AND THAT IS TO BUY THE REQUIRED ROTATIONAL EQUIPMENT COMPUTERS FOR THE LABS.

THE NEXT THREE CATEGORIES HERE I HAVE LOOKED AT THE NEEDS OF THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS, AND THIS PAST YEAR BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, MANY TEACHERS HAVE PIVOTED TO ONLINE RESOURCES.

A LACK OF SOFTWARE, E-BOOKS AND REALLY, I THINK FINDING THAT STUDENTS ARE REALLY DOING WELL WITH IT.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO MOVE TEXTBOOKS OUT ENTIRELY, BUT WE WILL BE PITTING TWO MORE ONLINE RESOURCES.

I HAD TO DO A LOT OF BUDGET TRANSFERS TO CREATE THIS CATEGORY TO PAY FOR THAT SOFTWARE AND E-BOOKS, AND SO WITH THAT SAID, I LOOKED AT WHERE I TRANSFERRED FROM

EACH OF THESE CATEGORIES, ONE BEING FROM THE TRADE (CROSS-TALK] >> I'M SORRY?

>> THE TRADE AND INDUSTRIAL.

>> AND ANOTHER FROM THE STEMM ACADEMY AND CREATED THIS CATEGORY HERE FOR $30,000.

IT HAD $1000 ORIGINALLY.

SO THE DECREASE IN THE ABOVE THREE PLUS THE $8000 AND IT TOOK SOME OF THE INCREASE FROM THE 329 TO 332,000 AND PUT IT IN THEIR AND CREATED THIS UPDATED REQUIRED ONLINE SOFTWARE PRESCRIPTION RESOURCES.

THE NEXT CATEGORY, 18,000 TO ASSIST OUR SPECIAL POPULATION IN MONTROSE TO ATTEND THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS REGIONAL STATE AND NATIONAL CONFERENCES.

THE NEXT ONE IS FOR SUMMER INSTRUCTION FOR SUMMER BRIDGE WITH A HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY THE TEACHERS THAT ARE DOING THAT SUMMER ACADEMY.

THE NEXT CATEGORY IS STAYING THE SAME, ALSO $24,759.50 TO PAY FOR THE CURRICULUM WRITING THE TEACHERS DO TO ALIGN WITH BUSINESS INDUSTRY STANDARDS.

[00:10:08]

THIS LAST CATEGORY IS THE INDIRECT COST.

THIS IS WHERE I TOOK THE -- WAS DECREASED BECAUSE LAST YEAR IT WAS 4.7 PERCENT, AND THIS YEAR, IT'S THREE PERCENT, SO IT'S NO FUN THOUSAND $685.67.

SO THAT DECREASE WAS PUT BACK INTO THE ONLINE SOFTWARE AND E-BOOKS.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT? IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE SAME.

I THINK THE ONLY DIFFERENCES THAT WE CREATED THIS DIFFERENT CATEGORY FOR THE SOFTWARE AND E-BOOK SUBSCRIPTIONS.

>> I JUST HAVE A QUESTION.

WOULD IT BE HELPFUL -- I WOULDN'T REALLY KNOW THIS WAS A NEW CATEGORY UNLESS WE ACTUALLY PUT SOMEWHERE IN PARENTHESES THAT THIS IS A NEW CATEGORY TO HELP THE READER.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S THAT IMPORTANT OR NOT FOR THIS REPORT, BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION THAT.

>> ABSOLUTELY, SURE.

I COULD ACTUALLY PUT -- JUST GOING TO PUT OBJECT.

THANK YOU, ALAN.

OKAY.

>> I JUST HAVE ONE QUESTION.

DR. JACOBS, I WOULD OBVIOUSLY GO FORWARD WITH WHAT YOU PUT OUT HERE.

YOU ARE THE EXPERT.

I WAS WONDERING IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO PUT ALL OF THE MONEY TO STAFF SINCE THAT'S WHERE WE MADE THE MOST HELP SO THAT WE HAVE STAFF IN PLACE TO HELP THE EXISTING STUDENTS GET TO WHERE THEY WOULD BE?

>> I'M NOT REALLY SURE -- >> I KNOW THAT THERE ARE SOME CAPACITY CONSTRAINTS WITH STAFF JUST IN GENERAL, AND I WAS WONDERING COULD WE JUST PUT MONEY TO GET MORE STAFF TO HELP WITH SOME OF THAT CAPACITY?

>> WITH PERKINS YOU CAN ONLY USE FIVE PERCENT OF IT FOR A SALARY, SO I DO HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, AND I WISH YOU COULD USE THE MONEY FOR THAT, BUT I'M GOING TO BE REALLY HONEST WITH YOU, THE BULK OF OUR MONEY RIGHT NOW IS IN THIS COMPUTER CATEGORY HERE, BUT IT'S ESSENTIAL FOR OUR STUDENTS.

WHAT I WILL TELL YOU IS THAT THE COST OF STANDALONE COMPUTERS HAS GONE UP TREMENDOUSLY BUT WE ARE LOOKING AT MAYBE IN JUST THE BUSINESS LABS HAVING THE STANDALONE'S OR THE KEYBOARD TECHNIQUE AND EASE OF UTILIZING THE COMPUTER FOR WHATEVER ACTIVITY, BUT WE ARE LOOKING AT GOING PROBABLY TOWARDS MORE LAPTOPS BECAUSE THIS YEAR, EVEN IN THE T.V.

PRODUCTION, WE ALLOWED STUDENTS TO TAKE SOME OF THOSE COMPUTERS HOME TO HELP DO SOME OF THE EDITING AT HOME.

SO EVEN IF WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO AN ONLINE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM, WE WILL BE ABLE TO HAVE THE EQUIPMENT THAT THE KIDS CAN USE AT HOME.

>> GOT IT.

THANK YOU.

>> BUT THAT WAS A GREAT QUESTION.

THANK YOU, DAVID.

SO I'M GOING TO STOP SHARING THAT.

AND THEN I'M GOING TO SHARE THE PLAN OF STUDY.

EVERY YEAR WITH YOUR BUDGET, WE HAVE TO SEND IN TO THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION A NEW PLAN OF STUDY.

THIS YEAR, I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH NOVA, VIRGINIA TECH, PEOPLE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY.

TO WORK ON A PATHWAY FOR CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT.

MANY PEOPLE WILL SAY WHY DON'T WE JUST DO BUILDING TRADES OR CONSTRUCTION TRADES.

IN ONE OF THE REASONS IS THAT WITH SOME OF OUR UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS, THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GO INTO AN APPRENTICESHIP.

[00:15:01]

WHAT WE BELIEVE THIS ACTUALLY PROVIDES IS THAT IT LENDS A TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION AND BUSINESS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, TO PROGRAM AREAS TOGETHER, TO CREATE THE CONSTRUCTION AND MANAGEMENT PEACE SO THAT STUDENTS CAN GET A MORE COMPLETE AFTER NINTH AND 10TH GRADE WITH THE TECHNICAL DRAWING ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND THEN THE MATERIALS OF PROCESS THEY CAN BE A COMPLETE OR NINTH AND 10TH GRADE.

HE CAN GO ON AND GET A SEQUENCE WITH CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY.

THEY ARE GOING TO GET THE OSHA 10 CERTIFICATION SO THAT WE KNOW ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WILL BE SAFE ON THE JOB SITE.

SO THEN WHEN THEY GET TO THEIR SENIOR YEAR, SOME STUDENTS THAT CAN GO OUT ON A USE REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP CAN GO IN AND DO THE MANAGEMENT PEACE.

SO OUR UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THIS PATHWAY AND NOT BE STOPPED -- STOCK WITH WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY GRADUATE.

THEY WILL BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM ALSO FOR THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT.

SOME OF OUR STUDENTS MAY WANT TO JUST BYPASS SOME OF THESE COURSES IN MANAGEMENT AND GO AND DO USE REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP STARTING IN THE 12TH GRADE.

SO WE BELIEVE THIS MANAGEMENT PEACE ALLOWS THE FLEXIBILITY TO BENEFIT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

SO WE HAVE TO SHOW THE CONNECTION TO NOVA AND THEY DO HAVE A CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES DEGREE AND WHILE THEY ARE AT NOVA THEY WILL BE ABLE TO WORK ON THEIR COURSES TO OBTAIN THEIR OSHA 30 CERTIFICATION.

AND THE BEST PART OF ALL OF THIS IS BRINGING VIRGINIA TECH AND NOVA TOGETHER AT THE SAME TABLE, THEY STARTED SEEING THE CONNECTION AND REALIZING THAT THEY HAVE TO START TALKING ABOUT THE TRANSFER OF CREDITS FROM NOVA TO VIRGINIA TECH AND THEY ARE VERY INTERESTED IN AND AND I BELIEVE BY THE TIME OUR STUDENTS GET TO THAT POINT, THEY WILL HAVE THAT OPTION.

TO GO ON TO THEIR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT OR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

SO WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND IT CREATES A GREAT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN A C.P.S., NOVA AND VIRGINIA TECH.

>> DO YOU NEED TO VOTE ON THIS?

>> I WANT TO SHOW ONE MORE THING AND THEN WE WILL DO A VOTE.

SO EVERY YEAR, THE ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT COMES OUT AND LAST WEEK, THE REPORT CAME OUT FOR 2019/20.

THIS WAS THE REPORT FOR OUR COMPLETERS WILL BE STUDENTS THAT GRADUATED THIS PAST JUNE.

YOU MUST REMEMBER WE WERE IN A PANDEMIC, WE STILL ARE.

AND COMPLETERS, CREDENTIALS, WERE NOT REALLY AT THE FOREFRONT.

WE WERE JUST TRYING TO GET AS MUCH CONSTRUCTION GOING AS WE COULD BUT CONSEQUENTLY OUR NUMBERS ARE SHOWING THAT WE ARE STILL NOT MAKING THE NON- POPULATION CATEGORY.

I'M GOING TO BE REALLY HONEST WITH YOU, I DON'T THINK WE WILL MAKE THIS 28 PERCENT TARGET UNTIL OUR HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY COURSES -- WE HAVE COMPLETERS AND GRADUATES OUT OF THERE.

BECAUSE MANY OF THOSE CLASSES ARE -- WE HAVE MALES IN THOSE CLASSES AND THEY ARE FEMALE DOMINATED.

OR AN EMT IS MALE-DOMINATED.

SO MANY FEMALE WILL GET PERCENTAGES OFF OF THAT.

CONSTRUCTION WILL ALSO GET IT WITH ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING, TECHNICAL DRAWING, BEING MALE-DOMINATED SO WE WILL GET CREDIT FOR THE FEMALES AND THE SAME THING WITH MATERIALS PROCESSES AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY.

NOW, HERE IS WHERE THE REAL IMPROVEMENT WILL NEED TO BEGIN.

THERE ARE A LOT OF REASONS WHY WE DID NOT MAKE THESE TARGETS THIS YEAR.

[00:20:08]

WE NEED TO REMEMBER AGAIN THAT THERE IS A PANDEMIC.

COMPLETERS WILL MAYBE NOT SHOW THE SYSTEM BECAUSE THE SYSTEM THAT IS CONNECTING OUR COMPLETERS.

OUR COMPLETERS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INPUTTED CORRECTLY INTO THE SYSTEM.

OUR BACKUP SPREADSHEET MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ACCURATE STUDENTS THAT DIDN'T PASS THE CREDENTIAL WERE NEVER RETESTED LAST YEAR BECAUSE WE WERE TESTING STUDENTS ESPECIALLY SENIORS.

STUDENTS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE CREDENTIAL TESTS LAST YEAR AS A SENIOR BUT THIS KIND OF THING CAN HAVE EFFECTS FOR UP TO 3 YEARS IF WE DON'T GET A HANDLE ON IT.

SO WE ARE GOING TO BE DEVELOPING AN IMPROVEMENT PLAN WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION THE DISTRICT DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL COUNSELING, TECHNOLOGY TEACHERS AND MIKKI KAUFMAN IS GOING TO HELP US WITH THIS ALSO.

WE NEED TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE EVERY STUDENT HAS BEEN A COMPLETE OR IF NOT WE NEED TO HELP THEM GET ENROLLED IN A COMPLETER AND WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE ARE TESTING STUDENTS AND LEVEL II COURSES.

WE NEED TO MAKE SURE IF THEY FAIL A CREDENTIAL WE RETEST THEM.

WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE TESTED AS COMPLETERS AND OUR IT SYSTEM AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WE HAVE TO COMMUNICATE WHAT A PATHWAY IS AND WHAT A COMPLETER IS TO OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS THAT HELP US REGISTER OUR STUDENTS.

AND I'M ALREADY ON THEIR SCHEDULE FOR APRIL 6.

SO I WOULD LIKE, IN JUNE, DEDICATE A GOOD PORTION OF THE JUNE MEETING TO THIS IMPROVEMENT PLAN TO IMPROVE WHERE WE DID NOT MEET THE BASEPOINT ARCHITECTURE.

I THINK IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT THAT WE REMEMBER THAT THE 2019/20 IS A BASELINE HERE FOR THE PERFORMANCE MEASURES AND IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES.

SO IT'S A GOOD INDICATOR FOR US WE NEED TO TAKE A BETTER LOOK AT THIS AND MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED THE IMPORTANT CREDENTIAL TESTS.

SO AT THIS TIME, MADAM CHAIR, I WOULD ASK FOR YOU TO CALL FOR A VOTE ON THE PLAN.

>> ALL RIGHT.

I WOULD LIKE TO CALL FOR A VOTE ON THE ANNUAL PERKINS PLAN.

SO I'M GOING TO RUN DOWN THE LIST OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

LINDSEY COOPER.

>> NOT HERE EITHER.

>> SHE IS.

SHE'S ON MUTE.

OKAY.

MAYBE WE WILL COME BACK TO LINDSAY.

AMY CREED? OCTAVIA (NAME? )?

>> ABSENT.

JESSICA (NAME? )? YAY.

>> I APOLOGIZE JOSEPH.

JOSEPH (NAME? ).

>> IS NO PROBLEM.

YAY.

>> JULIE KELLER.

>> ABSENT.

>> ALAN LOMAX.

>> YAY.

[00:25:02]

>> DAVID REMICK.

>> YAY.

>> MONICA WEST.

>> YAY.

>> LINDA (NAME? ).

>> YAY.

>> DOCTOR MICHELLE (NAME? ).

>> YAY.

>> AND WE ALSO HAVE (NAME? ) RAMIREZ.

I THINK I SAW COOL ON.

RULE?

>> HE WAS THERE BUT FOR SOME REASON ADULT SEE HIM ANYMORE.

>> I DON'T SEE HIM ANYMORE EITHER.

OKAY.

AND LINDSAY COOPER?

>> LINDSAY, YOU ARE ON MUTE.

>> AND MY VOTE IS FOR YAY.

SO TRICIA, WE WILL HAVE TO GO BACK FOR LINDSAY.

SEAN L I MET WITH HER AND SHE APPROVED.

SHE WILL BE A RIGHT IN.

>> OKAY.

ALL RIGHT.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS GO NOW? ARE REAPPROVED OR DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE REMAINING MEMBERS?

>> WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS GO AND MEET INDIVIDUALLY WITH THESE PEOPLE THAT WERE NOT HERE TODAY TO GET THEIR APPROVAL IN WRITING.

>> I JUST TALKED TO (INDISCERNIBLE) WHO SAID HE HAD A COMMUNICATION ISSUE BUT HE VOTES YAY.

>> CAN YOU JUST ASK HIM TO SEND IT IN AN EMAIL TO ME?

>> OKAY.

>> THANK YOU, NELSON.

>> DO WE HAVE A QUORUM RIGHT NOW? AND HAVE A MAJORITY SO WE HAVE A QUORUM AND THE MAJORITY HAVE APPROVED, SO THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH.

I DON'T KNOW IF WE NEED TO GO BACK TO EVERYBODY.

BUT I BELIEVE THAT TO THE PEOPLE ABOVE MY PAY GRADE.

>> SO YOU DO HAVE A QUORUM SO YOU COULD SAY THAT IT IS APPROVED BY THIS COMMITTEE, BUT IF THE RULES FOR THE PERKINS IS YOU NEED 100 PERCENT, THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO GET THAT IN WRITING AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, DOCTOR REEVES IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO VOTE ON THIS COMMITTEE.

BUT I'M GLAD SHE APPROVES.

>> OKAY.

DOCTOR JACOBS, DO YOU KNOW IF WE NEED 100 PERCENT APPROVAL FROM THE COMMITTED?

>> I HEARD FROM SHERRY THAT YES I HAVE TO HAVE EVERYBODY'S APPROVAL.

>> OKAY.

ALL RIGHT.

SO WE HAVE ALL OF THE VOTES FOR ALL OF THE ATTENDEES.

[Special Presentation]

AND THAT'S THE SPECIAL PRESENTATION THE MINNIE HOWARD REDEVELOPMENT CONCEPT DESIGN BY PERKINS EASTMAN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM.

SO I WILL HAND IT OVER TO THE SPEAKER.

>>MINNIE: GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYBODY.

CAN YOU HEAR ME OKAY? ALL RIGHT.

I AM ERICA AND I AM THE DIRECTOR OF CAPITAL PROGRAMS PLANNING AND DESIGN WITH A C.P.S.

AND WE ARE HAPPY TO BE WITH YOU TODAY TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT.

I SEE YOU ARE HERE MEDEA.

ARE YOU SHARING THE PRESENTATION?

>> YES.

>> GREAT.

IF YOU WANT TO PULL IT UP AND WE WILL GET STARTED.

SO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT OVER THE LAST I WANT TO SAY TWO AND A HALF YEARS.

WE ARE AT AN EXCITING TIME IN THE PROJECT WHERE WE ARE ACTUALLY WORKING ON THE DESIGN AND WE HAVE CONCEPTS OF THE DESIGN THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD IS GOING TO

[00:30:01]

VOTE ON WHEN THEY GET BACK FROM SPRING BREAK AND THAT WILL ALLOW US TO CONTINUE ON SCHEDULE.

SO GO AHEAD.

SOME OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL PRIORITIES, THE EDUCATIONAL DESIGN TEAM, WHICH I BELIEVE DOCTOR JACOBS IS A BARGRAPH, POTENTIALLY OTHERS OF YOU.

HAS BEEN WORKING VERY HARD THROUGHOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT IN IDENTIFYING OUR EDUCATIONAL PRIORITIES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT BUT REALLY JUST IN THINKING ABOUT THE KIND OF MORE BROADLY AND HOW IT RELATES TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DIVISION.

SOME OF THE KEY THINGS WE ARE FOCUSING ON IN THE MANY HOURS BUILDING ACROSS THE CAMPUSES THAT WE WILL MAKE UP THE HIGH SCHOOL ARE PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, SO MAKING SURE WE ARE PROVIDING THE SPACE AND THE ENVIRONMENT FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY INSTRUCTION IN ORDER TO INCREASE ACADEMIC OUTCOMES.

WE HAVE INDUSTRY ADVISORY BOARDS WHICH HAVE BEEN SET UP AND DOCTOR JACOBS HAS BEEN DOING A GREAT JOB MANAGING THOSE.

JUST FOCUS ON WORKFORCE ABOUT WHAT POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIPS DO WE HAVE OUT THERE FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND HOW CAN WE MAKE SURE THAT OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE GRADUATING AND ARE READY FOR WHATEVER THE NEXT STEP IS IN THEIR CAREER, IN THEIR LEARNING AND PROVIDING THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AT A YOUNGER AGE.

AND ALSO HELPING THE INDUSTRY ADVISORY BOARD IS HELPING US WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR OUR TEACHERS TO HELP THEM BE ABLE TO TEACH THE STUDENTS THE DIFFERENT FIELDS AND THE DIFFERENT EXCITING THINGS THAT THEY CAN DO FOLLOWING GRADUATION.

AND THEN AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR EQUITY FOR ALL STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2025, PROMOTING EQUITY, WE THINK ABOUT THIS AND FROM MY SIDE KIND OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE BUT THINK ABOUT HOW WE PROMOTE EQUITY BETWEEN THE CAMPUSES AND HOW WE THINK ABOUT WHICH DT HOW WE PROVIDE PROGRAM ACCESS THROUGHOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND WE MAKE SURE THAT THE CAMPUSES FEEL CONNECTED AND WE ARE ABLE TO REALLY ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS IN THEIR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

SO WHERE WE ARE NOW, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR SOME TIME.

WE'VE DONE A LOT OF PLANNING.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR A WHILE YOU KNOW WE HAVE THAT TO HIGH SCHOOL CONVERSATION ON THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTED FOR A CONNECTED NETWORK AND SO -- AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON A LOT OF ANALYSIS AT THE MILLIE HOWARD CAMPUS AND NOW WE ARE AT THE CONCEPT PHASE WHICH IS WHERE WE DEVELOP THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THE NEW MINNIE HOWARD AND SEE HOW THIS BUILDING WILL LOOK LIKE AND HOW WILL IT WORK.

AND PERKINS EASTMAN IS OUR ARCHITECT AND THEY WILL TALK SOON AND THEY ARE THE EXPERTS ON THIS BUT THEY HAVE REALLY TAKEN THE APPROACH OF WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO INSIDE THE BUILDING AND HOW DOES THAT TRANSLATE TO THE LOCAL FACULTY.

AND SO HE WILL WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SEEK HELP IN OUR BRIEF CONCEPT PRESENTATION FOR YOU TODAY.

AND THEN WE MOVE INTO SCHEMATICS AND DEFINED DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION JUST GETTING FURTHER AND FURTHER INTO THE DETAILS OVER THE NEXT YEAR OF DESIGN IN THE STARTING CONSTRUCTION AND HOPING TO OPEN THIS BUILDING IN SEPTEMBER 2024 FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

WE HAVE DONE SOME COMMUNITY -- WE DID A COMMUNITY SURVEY WHERE WE HAD 216 RESPONSES.

SO WE WERE AT SEVERAL COMMUNITY MEETINGS AS WELL OR WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THE CONCEPT AS WELL AS WHAT PEOPLE ARE HOPING TO SEE AT THE MINNIE HOWARD CAMPUS.

SOME OF THE QUESTIONS WE ASKED ON THE OUTCOMES OF THOSE, WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY OR STAFF OR STUDENTS, IN THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE MINNIE HOWARD CAMPUS WE HEARD THAT CAPACITY FOR STUDENT ENROLLMENT GROWTH IS NEEDED, WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE CLEARLY, EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS THE NEED WHICH IS WHY WE'RE DOING THIS PROJECT AS WELL AS WIKI SURE OUR SPACES ARE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTIVE AND THEN FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTIVE SO THAT THE BUILDING CAN BE ANYTHING IT WANTS TO BE IN THE FUTURE AS WELL AS ADJUST THOSE FLUCTUATIONS IN ENROLLMENT BUT ALSO CHANGE QUALITY LEARNING.

WE KNOW LEARNING CHANGES ALL THE TIME.

AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE ARE PROVIDING THOSE SPACES.

WE ASKED IF YOU WERE DESIGNING THE CAMPUS WITH FEATURES OF THE CYBER BUILDING WOULD YOU LIKE TO INCLUDE, AND WE HEARD A LOT OF INNOVATED AND TECH READY AND MAKING SURE THERE ARE HANDS-ON LEARNING SPACES WHICH ARE PRIMARY GOALS IN OUR DESIGN.

THEN WE TALKED ABOUT PRIORITIZING THE IDEAS THAT PEOPLE THINK ARE IMPORTANT TO THE DESIGN AND WE'VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT DESIGNING FOR THE LEARNERS FOR EDUCATION AS WELL AS COMMUNITY ACCESS TO THE FACILITY, MAKING SURE WE ARE USING THIS SPACE.

AND THEN THE BIGGEST CONCERNS AND WORRIES AND AS IS PRETTY STANDARD AT LEAST IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH ANY REDESIGN OR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT THE GREATEST BEING

[00:35:04]

TRAFFIC AND NOISE AND SAFETY DURING CONSTRUCTION AND AFTER.

I BELIEVE THE NEXT SLIDE AND TURNING ON DUTY OVER TO SEAN O'DONNELL WITH PERKINS EASTMAN TO START GOING THROUGH THE CONCEPTS UPDATE, IF YOU WILL.

>> THANK YOU.

GOOD AFTERNOON.

THANKS FOR INVITING US TO THE CONVERSATION TODAY.

I AM SEAN O'DONNELL AND AM IN CHARGE OF THE DESIGN TEAM WITHIN THE DESIGN TEAM, MY ROLE IS ON RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSLATING YOUR MISSION, YOUR VISION, YOUR EDUCATIONAL GOALS INTO SPACE.

SO WHAT I'M GOING TO DO THIS AFTERNOON IS WALK THROUGH SOME OF WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING TO MAKE THAT TRANSLATION.

EDUCATIONAL ASPIRATIONS INTO ARCHITECTURAL ASPIRATIONS.

THEN SHARE SOME OF THE CONFLICT MERGING OR THAT ARE UNDERWAY RIGHT NOW.

SO WITH THAT, LET ME START BY SAYING THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTENSIVE OUTREACH PROCESS WHEN WE BEGAN THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER ON THE PROJECT, BUT A LOT OF WORK HAD BEEN DONE PRIOR TO US JOINING THE TEAM SO THE FIRST THING WE DID WAS DIG INTO ALL THE WORK THAT HAD BEEN DONE BY BOTH THE EDUCATIONAL DESIGN LABOR GROUP OTHERS IN THE SUPERINTENDENTS AND CERTAINLY THE VISION FOR EQUITY FOR ALL AS WE SEE ON THE SLIDE HERE IS WELL.

ESTABLISHED BY THE DISTRICT AND UPON THE FACE WE HAVE A CASE LOTS OF STAKEHOLDERS THROUGH THIS PROCESS AND FOCUS GROUPS AND MEETINGS AND SCHOOL LEADERSHIP MEETINGS TALK ABOUT THOSE AS WE GO THROUGH THAT PROCESS CONTINUES THIS IS A WHOLE DIAGRAM SO DOESN'T SHOW EVERY SPACE IN THE BUILDING THAT SHOWS SORT OF CONSOLIDATIONS OF TYPES OF SPACES AND HOW THEY MIGHT RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER AS WE START TO PUT ALL OF THE PARTS TOGETHER TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT WE SEE AS A POWERFUL LEARNING COMMUNITY ON CAMPUS.

SOME OF THE THINGS YOU SEE OR ACCESS POINTS TO THE BUILDING HAVING GREAT AND NOTABLE AND SAFE MAIN ENTRANCES INTO THE BUILDING BUT THEN THERE ARE OTHER ENTRANCES THAT ALLOW THOSE PROGRAMS TO WORK AROUND THE SCHOOL HOURS WITHOUT ALLOWING TOO MUCH ACCESS TO ALSO USE THE A â€" LINE INVOLVED IN THE RIGHT.

IN MANY WAYS THINGS CAN ACCESS COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND THE BUILDING.

SO HAVING ACCESS TO THEM AFTER HOURS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING FOR ASSEMBLIES, FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE BUILDING AS WE KNOW, THIS IS NOT ONLY A SCHOOL IS A MAJOR COMMUNITY ASSET.

TO THE RIGHT YOU WILL SEE THERE ARE SPACES IN THE COMMUNITIES AND YOU SEE THERE ARE THINGS AROUND THOSE COMMUNITIES.

BUT WITHIN THE GROUP TEACHER COLLABORATIVE SPACE CLASSROOM SPACES, EC THE SCIENCES IN THE CTE PROGRAM THEY ARE STARTING TO ORGANIZE AROUND THE CLUSTERS OF DISCIPLINARY COMMUNITIES AND A WAY OF STATING CAMPUS DESIGNED FOR 1600 STUDENTS IN SCALING IT DOWN IN MANY WAYS TO CREATE A PLACE IN AN ARCHITECTURE THAT FOSTERS STRONG RELATIONSHIPS THROUGHOUT SURE BUT THEN BASED LEARNING ACTIVE EXPERIENTIAL OPPORTUNITY IN THE ENVIRONMENT WE ARE HOPING TO ACHIEVE AS WELL.

SO YOU SEE ON THE RIGHT THERE ARE THREE CONCEPTS WE ARE EXPLORING AND THEY HAVE A NICKNAME SO THERE'S THE HAM FOR HIS HAND SHAPED FACING TO THE RIGHT THE CRESCENT SHAPE FOR THE BAND AND THE LOWER PORTION OF THE BUILDING IN THE PANEL FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.

IF WE GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, WE WILL DIG INTO ONE OF THOSE COMMUNITIES.

THIS IS DRILLING DOWN INTO ONE OF THOSE COMMUNITIES.

THIS BECOMES A DYNAMIC AND STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT HERE.

IT IS COMPRISED THEN TO THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT YOU SEE CLASSROOM CLUSTERS WITH ALL

[00:40:05]

OF THESE NEIGHBORHOODS WITH THE INTENTION THAT ARE BUILT IN NEIGHBORHOODS.

SO WITHIN THOSE CLUSTERS YOU SEE TEACHER WORKROOMS LEARNING SPACE SO THAT'S IN THE FORMAL SORT OF (INDISCERNIBLE) SMALLER INSTRUCTIONAL SPACES AS WELL.

IN THE CENTER, THE HEART OF THIS DIAGRAM IS THIS (INDISCERNIBLE) AND THIS IS AN IDEA WE WILL TAKE THE DINING SPACES THAT WOULD BE CONSOLIDATED AND INSTEAD WE WILL BREAK IT UP INTO FOUR DIFFERENT AREAS THAT ARE DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING WHERE WE HAVE MAY BE MORE COLLEGIAL ATMOSPHERE THAT'S CREATED FOR THE DINING EXPERIENCE BUT EVEN MORE INTERESTINGLY, WE HAVE ORGANIZED SCIENCE AROUND THAT SPACE AS YOU CAN SEE WHAT IS NOT BEING USED AS A DINING SPACE FOR ONE BLOCK COLLECTING ALL THE OTHER BLOCKS DURING THE DAY SORT OF STEM (INDISCERNIBLE) TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPACE AND ACTIVITIES CAN SPILL OUT OF THE LABS INTO THAT SPACE AND ALL SORTS OF EXCITING ACTIVITIES DOING THE PROGRAMMING SPACE.

THE ROLLOUTS AND ALL OF THE EXCITING THINGS YOU CAN IMAGINE JUST SORT OF BURSTING FROM THE SCENES.

THIS IS A AN INITIAL DIAGRAM OF WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE.

SO WHAT YOU SEE IS THAT DINING SPACE THAT REALLY BECOMES THAT EXTENDED LEARNING SPACE AND THEN SURROUNDED BY LABS AND STUDIOS AND VACANCY THIS SPILLING OUT FOR PROJECT-BASED LEARNING SO THE FAR RIGHT THERE'S AN ART STUDIO IN THE CENTER OF THE SCIENCE LAB ON THE LOWER LEFT THERE IS A CTE FABRICATION SPACE SO TRYING TO FIND THE SYNERGY BETWEEN THESE PROGRAMS BUT THEN GIVE PLENTIFUL SPACE FOR ALL OF THE EXCITEMENT AND ACTIVITY IN THE OTHER SMALLER SPACES ARE TEACHER COLLABORATIVE SPACES AND ADMINISTRATION SPACES WITH COUNSELORS SO ENGAGING STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE MOST ACTIVE.

AND THE SPACE PROJECTIONS THAT WE HAVE WITH THE BUILDING, AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN WORKING VERY ACTIVELY IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SETTINGS, FOCUS GROUPS.

OTHER SMALL GROUP SESSIONS WITH DOCTOR JACOBS.

CTE STAFF LIKE KIMBERLY WILSON, GREG WRIGHT, JEN BOUCHEE, JOHN HAMMOND TO REALLY TRY TO IMAGINE A FLEXIBLE AND REALLY INAPPROPRIATE AND FLEXIBLE CTE ENVIRONMENT WOULD BE WITHIN THE FACILITY HERE AS WELL.

SO THE TABLE JUST GIVES YOU SORT OF A TABULAR VERSION AND THE GRAPHIC VERSION IS EXACTLY THE SAME INFORMATION JUST IN A GRAPHICAL FORMAT BUT YOU CAN SEE LARGE FLEXIBLE LABS HERE THAT ARE COMPLEMENTED BY STORAGE SPACE, BUT THEN YOU ALSO SEE IDEAS OF TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF CTE ORIENTED CLASSROOMS. ONE THAT MIRRORS THE TYPICAL CLASSROOM, WHICH WE ARE THINKING OF A PROJECT-BASED CLASSROOM IN GENERAL FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE BUILDING BUT THESE WOULD BE SPECIFIC FOR THIS PROGRAM.

AND THEN ANOTHER THAT WE ARE CALLING THE DIGITAL DESIGN STUDIO SHOULD AND WHILE THEY ARE SEPARATE RIGHT NOW, SO I WILL SHOW YOU IN A MOMENT, IN MANY WAYS A LOT OF THE EXCITEMENT COMES WHEN YOU START TO PUT THE PARTS TOGETHER AND MAKE THE LARGER ASSEMBLIES IN THE SYNERGIES.

BUT ALSO THERE IS THAT COMPONENT HERE FOR THE HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM HERE OFF TO THE RIGHT HERE AS WELL.

SO LARGE SORT OF STUDIO LABS THAT ARE WORKING WITH DOCTOR JACOBS AND OTHERS TO REALLY DEFINE HOW WE CAN CREATE NEW AND EXCITING SPACES HERE WHETHER STUDENTS TO EMBRACE AS WELL.

NOW, IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT WE ARE THINKING STEMM ACROSS ALL OF THE NETWORKS AND PARTICULARLY AT KING STREET AND MINNIE HOWARD AS WELL, SO THERE'S COMPLEMENTARY RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENTS ACROSS THE ENTIRETY OF THE NETWORK AS WE THINK ABOUT, ONLY THESE TWO CAMPUSES BUT FUTURE EXPANSION AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS ESTABLISHED AS WELL.

SO JUST TO REFLECT UPON THAT, YOU KNOW, AS I TALK ABOUT THE MINNIE HOWARD

[00:45:08]

SITE, WE ARE ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT THE CONDUCT OF HIGH SCHOOL NETWORK AND HAVING COMPLEMENTARY RESOURCES AND ENSURING THAT THIS VISION OF EQUITABLE ACCESS IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYBODY ACROSS THE KING STREET CARE BUSINESS ACROSS 23 AND ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE OTHER SATELLITE AND OTHER CAMPUSES AS WELL.

SO ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT THE LARGER RELATIONSHIPS.

BUT THEN ON THE RIGHT, YOU SEE AS WE START TO THINK ABOUT MINNIE HOWARD, YOU WILL SEE IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF THAT, REALLY, IT'S AN INTERESTING SITE AND YOU MIGHT PERCEIVE IT AS FLAT BUT IS ACTUALLY A SERIES OF PLATEAUS.

IN THAT TOPOGRAPHY ACTUALLY GIVES US A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES, I THINK, THAT IS EXCITING FOR CTE TO SPILL OUT OF THE BUILDING AT MULTIPLE LEVELS AND OTHER PROGRAMS AS WELL.

>> SO AGAIN, OUR THREE CONCEPTS THAT WE ARE WORKING THROUGH, THEY ARE ALL STILL VERY MUCH IN THE PROCESS AS WE SPEAK.

THE FIRST ONE IS THE HAND CONCEPT, SO WE'RE CALLING IT FINGERS, BUT A COUPLE OF FINGERS COMING TOGETHER AND THEY KIND OF LOOK LIKE A HAND.

IT'S A STRETCH BUT YOU SEE THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE DIAGRAM WHERE IT SAYS CLASSROOMS. THESE ARE THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS I WAS TALKING ABOUT.

SO THOSE TWO WINGS PROJECTING OFF TO THE RIGHT ARE CLASSROOMS, TEACHER COLLABORATIVE SPACES, AND THEY ARE PLUGGING INTO A CENTER OF THE BUILDING THAT HAS CTE SPACES, THE SCIENCES, THE ARTS, THE CREATIVE COMMONS, CREATING THIS DYNAMIC AND EXCITING SORT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT REALLY WILL ESTABLISH THE HEART OF THE BUILDING IN MANY WAYS BECOME THE FIRST IMPRESSION TO THIS ENVIRONMENT.

BUT ALSO, AGAIN, THINKING ABOUT COMMUNITY ACCESS.

SO THE ARROWS ARE SHOWING ENTRANCES ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE BUILDING.

THOSE TWO ARE ACTUALLY FOUR-PART BECAUSE OF THE TOPOGRAPHY SO WE CAN ALSO THINK ABOUT PROGRAMS SPILLING OUT OF THE BUILDING IN ADDITION TO THE ARRIVAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL SORTS OF PROJECTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LANDSCAPE SURROUNDING THE BUILDING IN ADDITION TO RESOURCES INSIDE.

YOU SEE PARKING OFF TO THE RIGHT ON THE SIDE AND WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE THAT CONVENIENT AND THE ARRIVAL APPROPRIATE FOR CALLERS ONTO THE SITE BUT ALSO WITH THE SEPARATE BUS ACCESS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CAMPUS AS WELL.

SO KEEPING BUSES AND CARS SEPARATE AND MAKING FOR A SAFER ARRIVAL ON CAMPUS BUT THEN ALSO YOU SEE LOTS OF OUTDOOR SPACE OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING THE FORMAL ONES OF THE ATHLETIC FIELDS, TENNIS, BASKETBALL BUT THEN YOU CAN IMAGINE AS WE CONTINUE TO DIG IN BUT A LOT OF THESE OTHER GREEN SPACES CAN BECOME AN OUTDOOR LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR US AS WELL.

THIS IS JUST A QUICK STUDY OF HOW THE BUILDING MIGHT APPEAR FROM A BIRDS EYE VIEW.

IT'S A FOUR-STORY BUILDING RIGHT NOW AND AS YOU CAN SEE EACH OF THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS STACKING UP IN EACH OF THOSE LIENS AND THE CENTERPIECE CONTAINING A LOT OF THE RESOURCES WE JUST TALKED ABOUT FOR PROJECT-BASED LEARNING COMPLEMENTS AND THEN THE GYM FACING THE FIELDS APPROPRIATELY AND THE SECTION DOWN BELOW YOU CAN SEE THE TOPOGRAPHY IS VERY DRAMATIC ACROSS THE SITES AS WELL.

THE BUILDING IS TRYING TO BE RESPECTFUL IN CONTEXT AND SOME OF THE HOUSING THAT'S ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING AS WELL.

SO MAKING SURE WE ARE GOOD NEIGHBORS IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT.

NEXT.

THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE FLOOR PLANS LOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW.

AND IN THE LIGHT BLUES, YOU SEE THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS WITH TEACHER COLLABORATION SORT OF AT THE HEART OF THEM CLASSROOMS ORBITING AROUND EXTENDED LEARNING SPACES THESE INFORMAL SPACES IN THE CENTER SO WE ARE IMAGINING EVERY SQUARE FOOT OF THE BUILDING BECOMES DYNAMIC INSIDE THE LEARNING SPACE.

[00:50:07]

ON THIS LEVEL, YOU SEE THAT WE HAVE GOT THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL IN MANY WAYS IN THE CENTERPIECE OF THE BUILDING WHAT WE CALL THE CREATIVE COMMONS THE DISTRIBUTIVE DINING IDEA DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THAT ARE WHAT WE ARE CALLING A CTE SUITE WHICH IS COMPRISED OF TWO LABS TOO LARGE AND FLEXIBLE LABS WHICH HAVE -- SHARE ACT CLASSROOM IN THE MIDDLE.

DIFFERENT SETTINGS FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF ACTIVITIES WITHIN THIS LARGER IDEA OF A SWEET BUT THAT WHOLE SUITE CAN SPILL OUT INTO THE CREATIVE COMMONS, CREATING A SORT OF EXCITING AND EXPANSIVE SPACE WITHIN THE VERY CENTER OF THE BUILDING, THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL IN COLLABORATION WITH ART AND SCIENCE THAT ARE COLLABORATED HERE AS WELL.

EACH PLAN DOES VARIATIONS ON THIS THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IN A MOMENT.

THIS IS STARTING TO ILLUSTRATE THOSE BACKGROUNDS THAT I SHARED WITH YOU EARLIER.

>> THIS IS THE SECOND SCHEME CALLED THE CRESCENT FOR SORT OF THE BEND IN THE BUILDING

[00:59:54]

OF THE LOWER PART OF THE SELL SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

[01:03:26]

AND IN MANY WAYS STARTING HERE YOU SEE THE PARKING IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION HERE BECAUSE THE SATURATION OF THIS BUILDING IS A BIT BIGGER IN FOOTPRINT SO IT CONSTRAINS THE PARKING ON THE EAST SIDE WE ARE WORKING TO PULL IT BACK SO MAYBE WE CAN MOVE THE PARKING OFF TO THE EAST AS WELL.

WERE GRACIOUS ACCESS TO THE OUTDOOR SPACE.

THE INTENT IS TO SEPARATE CARS AND BUSES AS WE ARRIVE YOU WILL SEE AN ADJUSTMENT OF SCHOOL EXPANSION TO THE RIGHT WHILE WE ARE STARTING WITH OPENING EXPECTATION OF SERVING 1600 STUDENTS ON THIS CAMPUS, WE UNDERSTAND ENROLLMENT GROWTH IS LIKELY IN THE FUTURE SO ALLOWING FOR THE BUILDING TO GROW INCREMENTALLY OVER TIME AS WELL.

YOU SEE NEIGHBORHOODS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING IN OUR CLASSROOMS, IT SAYS, AND THEN ALSO, THERE'S SORT OF ANOTHER BLOCK UP TO THE TOP AND THESE ARE CLASSROOMS, TEACHER COLLABORATIVE SPACE IN THE HEART OF THE BUILDING SORT OF WHERE THE ARROW AND THE COURTYARD IS IS A CREATIVE COMMONS SQUARE, YOU KNOW, ALL OF THE SCIENCE AND CTE ALL STARTS TO COME TOGETHER AND CONNECT THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS AND BUILD THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL.

GYMS AND POOLS AS COMMUNITY ACCESS FACING THE FIELDS AND ALSO ALLOWING THAT SPACE TO OPERATE AROUND WEEKEND HOURS FOR 1/2 FOR SCHOOL INDEPENDENTLY IS ALSO PART OF OUR AMBITION.

IN THIS PARTICULAR PLAN, THE LIBRARY YOU CAN SORT OF PRY A PLACE OFF TO THE RIGHT HERE AS WELL CONNECTING THOSE TWO NEIGHBORHOODS.

>> JUST ANOTHER IDEA OF WHAT THE BUILDING MIGHT LOOK LIKE.

ON THE WEST SIDE, BECAUSE OF THE TOPOGRAPHY IT WILL LOOK LIKE A THREE-STORY BUILDING ON THE SIDE THAT'S FACING US IT WILL LOOK LIKE A FOUR-STORY BUILDING.

NESTLING INTO THAT LANDSCAPER BEING PERSPECTIVE OF THE NEIGHBORS BUT ALSO MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE GETTING GREAT DAYLIGHT INTO ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONAL SPACES AND AS WE KNOW AND HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE OUTCOME AND IS A GOAL FOR EACH OF THESE PLANS WE ARE STILL TRYING TO CREATE THESE COURTYARDS, CREATE THE VIEWS OF THE DAYLIGHT THROUGHOUT EVERY ASPECT OF THE BUILDING WHEN POSSIBLE.

NEXT?

>> THE THIRD SCHEME IS CALLED THE PINWHEEL AND AGAIN, THE PARTS ARE THE SAME.

YOU SEE THE TWO PLOTS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE GYM/POOL STACKED HERE AND THEN THE PEACE BETWEEN THE TWO CLASSROOM NEIGHBORHOODS BECOMES THE CREATIVE COMMONS CREATING THIS DYNAMIC EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVE LEARNING PART OF THE BUILDING.

ALSO THE LIBRARY WILL BE RIGHT WHERE THE CURSOR WAS FACING SOUTH AND IN THIS INSTANCE GIVING -- ENHANCING THE CIVIC PRESENCE OF THE BUILDING.

SOME SIMILAR STRATEGIES ON THE SITE, THIS IS AN OPTION THAT THEY TRANSPORTATION FOLKS LIKE PARTICULARLY HAVING THIS BUS DROP WERE.VERY CONVENIENT TO THE WEST AND AUTOMOTIVE CAR DROP OFF TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE

[01:05:02]

BUILDING AND THE PLAY AREAS AND OTHER THINGS ARE QUITE SIMILAR BETWEEN.

BUT THIS ONE IS A FIVE-STORY ITERATION AS YOU WILL SEE IN A SECOND IF WE CLICK ON THE NEXT SLIDE I THINK YOU'LL SEE THAT.

IT'S ONE OF THE MORE COMPACT FOOTPRINTS, SO IT OPENS UP FOR AN OPEN SPACE BY CREATING THAT FULL FLOOR THAT YOU SEE IN THE FOREGROUND FROM ONE OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS HERE.

AND SO AGAIN, THIS IS AN ILLUSTRATION OF WHAT THE BUILDING MIGHT LOOK LIKE.

IT'S AN EXPLORATION OF ITS MASS ON THE SITE.

AGAIN ON THE FAR SIDE.

NICK WILL APPEAR SMALLER TOWARDS THE FIELDS BECAUSE OF THE ELEVATION CHANGE CLIMBING TOWARDS THE FIELDS AS WELL.

AND WE DID DO A QUICK COMPARISON INTERNALLY, JUST TO SEE HOW THE PRINCIPLES OR DESIGN PATTERNS WERE ARTICULATED BETTER GOALS FOR THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT TO THE CONVERSATION OF THE (INDISCERNIBLE) THE CTE'S FACULTY AND OTHER FACULTY AND LEADERSHIP WITHIN THE SCHOOLS, EVERYTHING FROM CREATING A HEART OF THE SCHOOL TO ADJACENCIES AND INTEGRATING THE ARTS, CTE PROGRAMMING AND DISTRIBUTED SCIENCE, DISTRIBUTED DINING AND A LOT OF THINGS WE TALK ABOUT TO THE DIAGRAM AND

[New Business (Part 2 of 2)]

EXPLORING HOW EACH OF THOSE OPTIONS IS CURRENTLY IN THIS ITERATION SATISFYING THOSE GOALS ARE DOING RELATIVELY WELL WHAT YOU SEE ON THE BOTTOM IS OTHER CRITERIA PARKING EXPANSION POSSIBILITIES MAY BE BECOMING A DIFFERENTIATOR TO THIS IS THE IMPOSING PERHAPS A FEW MORE CONSTRAINTS ON PARKING IN EXPANSION AND OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE OF THAT LARGER FOOTPRINT AS IT WERE.

AND THIS IS JUST A SUMMARY THERE AND WHAT WE ARE GOING TO ASK, ACTUALLY -- I KNOW OCONTU THIS QUICKLY BUT I'M TRYING TO GET EVERYBODY OUTSIDE ON A BEAUTIFUL AFTERNOON, IS TO JUST -- I THINK WE WILL POST A QUICK POLL YOU CAN TAKE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JUST SCROLL THROUGH THIS AND YOU CAN CLICK ON THE RESPONSE TO EACH OF THESE QUESTIONS SO THE FIRST QUESTION IS WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE MASSING OF EACH OF THESE OPTIONS.

THAT'S SORT OF THE HEIGHTENED BULK OF THE BUILDINGS RELATIVE TO ITS CONTEXT AND INSIGHT.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BEST FOR AN OPEN SPACE ON CAMPUS AND THE WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BEST FOR PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR ACCESS.

THESE ARE THE SAME QUESTIONS WE'VE ASKED THE COMMUNITY SO WE ARE EXPLORING FURTHER INPUT IN DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINTS ON SOME OF THESE DIFFERENT TOPICS FOR EACH OPTION.

WE WILL GIVE YOU A MOMENT TO DO THAT AND THEN WE CAN SHARE BACK SOME OF THE FEEDBACK.

OKAY.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE PINWHEEL ON THE FIRST TWO QUESTIONS -- SO 50 PERCENT ACROSS-THE-BOARD ON PINWHEEL AND AN INTERESTING BREAKOUT.

AND THIS ONE IS 50 PERCENT.

INTERESTING.

AND SO PEDESTRIAN ACCESS.

OKAY.

SO PINWHEEL IN THE FIRST TO AND THEN A TIE FOR PEDESTRIAN ACCESS.

THAT'S INTERESTING.

WELL, THANK YOU FOR THE FEEDBACK.

WITH THAT, I THINK I WILL TURN IT OVER TO (NAME? ) TO JUST SHARE A FEW MORE SLIDES AS TO WHAT THE STATUS OF OUR WORK IS AND HOW WE ARE PROGRESSING.

>> THANK YOU.

WE HAD TO SWITCH PLACES TODAY.

SO SORRY ABOUT THAT.

SO IT WILL BE MADE.

JUST TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TIMELINE.

SO SEAN PRESENTED TO YOU THE CONCEPTS THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING AT.

WE WILL HAVE REVISED CONCEPTS AND WILL ULTIMATELY BE MAKING A RECOMMENDATION TO THE SCHOOL BOARD ON ONE OF THEM SO YOUR FEEDBACK TODAY IS HELPFUL.

WE JUST HAVE THIS TIME I PUT TOGETHER SO WE CAN SHOW YOU -- AND I THINK THE TITLE FELL OFF, BUT THE TOP IS REALLY THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING PIECE.

A LOT OF WHAT WE ARE DOING IS COINCIDING, AND WE ARE MAINTAINING STRONG COLLABORATION WITH THE ACADEMIC SIDE OF THE TEAM AND MAKING SURE WE ARE ON TRACK FOR THAT SEPTEMBER 2024 OPENING UNABLE GENTLEMAN SOME OF THE EXCITING STUFF THAT OUR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM WILL DO IN THE FUTURE.

AND THEN JUST ON OTHER ENGAGEMENT, WE HAVE A COMMUNITY MEETING THIS WEEK AT 6:00 ON THURSDAY.

IF YOU ARE ABLE TO JOIN, FEEL FREE TO.

WE ALSO HAVE OUR ADVISORY TEAM MEET AFTER THAT FROM 7:00 TO 8:00 AND YOU CAN WATCH THAT.

YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SUBMIT QUESTIONS AS YOU ARE IN THE COMMUNITY MEETING WEBINAR, BUT YOU CAN WATCH IT AT BOTH MEETINGS WILL BE RECORDED AND POSTED AS SOON AS THEY ARE CAPTIONED.

AND IN THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WILL BE THAT THURSDAY AFTER SPRING BREAK, AND THEN WE WILL STILL CONTINUE TO BE HAVING DIFFERENT TIMES OR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AS ALSO HAPPY TO GO BACK TO THIS GROUP AT ANY POINT DURING THE DESIGN AS WE GO THROUGH THE DESIGN OVER THE NEXT YEAR.

SO THERE IS THE LINK FOR THAT COMMUNITY MEETING AND IS ALSO ON THE WEBSITE AND

[Announcements by Members]

ALSO WENT OUT TWO WEEKS PRIOR, SO HOPEFULLY YOU ALL GOT THAT.

YOU CAN EMAIL US AT ANY TIME.

THAT EMAIL COMES TO MULTIPLE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM INCLUDING MYSELF AND OUR SENIOR CAPITAL PROGRAM MANAGER AND THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM.

KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH US ONLINE ON A WEBPAGE.

THAT IS IT FOR US.

DOCTOR JACOBS, I THINK WE ARE FOUR MINUTES OVER TIME.

BUT I'M HAPPY TO TURN IT BACK TO YOU AND IF THERE ARE TEMPORAL QUESTIONS WE ARE HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM TOO.

>> IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME NOW TO ASK THEM.

I WILL SAY THAT THE COMMUNITY ON MEETINGS ARE REALLY VERY INFORMATIVE, AND IF YOU DO HAVE A CHANCE TO ATTEND ONE OF THOSE, I REALLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO THAT.

TO STAY ABREAST OF WHAT IS GOING ON WITH CONSTRUCTION.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION.

>> I THINK ALAN HAS A QUESTION.

>> THANK YOU.

I PARTICIPATED IN THE OTHER MEETING AND I DO HAVE THIS WEEK'S MEETING ON MY CALENDAR.

THEY ARE INFORMATIVE.

I UNDERSTAND THE REASONING FOR NOT INCLUDING THE EXPANSION ALREADY, BUT TO ME, IT'S KIND OF PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER.

I KNOW WE HAVE THIS SITE, BUT WHY -- IS IT JUST PURE FINANCES THAT WE ARE NOT INCREASING THE SIZE OF THE SCHOOL FOOTPRINT NOW RATHER THAN WAITING SOME YEARS DOWN THE ROAD TO EXPAND? WHICH IS GOING TO BE MORE EXPENSIVE, AND IT'S GOING TO BE ANOTHER COMMUNITY PROCESS AND AM WONDERING WHY WE DON'T DO IT ALL NOW AND TAKE THE BITE.

>> THAT'S A GOOD POINT AND MY DOG IS EATING RIGHT NEXT TO ME, SO IF YOU HEAR SOMETHING CRAZY, IT'S MY DOG.

THANK YOU FOR THAT QUESTION.

WE HAVE RECEIVED THAT FEEDBACK IN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.

WHY WON'T YOU BUILD IT AS BIG AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN RIGHT NOW.

YOU KNOW, I THINK WE ARE AT -- IT IS FINANCIAL.

WE HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THE BUDGET AND WE HAVE BEEN TOLD PRETTY MUCH WE WON'T GET ANYMORE AND SO WHAT WE ARE PURSUING IS WHAT WE THINK WE NEED NOW AND IS ALSO WHAT WE CAN AFFORD.

I WOULD SAY SEPARATELY WE ARE AT KIND OF A POTENTIALLY AN INFLECTION POINT IN ENROLLMENT AND ALSO NEED TO CONSIDER KIND OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT ARE GOING IN AN EDUCATION, WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF VIRTUAL LEARNING.

IF WE DO HAVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH VIRGINIA TECH OR SOME OF THE OTHER -- OR AMAZON OR SOME OF THESE OTHER ENTITIES COMING IN, ARE WE RESTRICTING OURSELVES BY BUILDING THE BUILDING AS QUICK AS WE CAN AND THEN NOT NECESSARILY HAVING A PLACE THERE? AND THEN JUST IN PROMOTING THE CONNECTED HIGH SCHOOL NETWORK, I THINK IT WILL ALWAYS BE ON OUR MIND TO CONTINUE TO EXPLORE SOME DIFFERENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT MIGHT BE SOMEWHERE ELSE.

JUST RELATED TO ENROLLMENT, WE SAW A DECLINE THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF COVID AND THAT'S PRETTY STANDARD ACROSS-THE-BOARD AND I THINK WE WILL PROBABLY MORE THAN GETTING THEM BACK IN THE YEARS TO COME.

BUT THERE'S ALSO A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS GOING ON IN ALEXANDRIA CITY THAT COULD IMPACT OUR ENROLLMENT.

WE ARE PRETTY CONFIDENT WE WILL GET TO 5000 STUDENTS AND WHAT HAPPENS KIND OF AFTER THAT, WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR BUT CERTAINLY, IT'S SOMETHING WE ARE PLANNING FOR NOW IF WE NEED TO BUILD ON, WE CAN DO THAT IN THE FUTURE.

SO THAT'S KIND OF SOME OF THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND IT.

>> JUST ONE MORE THING.

I HAVE BEEN HERE LONG ENOUGH AND I'VE SEEN WHERE WE SOLD ALL SCHOOLS BECAUSE ENROLLMENT WENT DOWN AND ALL OF THIS OTHER STUFF, SO I'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS CYCLE.

BUT I ALSO SEE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TO CREATE THE EXPANSION WHERE WE CAN USE IT FOR OTHER COMMUNITY NEEDS UNTIL THE SCHOOL SYSTEM NEEDS THAT EXTRA SPACE.

SO TO ME, I SEE IT DUE DATE AGAIN, HAVING TO GO TO THE COMMUNITY CYCLE AGAIN AND MORE MONEY LATER ON WE ACTUALLY HAVE OTHER COMMUNITY NEEDS WE CAN

[01:10:02]

ADDRESS NOW AS A PLACEHOLDER UNTIL THE SCHOOL SYSTEM NEEDS THE EXPANSION, TO ME, IS A LOST OPPORTUNITY.

I UNDERSTAND THE BUDGET I'VE WORKED IN GOVERNMENT LONG ENOUGH.

I HATE TO PUSH IT DOWN THE ROAD, BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.

>> THANKS FOR THAT AND FEEL FREE TO EMAIL THOSE COMMENTS TO US BECAUSE THEY ARE HELPFUL FOR US TO COLLECT.

>> ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, ERICA AND SHAWN FOR THE INFORMATION.

>> THANKS FOR HAVING US.

>> AND, ALEX, I APOLOGIZE.

I REALIZE I SKIPPED OVER YOU TO GO OVER REGIONAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE.

WE ARE OVER A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, BUT AGAIN, I WANTED TO GO BACK TO YOU TO SEE IF YOU COULD GIVE US A QUICK UPDATE ON WHERE WE ARE AT.

>>ALEX COOLEY: I WANT TO MAKE SURE I AM RESPECTFUL OF EVERYONE PRESENT TIME.

THE ONLY REAL UPDATE I HAVE IS I AM LEAVING NOVA SO I WANTED TO PROVIDE YOU WITH CONTACT INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE YOU CAN REACH OUT TO GOING FORWARD.

FOR ANY SORT OF DATA.

I DON'T SEE A CHECKBOX BUT MELANIE STOVER.

UNLESS SURE IF ANY OF YOU HAVE CONNECTED WITH MELANIE.

SHE'S OUR DIRECTOR OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT, BUT SHE WILL BE THE POINT OF CONTACT FOR NOVA IF YOU NEED ANYTHING MOVING FORWARD.

QUICK DATA UPDATES.

THE MAIN THING IS YOU WILL SEE THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATES FOR FEBRUARY WERE JUST PUBLISHED YESTERDAY, AND THEY WENT UP SIGNIFICANTLY -- I'M SORRY -- THEY WERE FOR JANUARY BUT THEY WERE PUBLISHED YESTERDAY.

THEY WENT UP SIGNIFICANTLY FROM DECEMBER.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DID NOT GET WORSE.

THEY WENT BACK AND REVISED A LOT OF THE DATA SO THEY HAD UNDERESTIMATED THE RATE FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS.

THEY WENT BACK AND DID A REVISION.

YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THAT IN ALEXANDRIA AND OTHER PARTS OF THE REGION THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE LOOKS LIKE IT WENT UP A LOT AND IT DID NOT.

THEY WENT BACK TO REVISE THE NUMBERS.

WHEN YOU SEE THAT, THAT'S WHAT THAT IS.

CURRENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN ALEXANDRIA NOW I BELIEVE IS 5.7 PERCENT, WHICH IS ACTUALLY DOWN FROM WHAT WAS IN DECEMBER, SO THAT'S JUST MY QUICK UPDATE.

YOU MIGHT SEE SOME NUMBERS THAT LOOK REALLY HIGH, AND IT'S ONLY BECAUSE THEY WENT BACK AND SAID THEY MESSED UP THE FIRST TIME AND THEY REDID THEM.

>> OKAY.

ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU, ALEX.

OKAY.

SO THE LAST ITEM ON THE AGENDA ANNOUNCEMENT BY MEMBERS.

I WANT TO OPEN UP THE FLOOR TO EVERYONE.

ARE THERE ANY ANNOUNCEMENTS?

>> I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST MENTION THAT WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF RENAMING THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND THE NAME MUST BEEN RECOMMENDED TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IS ALEXANDRIA HIGH SCHOOL.

WE ARE GOING TO BE VOTING ON THAT ON APRIL 8 EXHIBITS A DAY WE WILL VOTE ON THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THE NEW BUILDING CHECK AND I THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION TO YOU THAT THE VIRGINIA TECH INNOVATION CAMPUS IS HAVING A COMMUNITY MEETING TONIGHT ABOUT THEIR BUILDING AS WELL, AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS I THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION THAT MYSELF, NELSON, AND ROLL THE PART OF A GROUP OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN ADVOCATING THAT VIRGINIA TECH ENSURE THAT THE CONTRACTOR ON THE PROJECT ENSURES THERE IS NOT WAGE THEFT, WHICH IS A BIG PROBLEM IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.

AND SO WHITE AND TURNER, IT WAS THE CONTRACTOR ON THAT, HAS COMMITTED TO ENGAGING IN SOME OF THOSE GOOD PRACTICES.

SO WE ARE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

>> GREAT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE UPDATE.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS?

>> I JUST WANTED TO MAKE ONE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT INDUSTRY ADVISORY BOARD.

WE HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE FROM MGM NATIONAL HARBOR CASINO AND HOTEL.

AND THEY HAVE PUT US IN TOUCH WITH ONE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY WHO IS GOING TO BE DOING A WEBINAR FOR JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND AS I EXPLAINED TO HER ABOUT THE IN THE COMMUNITY SHE SAID WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE PARENTS BE INVOLVED IN IT TOO BECAUSE THEY HAVE SIMILAR JOBS THAT ARE GOOD PAYING JOBS RIGHT OUT OF-THEY WILL TREAT STUDENTS AND ANYBODY WITH THE COMPANY FOR SIX MONTHS AND THEN GET TUITION PAID FOR AND THEY ARE BRINGING PEOPLE FROM LAS VEGAS TO ACTUALLY WORK AT NATIONAL HARD WORK BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIND ENOUGH PEOPLE.

JUST TO GIVE YOU A SALARY -- JUST BEING A HOUSEKEEPER FOR ONE OF THE HOTELS IS 22 BUCKS AN HOUR.

YOU HAVE TO BE 21 TO GO THROUGH THE DEALER TRAINING BUT THEY DO HAVE SECURITY, SO SOME CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS WHO MAY PARTICIPATE IN SECURITY FOR THE CASINO, SPECIAL EVENTS, THERE IS CATERING, HOSPITALITY, OUR CULINARY STUDENTS MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET A JOB OR TRAINING OUT OF THAT.

JOBS FOR VIRGINIA GRADUATES, A PROGRAM GRANT WE HAVE AT TC WILLIAMS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO PUT THE STUDENTS IN TOUCH WITH THIS GROUP.

SO THAT EVENT IS GOING TO HAPPEN SOMETIME IN APRIL.

WE'RE JUST NAILING DOWN THE DATE.

IT WILL BE DURING THE 11:00 TO NOON HOUR.

SO WHEN STUDENTS ARE THERE LUNCH, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WEBINAR WHICH WILL BE RECORDED AND THEN PLAYED BACK FOR PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY THAT NIGHT.

>> OKAY.

THANK YOU, DOCTOR JACOBS.

>> THIS IS RAUL.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT AS WELL.

NELSON AND I MET WITH THE ALEXANDRIA SEAPORT FOUNDATION ABOUT A WEEK AGO.

WE TALKED TO A GROUP OF STUDENTS ABOUT POSSIBLE CAREERS WITH THE BUILDING TRADES OR CARPENTERS UNION WE ANSWERED ANY QUESTIONS THAT THEY HAD PROCEDURES THAT THEY HAD TO GO THROUGH IN ORDER TO COME INTO THE PROGRAMS, AND WE ARE WORKING ON DOING IT THROUGH THE TRAINING CENTER FOR SOME OF THE STUDENTS.

AS MICHELLE MENTIONED, WHITE AND TURNER ADOPTED THE LABOR CENTERS FOR THE CAMPUS IN ALEXANDRIA AND I THINK THAT WILL INCREASE THE CHANCES FOR RESPONSIBLE CONTRACTORS TO GET THAT WORK AND CREATE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO COME INTO THE TRADES AND GET THE FREE TRAINING IN EITHER ELECTRICAL WORK OR CONTRACTING WORK OR WHATEVER ELSE THEY WANT TO DO.

ALONG THOSE LINES, AMAZON ADOPTED THE LABOR STANDARDS AS WELL AND WE ARE GETTING SOME OF THE WORK AS WELL.

SO THAT'S GOING TO CREATE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO MAY BE WILLING TO COME INTO OUR PROGRAM, SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH EVERYONE IN THIS GOAL AND FIND WAYS FOR GETTING THE STUDENTS IN A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN THAT.

THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU RAUL.

ANY OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS?

>> ALL RIGHT.

I WOULD LIKE TO MOTION TO ADJOURN THE MEETING.

>> SO MOVED.

>> ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.
