SO NOW WE -- THE ONLY THING THAT WE HAVE NEXT IS I BELIEVE THE
[21. Report from Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr.]
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT BEFORE WE GO INTO OUR WORK SESSION.I WANTED TO TAKE THIS TIME TO REPORT ABOUT THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL BECAUSE WE JUST COMPLETED DAY THREE WHICH I CANNOT BELIEVE OF OUR VIRTUAL PLUS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND I JUST HAVE TO FIRST START OFF BY THANKING ALL OF OUR STAFF FOR MAKING IT POSSIBLE THIS WEEK.
A HUGE SHOUTOUT TO OUR TECHNOLOGY TEAM BECAUSE THAT REALLY IS OUR LIFE LINE TO DO ANYTHING IN ACPS DURING THIS VIRTUAL PLUS WORLD AND DR. HOOVER AND THE I.T.
TEAM HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TONE SURE OUR STABILITYS HAVE THE APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY DEVICES AND ACCESS AND THE ZOOMS AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING IN REGARDS TO CANVAS AND I MEAN WE HAVE OVER 5,000 TECHNOLOGY DEVICES OVER THE PAST WEEK PROVIDED TO OUR STUDENTS AND THAT IS FROM OUR I.T.
WE ARE WORKING WITH FAMILIES WHO ARE UNABLE TO GET OUR PRINCIPALS, TALK ABOUT HEROS WORKING ON THE FRONT LINE, I MEAN, PEOPLE SOMETIMES DON'T REALIZE ALL OF THE WORK PRINCIPALS HAVE TO DO TO MAKE THINGS LIKE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL,
[00:05:19]
LIKE THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL HAPPEN SMOOTHLY, EFFICIENTLY, AND EFFECTIVELY.THERE'S A LOT OF PLANNING THAT COMES INTO THAT AND BEING IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND STILL BEING ABLE TO DO THAT IN SOME CASES FROM YOUR LIVING ROOM OR YOUR FAMILY ROOM OR SOMETIMES THE OFFICE -- SO THAT THEY CA OPERATE EFFECTIVELY AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR SENIOR LEADERS AND COORDINATORS AND DIRECTORS AND OFFICE STAFF UNDERSTAND THEIR HARD WORK IS APPRECIATED AS WELL.
SO I JUST HIGHLIGHTED SOME FOLKS BUT ANYBODY ELSE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE.
THIS WEEK I'VE HEARD A LOT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK WITH OUR VIRTUAL PLUS.
ITCHES EXCITED TO HEAR COMMENDATIONS FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
WE ALSO HAVE CONCERNS THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO WORK THROUGH.
WE DON'T HAVE A PLAYBOOK IN HOW ALL OF THIS WORKS, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THIS IS NEW FOR EVERYBODY SO WHAT I'M TALKING TO MY SUPERINTENDENT COLLEAGUES, LIKE, HOW WAS YOUR DAY, EVERYBODY IS KIND OF LEARNING AS WE GO ALONG WITH THIS TOGETHER BUT ONE THING WE KNOW THAT WE'RE GOING TO JUST HAVE TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT AND ANALYZE MORE SPECIFICALLY IS REALLY OUR YOUNGER LEVELS, OUR YOUNGER STUDENTS, STUDENTS IN PRE-K THROUGH SECOND GRADE AND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE IN REGARDS TO THEIR DAY AND WE ARE ESTABLISHING -- WE MET WITH OUR PRINCIPALS TODAY AT OUR WEEKLY MEETING TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE ESTABLISH AN ADVISORY TEAM AND THIS IS A TEAM OF TEACHERS FROM ALL OF THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AT ALL DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS WHO WILL BE WORKING TOGETHER TO REALLY TALK THROUGH SOME OF THE OBSTACLES THAT WE HAVE WITH THE VIRTUAL PLUS THAT WERE JUST UNFORESEEN.
WE HAVE TO GO INTO IMPLEMENTATION TO DETERMINE WHAT WORKS AND DOESN'T WORK AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE TWEAKED BUT HAVING THAT DISCUSSION WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY RIGHT THERE IN THE MOMENT WITH OUR STUDENTS IS GOING TO BE EXTREMELY BENEFICIAL FOR US.
WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO UTILIZE OUR MONDAYS FORTUNATELY BECAUSE MONDAYS ARE ALREADY SCHEDULED FOR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND STAFF MEETINGS AND TEAM MEETINGS AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE SO WE HAVE THE ACTUA TIME TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS WEEKLY.
WE NOW ARE JUST WORKING THROUGH WHAT THAT STRUCTURE LOOKS LIKE.
WE'RE GOING TO SEND MORE INFORMATION OUT TO THE BOARD AS WELL AS TO OUR SCHOOLS JUST AROUND HOW WE MONITOR OUR PROGRESS AND MAKE REFINEMENTS AND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.
WE HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL AND IT'S SOMETHING I SHARED WITH OUR PRINCIPALS TODAY, WE HAVE TO BINNED MOOFL.
WE HAVE TO BE MINDFUL THE MOMENT WE HEAR SOMETHING WE TRY TO CHANGE IT INSTANTLY BECAUSE WE'LL BE SHIFTING AND CHANGING EVERY TWO OR THREE DAYS SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO HAVE A SYSTEM IN PLACE ON HOW WE MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS SO THAT WE'RE NOT IMPULSIVELY JUST HAPPEN HAZARDLY MAKING DECISIONS QUICKLY WITHOUT A PLAN FOR IT ALL TO WORK EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY.
SO WE'RE GOING TO BE WORKING THROUGH THAT VERY QUICKLY SO IT'S NOT -- YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT WEEKS FOR THAT.
WE'LL HAVE MORE INFORMATION EARLY NEXT WEEK TO SHARE OUT WITH OUR COMMUNITY.
ANOTHER THING THAT I WANTED TO JUST MENTION IN REGARDS TO THE OPENING OF SCHOOLS.
NEXT WEEK WE'RE HAVING DISCUSSIONS OR WE'RE GOING TO HAVE OFFERING SOME OF THE CHILD CARE OPTIONS THAT WE SHARED WITH THE BOARD A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.
THE GOAL IS TO BEGIN THOSE ON MONDAY.
AND WE DO HAVE A PROCESS THAT WE HAVE LOOKED AT APPLICATIONS, CONTACTED FAMILIES WHO WERE ELIGIBLE FOR THESE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND WE ARE SEEING THAT THERE IS A NEED OUT THERE THAT PEOPLE ARE WANTING TO HAVE THESE CHILD CARE OPTIONS AND FORTUNATELY WITH OUR VIRTUAL PLUS PARTNERS, MANY OF THEM
[00:10:02]
ALREADY HAVE WE'RE GOING TO BE YOU EVERING SOME FREE SLOTS BUT MANY OF THEM ALREADY HAVE SLIDING SCALE OPTIONS AS WELL.THAT THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO HAVE THESE SLIDING SCALE FEES FOR OUR FAMILIES AND THAT'S REGARDLESS IF YOU'RE AT A TITLE ONE SCHOOL OR NOT.
WE'RE OFFERING AS AN ACPS KIND OF LIKE FREE OPTION IS FOR THE TITLE I SCHOOLS, THERE ARE SOME VERY STRICT REQUIREMENTS THAT WHERE WITH THAT BECAUSE WE'RE UTILIZING FEDERAL DOLLARS TO HELP US TO AFFORD SOME OF THESE CHILD CARE OPTIONS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT OR LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT FOR OUR STUDENTS.
BUT WE ARE MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT THE NEED THAT PARENTS ARE SHARING WITH US AND THAT WE'RE COLLABORATING WITH ALL OF OUR VIRTUAL PLUS PARTNERS TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AND REFINEMENTS, YOU KNOW, ALONG THE WAY.
AND I THINK THAT WE HAVE TO ACCEPT -- THIS IS A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW FOR I KNOW FOR ME I KNOW FOR OUR TEAM AS WELL IS THAT WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY ALL AT ONCE AND THAT'S HARD TO SAY THAT IN A SCHOOL DIVISION BUT IT IS A REALITY.
ESPECIALLY WITH SO MANY CONSTRAINTS THAT WE HAVE FROM TECHNOLOGY TO SPACE TO STAFFING TO DOLLARS TO JUST BEING IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.
I MEAN, THESE ARE ALL CONSTRAINTS THAT JUST DOESN'T AFFORD US TO SAY WE'RE GOING TO SOLVE 100% OF OUR PROBLEMS. AND WE COULD NOT SOLVE 100% OF OUR PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC SO IT'S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT TO TRY TO RESOLVE 100% OF OUR PROBLEMS NOW.
WE'RE HAVING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION AS WELL.
THESE ARE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND HAVING JUST OUR CONVERSATIONS TO TRY TO FINALIZE OUR PLANNING IN REGARDS TO THAT BECAUSE WE DO WANT TO BE ABLE TO OFFER SOME OPTIONS FOR OUR FAMILIES WHO HAVE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
THERE ARE A LOT OF PARAMETERS AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO PUT IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT THIS ALL WORKS APPROPRIATELY AND THAT WE CAN DELIVER ON WHAT WE'RE SHARING WITH OUR COMMUNITIES THIS IS WHY WE'RE TAKING A LITTLE TIME TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS DONE SO THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY DELIVER WHAT WE'RE SAYING AND THAT WE CAN MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES WHO WILL BE ABLE TO ENGAGE IN SOME OF THESE OFFERINGS.
YOU KNOW, RIGHT NOW, ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ARE VIRTUAL.
THAT RIGHT NOW IS OUR LEARNING APPROACH.
THAT WAS WHAT WE AGREED UPON AND WHAT WAS APPROVED BACK IN AUGUST FOR US TO START THE YEAR.
WE WERE GOING TO HAVE 100% VIRTUAL AND MEET NEEDS VIRTUALLY AND PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES VIRTUALLY.
IN ADDITION TO THAT WE'RE JUST LOOKING AT WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ALTERNATIVES AND POTENTIALLY IN PERSON OPTIONS THAT WE CAN OFFER SOME OF OUR STUDENTS AS WELL.
AND THEN WHERE TO DETERMINE, OKAY, WHICH STUDENTS ARE THEY BECAUSE WE CAN'T BRING BACK EVERYBODY SO THEN HOW DO WE SAY YES TO SOME, NO TO OTHERS.
SO THERE'S SO MANY FACTORS THAT COME ALONG WITH MAKING A DECISION LIKE THIS THAT IT'S NOT AS FAST AS EVERYBODY WOULD LIKE IT TO BE BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY COMPLICATIONS TO IT THAT ONCE YOU MAKE THAT DECISION, THERE ARE SOME IMPLICATIONS FOR ANOTHER GROUP WHEN THAT DECISION IS MADE AND THEN HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THAT.
SO WE'RE JUST WORKING THROUGH THOSE DYNAMICS AND IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS LATER I KNOW MS. WARNER, SHE IS ON THE ZOOM TODAY AND CAN ANSWER FURTHER QUESTIONS THAT WE HAVE.
BUT ALL IN ALL, I AM VERY, VERY PLEASED WITH THIS WEEK AND WHAT WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES THAT EVERYBODY IS EXPERIENCING ACROSS OUR NATION AND I JUST WANT TO COMMEND ALL OF OUR STAFF FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO.
ONE FINAL THING BEFORE I OPEN THE FLOOR FOR QUESTIONS IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS FROM BOARD MEMBERS IS OUR HELP LINE WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TOS HAVE FOR OUR FAMILIES AND MANY OF OUR FAMILIES TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THAT OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.
I SHARED SOME STATISTICS WITH YOU ALL IN MY UPDATE WITH YOU.
I'M GOING TO PROVIDE MORE FORMAL INFORMATION ONCE WE GET THROUGH OUR FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL BUT WE'VE BEEN PLEASED WITH THE AMOUNT OF ENGAGEMENT THAT FAMILIES WHO TYPICALLY HAVE NOT FELT LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN ENGAGED OR THAT THEY HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN THAT WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE MAKING OPPORTUNITIES ENGAGING OUR UNDERREPRESENTED FAMILIES.
THAT SAID I'LL CONCLUDE MY DAY THREE REPORT TO THE BOARD.
WE TRANSITION TOED THE QA DURING THE SUMMER WHEN WE WERE MEETING WEEKLY AND WE PUT ON THE AGENDA TODAY THAT THIS REPORT WHICH IS WHAT WE HAD BEEN DOING WHICH
[00:15:10]
DOESN'T USUALLY HAVE QUESTIONS BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST WEEK WE'LL HAVE TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL ABOUT THE WORDING WHETHER -- IF PEOPLE HAVE QUESTIONS RIGHT NOW ABOUT THE OPENING WEEK, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HANDS AND THEN WE'LL CALL ON YOU.I WAS JUST WONDERING HAVE WE HEARD ANY FEEDBACK -- I'VE SEEN A LOT OF FEEDBACK FROM THE FAMILY SIDE.
WAS THERE ANY FEEDBACK FROM JUST KEEP TEACHERS ON HOW THINGS ARE GOING FOR THEM SO FAR? MAYBE NOT BUT I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THERE WERE ANY.
>> I'VE BEEN RECEIVING SEVERAL EMAILS FROM OUR TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS HAVE ALSO WE TALKED ABOUT THAT DURING OUR PRINCIPAL UPDATE.
MANY OF OUR TEACHERS, THEY ARE UNBELIEVABLY HAPPY WITH THE TRANSITION AND THEY FELT THAT WE DID BECAUSE WE HAD OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TIME OVER THE PAST WEEK WE WERE ABLE TO PREPARE THE STAFF FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SOME THINGS OF COURSE YOU JUST DON'T KNOW UNTIL KIDS ARRIVE IN A VIRTUAL ARRIVE.
>> IT IS ALL CONSUMING THOUGH AT THIS TIME RAN INTO A TEACHER YESTERDAY AND SHE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT STARTING AND I SAW HER THINK ABOUT IT AND WHEN SHE REALIZED THAT SHE JUST STARTED TEACHING THE DAY BEFORE I COULD SEE, LIKE, IT HAD SEEMED LIKE A LONG TIME AND A SHORT TIME.
AND SO I FELT FOR HER BECAUSE I REALIZED IT'D SEEMED LIKE A LONG TIME SINCE TUESDAY MORNING STARTED AND I KNOW IT WAS ONLY WEDNESDAY EVENING.
NOT HAVING YOUR PLACE IT FORCES YOU TO NOW BE THAT EDUCATOR, THAT TEACHER, THAT ENDPAJER IN A VERY AWKWARD ENVIRONMENT LIKE SITTING AT A TABLE OR IN YOUR LIVING ROOM OR YOUR OWN PERSONAL OFFICE AT HOME SO THAT BRINGS CHALLENGES TOO AND I DON'T WANT TO UNDERESTIMATE THAT SO I'M GLAD YOU BROUGHT THAT UP, MADAME CHAIR, BECAUSE THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS CONSTANT WITH OUR STAFF THAT THEY'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT.
THEY'RE AT HOME AND ARE BEING PUSHED INTO DISCOMFORT BUT I DO KNOW THAT OUR STAFF WILL OVERCOME SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES AT THIS TIME AND WE'RE GOING TO KEEP SUPPORTING THEM AS MUCH AS WE CAN TO MAKE IT AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JUST SUCH A FANTASTIC RECAP OF THE OPENING.
I JUST FIRST OF I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR ALSO ACKNOWLEDGING WHAT SOME OF THE YOUNGER LEARNERS ARE GOING THROUGH IN YOUR OPENING REMARKS.
I KNOW MOST OF THE FEEDBACK WE HAVE HEARD ECHOS SOME CONCERNS WITH THE KINDERGARTEN AGE RANGE AND EXCITED TO HEAR THAT'S AN AREA OF FOCUS FOR YOU AS WELL AND WE LOOK FORWARD AS A BOARD TO HEARING YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THAT.
THE SECOND THING I WANTED TO SAY IS THANK YOU SO MUCH ALSO FOR SHARING JUST ACKNOWLEDGING THE HARD WORK OF THE STAFF.
I MEAN, I'VE HAD THE SINCERE PLEASURE OF GETTING TO WATCH TEACHERS ON ZOOMS, GRANTED I'M DOING MY OWN WORK BUT YOU CAN HEAR IN THE BACKGROUND AND THEY'RE
[00:21:54]
SO ENGAGED.-- ARE THE LINE WENT BACK EXCEPTIONALLY QUICK AND SMOOTHLY.
ALL THE QUESTIONS WERE ANSWERED AND THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEONE I WOULD DIAGNOSE MYSELF AZTEC NO LOGICALLY CHALLENGED SO FOR ME TO HAVE SUCH ACE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW HARD ACPS IS WORK SOING I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.
MY QUESTION THOUGH IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I'M GETTING FROM PARENTS EVEN THOUGH THINGS ARE GOING AS WELL AS THEY COULD IS JUST ACPS IS GOING TO HAVE AN ASSESSMENT TOOL ALONG THE WAY IN TERMS OF GATHERING FEEDBACK FROM FAMILIES AND STAFF THAT YOU JUST RECENTLY TALKED ABOUT FROM THE PRINCIPALS.
THERE'S GOING TO BE CHECK INS FORMALLY ON MONDAYS BUT COULD YOU SHARE ABOUT WHAT IS THAT ASSESSMENT GOING TO LOOK LIKE FROM YOUR TEAM AS A STAFF AND THE FAMILIES AND THEN HOW ARE YOU AS THE SUPERINTENDENT KIND OF ASSESSING WHERE -- WHAT CHECKPOINTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR HEAD AS TO LIKE WHAT DECISIONS ARE YOU MAKING IN TERMS OF ARE WE GOING TO REMAIN VIRTUAL? ARE WE GOING TO -- DO YOU HAVE A CHECKLIST? IT MIMICS THE AMOUNT OF KIDS WE CAN BRING TO SCHOOL AND WITHOUT -- THAT JUST BRINGS A WHOLE OTHER ALCOHOL TO US GETTING KIDS TO AND FROM SCHOOL SO THAT'S ANOTHER MAJOR CONSTRAINT SO THAT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT'S LIGHT BUT THOSE ARE THE TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT IN REGARDS TO CONSTRAINTS.
WE ALSO ARE JUST EVALUATING AND THESE ARE GOING TO COME THROUGH SURVEYS THAT WE DID OVER THE SUMMER WITH SURVEYING OUR FAMILIES TO SPECIFICALLY ASK ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE, YOU KNOW, HOW IS THE INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY HAPPENING.
THE BIGGEST FACTOR TOO IS ALSO GOING TO BE WHAT HAPPENS IN REGARDS TO OUR CITY WIDE DATA ANDING WHAT DOES THE COVID-19 CURVE LOOK REICH.
WHAT I'M HEARING RIGHT NOW IS THAT WE COULD POTENTIALLY SEE A SPIKE WHEN FLU SEASON COMES BACK, YOU NO EH, AND THAT'S TOWARDS THE END OF OUR FIRST QUARTER.
THESE ARE FACTORS THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO LOOK AT TO ASSESS WHETHER IT'S
[00:25:05]
THE RIGHT TIME FOR US TO TRANSITION TO THAT APPROACH.WE ALREADY DEVELOPED TO DO -- PIVOT INTO THE HYBRID.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF WHEN WE HIT THE GREEN LIGHT TO START THAT.
I JUST WANTED TO DITTO WHAT'S BEEN SAID AND KUDOS TO THE STAFF ABE TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HARD WORK.
REOPENING HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED IN GENERAL ALTHOUGH OBVIOUSLY THERE HAVE BEEN A COUPLE AREAS OF CHALLENGE WHICH HAVE MAINLY BEEN AS YOU ACKNOWLEDGED MY QUESTIONING PROBABLY WON'T BE TOO SURPRISING AND IT'S BASICALLY ABOUT I'M KIND OF CURIOUS WHERE WE ARE IN TERMS OF THE ATTENDANCE AND HOW THINGS ARE LOOKING VIS-A-VIS LAST YEAR AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE THAT OFF THE CUFF BUT I WOULD BE GREAT IF WE COULD GET A SENSE OF KIND OF HOW DID TH FIRST DAY COMPARE TO LAST YEAR IN TERMS OF PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO WERE IN SCHOOL.
HOW HAS THAT TRAJECTORY MAYBE LOOKED OVER THE FIRST THREE DAYS.
>> THANK YOU, MR. SUAREZ FOR THAT QUESTION.
IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE WORKING FOR.
WE DON'T HAVE THAT DATA FOR YOU TODAY BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE OUR -- WE'RE TRACKING OUR DATA BY WEEKS SO WEEK ONE WILL BE P GATHERING OUR DATA THROUGH ATTENDANCE SOFTWARE TO DETERMINE WHAT OUR ATTENDANCE RATE WAS FOR THE FIRST WEEK.
THEN WE'RE GOING TO START WITH COMPARISONS EACH WEEK TO DETERMINE IF WE'RE STAYING FLAT, SEEING AN INCREASE OR DECREASE AND THEN START TO DIG DEEPER TO DETERMINE WHY.
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED WE GOT DOWN TO A GOOD START.
GETTING THE DEVICES TO THE KIDS AND I JUST WANT TO REALLY THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THAT EFFORT AND ALSO I KNOW THE TEACHERS ARE REALLY PUTTING IN A LOT OF TIME ENANDER I DIDN'T.
I'M HEARING POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT THE EFFORTS THAT THEY'RE PUTTH FORGOT AND I WANTED TO KIND OF AGREE WITH WHAT I'M HEARING FROM SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH ACADA 2.
I THOUGHT I WOULD CHIME IN BECAUSE I HAVE AN EIGHTH GRADER, FOURTH GRADER AND SECOND GRADER AND WHAT I'VE FOUND IS WITH THE -- WITH EIGHTH GRADE, SECONDARY, I THINK THAT THIS MODEL SEEMS TO BE WORKING FOR THEM.
THEY'RE TOTALLY CAPABLE OF FUNCTIONING WITHIN THE DAY, THE FULL VIRTUAL DAY.
FOR FOURTH GRADE THE SPIRITUAL PLUS ADVISORY TEAM WITH TEACHERS FROM
[00:30:11]
EVERY SCHOOL LOOK TEA AT ADJUSTMENTS THAT MIGHT NEED TO BE MADE TO THE MODEL AND WE JUST TALKED AND THIS SURVEY BUT IT SOUNDSES LIKES THOSE THINGS SOUND LIKE IT WILL TAKE UNTIL MAYBE OCTOBER TO GET SOME OF THOSE CHANGES IN PLACE SO ONE OF THE WE TRY TO SOLVE THAT PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL WE HAVE HERE BUT SPEAKING FOR MYSELF, MY SECOND GRADER WENT FROM TWO 30 MINUTE ZOOM SESSIONS IN A WEEK TO BASICALLY FIVE HOURS ON ZOOM EVERY DAY OF SCHOOL SO FAR AND I KNOW WHEN YOU ALL WERE ROLLING OUT THE PLAN IT SOUNDED LIKE THERE WAS GOING TO BE KIND OF LIKE THE LARGE GROUP INSTRUCTION AND THEN BREAKING INTO THE SMALLER GROUPS, THE BREAKOUT ROOMS AND THAT PART I THINK HAS NOT BEEN HAPPENING.I THINK IT'S VERY CHALLENGING FOR TEACHERS ESPECIALLY WITH K TO 2 LIKE PUTTING THEM IN BREAKOUT ROOMS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE STAFFING TO GO INTO EACH BREAKOUT ROOM AND SUPPORT THAT AND SO AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR HE REALLY STARTS TO CHECK OUT.
AFTER LUNCH, HE'S ABLE TO COME BACK AND DO MORE AS WELL.
I THINKS SOMETHING LIKE AN HOUR IN THE MORNING AND AN HOUR IN THE AFTERNOON WOULD BE MORE MANAGEABLE.
I GUESS MY QUESTION IS, IS THERE A WAY TO PIVOT SOONER.
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS ABOUT NOT WANLTING TO JUMP IN AND MAKE A CHANGE AND THEN HAVING TO CHANGE AGAIN.
THE TEACHERS CAN REALLY READ A ROOM.
I THINK IT MUST BE REALLY HARD FOR TEACHERS OF K TO 2 WATCHING THE STUDENTS BECAUSE I'VE SEEN THE STUDENTS AND THEY LOOK VERY TIRED.
WHAT KIND OF AUTONOMY TO -- I'LL SEE YOU AT SOCIAL STUDIES IN LIKE AN HOUR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
IF YOU COULD JUST SKIP TO THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
>> SO THE GOAL IS NOT TO MAKE ANY CHANGES.
WE WANT TO AND WE DON'T PLAN TO MAKE CHANGES FORM EITHER.
WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS AND THAT IMPACTS FUNDING.
SO YOU ADOPT WANT TO LOSE DOLLARS.
WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE MONEY FROM THE STATE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE WE'VE ALREADY CUT OUR BUDGET.
WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HEAR FROM ALL OF OUR TEACHERS AND THE GOAL THAT PRINCIPLES ARE GOING BE MEETING WITH TEACHERS ON MONDAY TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT THEY SAW THROUGHOUT FIRST WEEK.
SO WEEK DETERMINE LIKE IS THIS A COMMON THEME OR IS THIS KIND OF LIKE JUST -- WE'RE MAKING A SOLID DECISION BASED ON DATA SO WE HOPE TO HAVE SOMETHING IN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO ABOUT HOW WE'RE GOING TO PIVOT AND MOVE FORWARD AND WHAT THAT WILL LOOK LIKE BUT WE HAVE TO DO CHECKS AND BALANCES.
WE NEED TO HEAR FROM ALL THE STAFF ON THIS ONE.
AND MY OTHER QUESTION WAS I THINK IT'S -- RIGHT NOW OUR MAJOR PUSH IS TO GET THE DEVICES.
GET OUR KIDS CONNECTED TO THEIR CLASSROOM AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO
[00:35:07]
DO SOME ADDITIONAL -- I THINK OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS MORE SUPPORT ON LEARNING THE TOOLS.WE HAVE -- WE'RE JUST STARTING TO PULL SOME DATA ABOUT HOW MANY FAMILIES HAVE THEIR POWER SCHOOL ACCOUNT.
I THINK THEY HAVE BUILT GREAT COURSES.
ZOOM LINKS NOT WORKING BUT THAT'S GOING TO BE WORKED OUT THROUGH THESE FIRST FEW DAYS.
WE'VE GOT OUR EYE ON IT LOOKING AT ANYTHING THAT EMERGES AND ALSO WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS JUST A SHOUTOUT TO MY STAFF IS AMAZING.
I WAS JUST WONDERING, WHEN WE RECEIVE THE ATTENDANCE INFORMATION WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO GET AN UPDATE ON ENROLLMENT AS WELL? I'M HEARING THAT A LOT OF SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF PARENTS HAVE PULLED OUT OF ACPS TO GO TO PRIVATE SETTINGS BECAUSE THEY'RE IN PERSON OR PRIVATE SCHOOLS BECAUSE THEY'RE IN PERSON.
I DON'T SEE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR NOW BUT OF COURSE YOU KNOW THE EMAIL ADDRESS TO SEND THEM TO.
NOW IF I COULD GET A MOTION TO ADJOURN SO WE CAN GO INTO OUR WORK SESSION THAT
[00:40:25]
WOULD BE WONDERFUL.>> I'LL CALL FOR THE ROLL CALL VOTE.
WE'RE ADJOURNED AT 5:43.
