SO, WELCOME EVERYONE, THIS IS THE SPECIAL CALLED MEETING FOR JUNE 5, 2020.

[Call to Order]

[00:00:13]

I AM CALLING THE MEETING TO ORDER AT 12:04.

FIRST OFF, LET'S SEE, I'M GOING TO CALL EVERYBODY'S NAME TO SEE THAT YOU HERE.

PLEASE REPLY WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME.

ALL NINE OF US ARE PRESENT AND ACCOUNTED FOR.

SO WE WILL MOVE ON.

WHEN WE MOVED TO VIRTUAL MEETINGS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO WE PARED DOWN OUR AGENDA

[Item 2]

TO MAKE OUR MEETING SHORTER.

THIS WEEK I ASKED FOR THE MOMENT OF SILENCE TO BE ADDED BACK TO THE AGENDA.

NORMALLY, THE NOT MOMENT OF SILENCE IS UNSTRUCTURED AND INDIVIDUAL CAN USE IT TO REFLECT, MEDITATE, FOCUS AREA AT EACH INDIVIDUAL DECIDES WHAT IS BEST.

WHEN WE HAD TRAGEDIES THAT IMPACT STUDENTS AND SCHOOL SETTING SUCH AS SCHOOL SHOOTINGS WE HAVE DEDICATED MOMENTS OF SILENCE TO PEOPLE MOST IMPACTED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

AT THIS.BECAUSE, WE HAVE HAD MUCH TRAUMA AND A LOSS TO MINE.

FIRST WE HAVE THE COVID-19 THREATEN THOSE IN OUR FAMILY AND BEYOND.

OUR ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FAMILY IS EXPRESSING NONCOVERED RELATED DEATHS SINCE OUR TRANSITION TO VIRTUAL MEETINGS.

OUR COMMUNITIES AND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN TRAUMATIZED BY MULTIPLE EVENTS AT THAT POINT TO JUST HOW PRESENT RACISM CONTINUES TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY.

SCHOOL SYSTEMS CAN PLAY A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT ROLE IN ADDRESSING THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH RACISM.

IT IS NOT AN EASY TASK.

TODAY I'M ASKING PEOPLE TO DEVOTE THEIR MOMENT OF SILENCE TO REMEMBER ALL IN OUR ACPS FAMILY, AND BE WHO HAVE SUFFERED ILLNESS, LOSS AND RACIAL INJUSTICE AND REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO THE WORK OF ELIMINATING INJUSTICE AND WORK TOWARDS ENSURING EQUITY FOR ALL STUDENTS.

THERE ARE MANY EXAMPLES OF RACISM TO CONSIDER, BUT I HAVE CHOSEN TO REFLECT ON THE EXPANSES OF CHRISTIAN COOPER, WHO HAVE SURVIVED HIS ENCOUNTER WITH RACISM AND GEORGE FLOYD IF THAT DID NOT NOW I ASK FOR A MOMENT OF SILENCE.

MY PICTURE HAS GONE AWAY AGAIN.

BECAUSE I MUST HAVE HAD SOMETHING OPEN EARLIER.

THANK YOU EVERYONE.

WE WILL MOVE ON.

COULD I HAVE A MOTION TO ADOPT THE AGENDA FOR TODAY, PLEASE?

[Item 3]

>> I MOVE THAT WE ADOPT TODAY'S AGENDA.

LEARNING SUMMER PLAN.

I'M TURNING IT OVER TO DOCTOR HUTCHINS.

>> THANK YOU, MADAM CHAIR.

BEFORE WE GO INTO THE SUMMER LEARNING, OUR CFO WANTED TO MAKE A COUPLE OF REMARKS.

I WAS GOING TO TURN THINGS OVER TO MR. TURNER.

>> YES, THANK YOU DOCTOR HUTCHINS.

THANK YOU SCHOOL BOARD FOR ALLOWING ME A BRIEF MOMENT.

I JUST WANTED TO THANK OUR TEAM.

THIS YEAR HAS BEEN A DIFFERENT AND CHALLENGING YEAR AS WE WENT TO THE BUDGET FROM WORKING OVER THE WINTER BREAK TO PUT TOGETHER WHAT WE BELIEVE WOULD BE A SOLID BUDGET TO MOVING FORWARD IN 2021.

HAVING TO BE DROVE BACK INTO THE BUDGET SEASON TO ADAPT TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

AND THEN WORKING FOR A REVISED BUDGET HERE THROUGH MAY AND JUNE.

I JUST WANTED TO THANK THE TEAM FOR ALL OF THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION, AND BEING ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER THIS REVISED BUDGET WHILE ALSO DEALING WITH REALLOCATING THE FUNDS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DIVISION SO WE CAN ENSURE THAT THE DISTANCE LEARNING PLAN BE SUCCESSFUL AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR, AS WELL AS MOVING INTO NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

I ALSO WANTED TO THANK OUR STAFF, AND ACCOUNTING STAFF AS WELL AS GENERAL SERVICES AND PROCUREMENT TO FOR BEING ABLE TO KEEP PROJECTS MOVING.

PAYCHECKS GETTING TO EMPLOYEES AND VENDORS BEING PAID FOR PROJECTS TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THIS PANDEMIC, AS WELL AS PUTTING TOGETHER OUR LEARNING KITS THAT WENT OUT TO STUDENTS AS WELL AS COORDINATING THE RECEIVING END DISTRIBUTION OF OUR MAIL FROM THE 18 BUILDINGS THAT HAVE BEEN CLOSE FOR THE LAST THREE MONTHS.

A BIG THANK YOU FOR EVERYBODY ON THE TEAM HARD WORK AND DEDICATION.

THAT IS ALL.

THANK YOU FOR THE TIME.

>> THANK YOU, MR. TURNER, FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP DURING THIS TIME AS WELL WITH THE COLLABORATION YOU HAVE HAD WITH ALL OF OUR CHIEFS AND PRINCIPALS, EVERYBODY WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED.

I SECOND WHAT YOU SAID TO ALL OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS.

AS WE TRANSITION INTO SUMMER LEARNING, I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT -- BEFORE WE TURN THINGS OVER TO DOCTOR MANN, I WANT TO SAY THIS CONTINUITY OF LEARNING PLAN 3.0 IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US T PROVIDE ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN ACPS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO REMAIN ENGAGED DURING THE MONTH OF JULY.

AND, I JUST WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR TO EVERYONE OUT THERE, I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS EVERY

[00:15:13]

WEEK, THIS IS NOT MANDATORY, IT IS EXPECTED, BUT IT IS NOT MANDATORY.

FAMILIES CAN OPT OUT OF THIS SUMMER LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

WE HOPE WE WILL BE ABLE TO CLEAR THE AIR, WHICH WE HAVE DONE THROUGH OUR FAQS OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

THE FACT THAT THERE IS A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS LEARNING.

DOCTOR MANN WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE MORE WITH THAT.

I WANT TO TURN THINGS OVER TO DOCTOR MANN TO TAKE US INTO OUR PRESENTATION FOR TODAY.

>> THANK YOU, DOCTOR HUTCHINS.

I'M SHARING MY SCREEN.

WERE YOU GOING TO MAKE SOME COMMENTS?

>> YOU ARE MUTED.

>> GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE, I WANTED TO QUICKLY MAKE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS TO SUPPORT WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT HAS JUST SHARED.

ALSO TO SAY, AT THE CORE OF THE SUMMER LEARNING PLAN IS A REAL COMMITMENT FOR THREE MAJOR OUTCOMES.

ONE IS TO ENGAGE, TO ENRICH, AND TO PREPARE THE STUDENTS.

AS HE HAS ALSO INDICATED, WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO -- WE ARE TRYING TO MINIMIZE THE SUMMER LEARNING LAWS.

IN ADDITION TO THAT WE ARE TRYING TO MINIMIZE WHAT HAS OCCURRED IN TERMS OF ACADEMIC LOSS DURING THE PANDEMIC.

AGAIN, THIS IS AN EFFORT TO NOT BE ABLE TO ONLY SUPPORT STUDENTS AND CATCHING UP WITH GRADE LEVEL CONTENT.

DOCTOR MANN WILL DESCRIBE MANY OF THE ENGAGING OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL BE AFFORDED MANY STUDENTS DURING THE SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM.

ON THE NEXT SLIDE WE JUST QUICKLY WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU THE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS THAT FRAMED THE SUMMER LEARNING.

ONE IS JUST TO EXPLAIN, WHY ARE WE OFFERING SUMMER LEARNING? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SUMMER LEARNING.

SOME OF THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES THAT FRAMED THE SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM HE WILL GO INTO DETAIL AND EXPLAIN THE PROGRAMS, BECAUSE THE PROGRAM OPTIONS FOR PRE-K ALL THE WAY THROUGH 12TH GRADE.

AGAIN, HE WILL HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE AND TO GIVE STUDENTS A JUMPSTART.

IN ADDITION TO THAT THERE IS A REAL COMMITMENT TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE MEETING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND ENGLISH LEARNERS.

HE WILL DESCRIBE SOME OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND OPTIONS.

LASTLY, THE EXTENT TO WHICH THERE IS A REAL COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS DURING THE FOUR WEEKS OF THE SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM.

THIS SLIDE REALLY CAPTURES AGAIN, WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT HAS ALREADY INDICATED, BUT JUST QUICKLY WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN A TYPICAL YEAR IN TERMS OF SUMMER LEARNING LOSS.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THE SUMMER PROGRAM THAT THIS PROGRAM IS MITIGATING AND TRY TO MINIMIZE ANY FURTHER LOSS.

IT PROVIDES MANY OPPORTUNITIES STUDENTS GRADE LEVEL CONTENT.

WHAT IS SO UNIQUE ABOUT THIS SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM IN COMPARISON TO THE PAST IS THE VARIOUS ACADEMIC OPTIONS FOR A JUMPSTART TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL.

THANK YOU, AGAIN, FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY FOR DOCTOR MANN TO SHARE THE MANY FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES OF THE SUMMER LEARNING FOR ALL.

>> THANK YOU, DR. MOZINGO.

GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE TEAM.

THERE IS AN ARMY OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HELPED DEVELOP THE CHARGE THAT DOCTOR HUTCHINS GAVE US IN APRIL TO DEVELOP SUMMER SCHOOL FOR ALL.

IT TOOK A PANDEMIC.

BUT THIS IS ONE OF HIS IDEAS WHEN HE FIRST CAME ON BOARD THAT WE OFFER SUMMER SCHOOL FOR ALL.

I WILL NOT NAME THEM ALL INDIVIDUAL.

BUT FROM OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD OFFICE, I DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL COUNSELING, OUR DIRECTOR OF ONLINE LEARNING, TECHNOLOGY SERVICES, COMMUNICATIONS, HUMAN RESOURCES, SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION, ENGLISH LEARNERS, ALL OF OUR CURRICULUM SPECIALISTS, ALL OF THE TEACHERS THAT GAVE FEEDBACK TO THE CURRICULUM SPECIALIST ON WHAT WOULD BE INCLUDED.

ALL OF THE PRINCIPLES AND COORDINATORS WHO WILL BE WORKING THE SUMMER, AND THE FEEDBACK WE GOT FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS ON SUMMER LEARNING.

I WILL NAME TWO PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN AT EVERY SINGLE MEETING WITH ME BY NAME, THAT IS DOCTOR KINCAID AND MY ADMIN ASSISTANT.

THANK YOU ALL.

THIS IS A TEAM EFFORT.

U PRESENT ON THEIR BEHALF.

WE WOULD JUMP INTO THE MEAT OF THE PRESENTATION.

AS DOCTOR HUTCHINS AND DR. OZINGO HAVE INDICATED WE HAVE GUIDING PRINCIPLES.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE FOR SUMMER SCHOOL FOR ALL THAT MEANS EVERYONE IS INCLUDED.

THAT MEANS OUR SPECIAL POPULATIONS.

OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION AND EL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE DIRECT SERVICES.

WE WILL MAKE SURE WORKING WITH SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION, AND THEIR SPECIALIST ON MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM CASE MANAGERS, BUT ALSO FROM SCHOOLS IF WE NEED SMALLER CLASSES.

ALSO SETTING UP A EL AND SPECIAL EDUCATION'S AND SPECIAL ED TEACHERS.

FLEXIBILITY; WE KNOW THAT THE EXPECTED, AND THE ARTICLES THAT CAME OUT THROUGH EVERYONE INTO A TIZZY.

THIS SUMMER PROGRAM OFFERS YOU THE ABILITY TO STAY IN ALEXANDRIA, GO TO EUROPE,

[00:20:02]

DRIVE TO FLORIDA AND DO THIS ANYWHERE YOU WOULD LIKE.

WE HAVE TAKEN THE FEEDBACK FROM OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS.

WE'VE TRIED TO MAKE ONE STOP SHOPPING.

WE'VE BEEN MEETING WITH OUR TECHNOLOGY SERVICES TEAM ON USING CLEVER ON CAMPUS EVERYONE GOES TO ONE PLACE.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO SEARCH FOR A GOOGLE FORM OR OTHER PLACES.

THERE'S ONE PLACE FOR FAMILY TO GO.

IF YOU, LATER ON IN THE PRESENTATION DON'T WANT TO START SUMMER SCHOOL AT 9:00 A.M.

YOU CAN STARTED AT 9:00 P.M.

T PROGRAM.

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT TAKING A BOOST COURSE, OR A CREDIT RECOVERY COURSE, YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME FLEXIBILITY, LIKE I HAVE A GRADUATING SENIOR WHO GRADUATED YESTERDAY, SHE DOES NOT MOVE UNTIL AROUND NOON.

IF YOU WANT TO START YOUR SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES AT NOON, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO DO THAT.

CREATIVITY; WE HAVE KEPT MANY OF OUR ASPECTS FROM OUR NORMAL SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM.

WE HAVE INQUIRY LESSONS FOR STUDENTS IN THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE.

HE WAS SEEN A SECOND HOW STUDENTS WILL ACTUALLY SUBMIT WORK FOR THEIR INQUIRY PROJECT.

ALSO HAVE STUDENTS SHOWCASES.

WE HAVE FIGURED OUT A WAY TO OFFER ALL STUDENTS, IF THEY CHOOSE THAT THEY CAN TAKE ONE WEEK OF SPANISH, GERMAN, FRENCH, OR CHINESE.

NORMALLY YOU HAVE TO BE INVITED TO OUR ELEMENTARY PROGRAM.

THAT IS ONLY FOR THE THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

EXPENDING THIS OPPORTUNITY.

AND THEN CHOICE; YOU CAN OPT OUT OF ACADEMICS BUT YOU STILL MAY CHOOSE TO DO BAND CAMP.

YOU CAN ALSO CHOOSE TO DO AP BOOT CAMP, AP CALCULUS BOOT CAMP AND THEN ALSO MIDDLE SCHOOL PREP AND KINDERGARTEN PREP.

WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE BOOST COURSES.

WE'VE NEVER OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR CURRENT FIFTH-GRADERS THROUGH 11TH GRADERS TO HAVE A PREP CLASS TO GET THEM READY FOR THE NEXT LEVEL.

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT FIFTH-GRADERS, TO BE ABLE TO CLOSE THE CHAPTER ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND HEAD ONTO MIDDLE SCHOOL, TO ACTUALLY TAKE AN ELA CLASS OR MATH CLASS.

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT WHO HAS TAKEN A MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH COURSE ALREADY WE WILL ENROLL YOU IN THE BOOST COURSE THAT ALIGNS WITH THE COURSE YOU WILL TAKE THIS FALL.

THE SAME THING HAPPENS FOR EIGHTH GRADERS, AND THEN PEOPLE GOING TO NINTH GRADE THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT BOOST COURSE THEY WILL SIGN UP FOR.

WE WILL USE YOUR COURSE REGISTRATION FROM THE SPRING TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE PROPER COURSE.

SUMMER PROGRAMS. I WILL NOT READ ALL OF THESE TO YOU.

THIS LOOKS VERY FAMILIAR.

FORTRAN WANT TO OFFER AS MANY PROGRAMS AS WE ARE FOR FREE, THE ONLY PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD HAVE A FEE, IS IF YOU ARE TAKING NEW CREDIT COURSES.

THIS IS FOLLOWING OUR PAST PRACTICE.

WE ARE ALSO IN ALIGNED WITH OUR NEIGHBORS.

WE ARE CHEAPER THAN FAIRFAX AND ARLINGTON.

ARLINGTON RAISED THE PRICE OF GOING INTO THE SUMMER.

WE HAVE ADDED SOME HERE.

WE HAVE NEVER OFFERED PRE-K SERVICES.

TO HAVE A PRE-K PROGRAM FOR OUR KIDS, YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY IN OUR PRE-K PROGRAM NOW, ALSO ADDING AP CALCULUS BOOT CAMP, THE BOOST COURSES.

WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE SUMMER BRIDGE FOR EXCEL, THEN AS I HAVE MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY THE BOOST COURSES AND WE WILL STILL HAVE OUR GW HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM FOR THE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THAT PROGRAM.

AND THEN IF YOU ARE WONDERING, WE ARE NOT CHARGING A FEE FOR SUMMER LANGUAGE ACADEMY WHICH IS NORMALLY A FEE FOR FAMILIES THAT ARE IN THE DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM.

THIS SUMMER THOSE PROGRAMS ARE FREE.

IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE FOR PAYING FOR A NEW CREDIT COURSE WE WILL STICK WITH OUR PAST PRACTICE OF WORKING WITH YOU ON THAT AND MAKING SURE THAT WE WORK WITH YOU IN THE FAMILY ON FINDING A WAY AT A REDUCED RATE OR EVEN FREE IF NEED BE.

ENGAGING WITH OUR STUDENTS AT HOME.

FOR PRE-K WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH THE CENTER OF ALEXANDRIA'S CHILDREN ON SMART BEGINNINGS TO PROVIDE LEARNING PACKETS TO FOCUS ON ARTS AND COLOR.

THIS FOCUS ON ACADEMIC SKILLS SUCH AS EARLY READING SKILLS, MATH, SCIENCE AND PHYSICAL SKILLS IN A FUN WAY.

AGAIN, TRYING TO HAVE OUTDOOR FUN AND SCIENCE DISCOVERY.

THESE ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR OUR YOUNGSTERS AS THEY PREPARE TO ACTUALLY GO TO KINDERGARTEN IN THE FALL.

WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY AND THANK YOU TO JANE RICHARDSON AND HER TEAM AND THEIR PARTNERSHIP FOR CREATING THESE EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR PRE-K STUDENTS JUST LIKE EVERYONE PRE-K AND FOURTH GRADE WILL HAVE THE KIT MAIL HOLD TO THEM INCLUDING THE BOOKS.

SOME LESSONS LEARNED FROM OUR CURRENT PRACTICE AS WE LOOK AT KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FOURTH GRADE.

THE LEARNING KITS WILL AGAIN BE MAILED HOME WITH BOOKS.

[00:25:01]

ALSO KEY ACADEMIC SKILLS NECESSARY FOR THIS FALL.

YOU HAVE HANDS-ON MATERIAL THAT WILL INCLUDE INQUIRY PROJECTS, SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS, MATH, LITERACY ART, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND WORLD LANGUAGE.

THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES COME AT THEIR TIME COME IF THEY WANT A LIVE ZOOM LESSON OR CLASS MEETING THEY CAN DO THAT.

IF THEY DO NOT, THE TEACHER WILL BE RECORDING THOSE ON THE FAMILY WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS THOSE ANY TIME THAT THEY WOULD LIKE.

WE ARE GOING TO KEEP THE VIDEOS UP FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER.

IF YOU DECIDE THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO START YOUR KIT UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF JULY.

YOU CAN STILL GO BACK TO JULY 6 AND VIEW THOSE VIDEOS.

SO, WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PUBLIC KNEW THE WORK THAT WAS BEING DONE FROM OUR CURRICULUM SPECIALIST.

WHAT HAPPENED? THERE IT IS.

HOPEFULLY THIS WILL WORK.

>> THE THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE SUMMER LEARNING COURSE WAS ON CAMPUS.

IT WAS SELECTED SO THE STUDENTS WOULD HAVE ONE LOCATION TO ACCESS ALL OF THEIR MATERIALS FOR SUMMER LEARNING.

ONCE STUDENTS LOG INTO CAMP AS THEY WILL SEE THERE SCHEDULE, AS WELL AS A LINK TO ADDITIONAL ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES THAT THEY CAN COMPLETE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

ONCE THEY CLICK ON THEIR DAY IN THEIR WEEKLY SCHEDULE IT WILL TAKE THEM TO THEIR SCHEDULE FOR THAT DAY.

EACH DAY -- >> SORRY.

I'M HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

>> THE LAYOUT IS THE SAME WHERE IT WALKS THROUGH THE SUGGESTED SCHEDULE.

THE ACTIVITIES THAT FALL UNDER EACH OF THOSE TIME FRAMES.

I WILL WALK YOU THROUGH A COUPLE OF THOSE, AND THEN SOME OF THE ADDITIONAL FEATURES THAT CAMPUS HAS TWO SUPPORT SOME OF OUR STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS AND OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES.

AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH PHASE, STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR INDEPENDENT READING.

BUT THEY ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS THOSE ARE READ ALOUD VIDEO READ BY ONE OF OUR TEACHERS.

THE OTHER NICE THING -- UNTIL 10:00 A.M.

EVERY DAY STUDENTS WILL CONNECT WITH THEIR ONLINE TEACHER.

>> CAN YOU ALL SEE THE VIDEO?

>> WE CANNOT SEE THE VIDEO, BUT WE CAN HEAR IT.

>> OKAY.

CAN YOU SEE IT NOW?

>> YES.

FOR INDEPENDENT READING OR LISTENING TO A READ ALOUD.

AND MORE MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES.

FROM 8:11:30 A.M.

UNTIL 12:30 P.M.

IS DESIGNATED FOR STUDENT INDEPENDENT WORK.

SO FOR THIS PARTICULAR DAY, STUDENTS WOULD BE WORKING ON MATH AND SCIENCE.

FOR EACH DAY, AND EACH CONTENT AREA, STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A LIST OF THE PAGES FROM THEIR LEARNING PACKETS THAT THEY WIL COMPLETING.

ANY MANIPULATIVES OR MATERIALS THAT THEY WOULD NEED FROM THEIR LEARNING KITS THAT THEY ARE BEING MAILED, THIS PARTICULAR DAY, STUDENTS WOULD USE THE BASE 10 BLOCKS FROM THEIR MATH MANIPULATIVES.

EACH DAY ALSO PROVIDES VIDEOS.

THESE ARE LITTLE LESSONS THAT STUDENTS CAN ACCESS IN ORDER TO HELP THEM COMPLETE THEIR WORK.

AGAIN, THOSE ARE EMBEDDED DIRECTLY IN THE DAILY SCHEDULE PAGE.

DURING THIS TIME, STUDENTS WILL ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH THEIR TEACHER, DURING TEACHER OFFICE HOURS.

IF A STUDENT IS WORKING ON MATH, OR SCIENCE ACTIVITIES AND THEY NEED SOME SUPPORT, THEY CAN SIMPLY HOP ON ZOOM AND CONNECT WITH THEIR TEACHER.

THIS IS ALSO A TIME WHERE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH HER COUNSELOR.

COUNSELORS WILL BE PROVIDING MANY LESSONS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

ONE OF THE OTHER NICE FEATURES OF CAMPUS THAT IS GOING TO BE ESPECIALLY HELPFUL WHEN STUDENTS WORK ON THE INQUIRY PROJECTS THAT ARE ALSO LOCATED WITHIN

[00:30:03]

CAMPUS.

I AM GOING TO SHOW YOU ONE OF THOSE.

THIS PARTICULAR INQUIRY PROJECT IS CALLED OUR HISTORICAL MOMENT.

THE INQUIRY PROJECT, STUDENTS WORK THROUGH PAGES THAT ARE CREATED IN CAMPUS TO COMPLETE AN INQUIRY PROJECT.

I WANTED TO SHOW YOU THIS PAGE TO DEMONSTRATE SOME OF THE FEATURES THAT CAMPUS HAS THE SUPPORT OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS AND OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES.

CAMPUS HAS AN IMMERSIVE READER.

A THE PAGE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

ANOTHER NICE FEATURE OF THE IMMERSIVE READER IS THAT I CAN CLICK ON A BUTTON, OR A WORD AND IT WILL TRANSLATE THAT WORD FOR ME INTO MY CHOSEN LANGUAGE.

THERE ARE MANY LANGUAGES THAT CAMPUS SUPPORTS.

NOT ONLY IN TRANSLATION BUT ALSO IN READ ALOUD.

I HAVE SPANISH SELECTED.

WHEN I CLICKED ON HISTORY I CAN HAVE THE WORD READ TO ME IN ENGLISH.

I CAN ALSO HAVE IT READ ALOUD TO ME IN SPANISH.

IT ALSO PROVIDES A VISUAL PICTURE DICTIONARY FOR ME.

FOR STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NEED ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS WITH LANGUAGE, ALONG WITH TRANSLATING JUST A WORD WE CAN ALSO HAVE IT TRANSLATE THE ENTIRE PAGE.

NOT ONLY DOES IT TRANSLATE THE ENTIRE PAGE TO OUR CHOSEN LANGUAGE, BUT IT WILL READ THE PAGE ALOUD IN THAT LANGUAGE.

ANOTHER ADDITIONAL FEATURE THAT CAMPUS HAS THAT CAN HELP SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS WHO MIGHT STRUGGLE WITH FOCUS WHEN THEY READ IS A LINE READER TOOL.

THIS ALLOWS STUDENTS INSTEAD OF BEING OVERWHELMED WITH A PAGE FULL OF WORDS TO FOCUS ON THE DOCUMENT ONE LINE AT A TIME.

I DIDN'T REALIZE I HAD TO SHARE MY SCREEN.

WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PUBLIC SAW THAT WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE MAKE THESE MATERIALS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

IF YOU ARE AT HOME, OR SOMEWHERE THAT YOU CAN LOG INTO CAMPUS YOU CAN STILL RECEIVE THE SUPPORTS THAT YOU NEED.

THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE TEAM FOR PUTTING THAT TOGETHER.

AGAIN, A STUDENT CAN CLICK ON THE DAY, AND WE ARE CONTINUING TO TWEAK, ADD AND REFINE SOME OF OUR MATERIALS.

WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR MORE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS TO ACCESS ON THEIR OWN IF THEY WANT TO GO BEYOND THE KIT OR THE ACTUAL INQUIRY PROJECT.

ON THE SCREEN, YOU CANNOT SEE IT BECAUSE OF TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

HERE IS A SAMPLE SCHEDULE.

AGAIN, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO START AT 8:30.

THIS IS JUST A TIME IF YOU WANT TO GO INTO THE ACTUAL -- I DON'T KNOW WHY IT SAYS K-2 ACTIVITIES.

YOU CAN ACTUALLY GO IN AND START ANY TIME THAT YOU.

AS WE SAID, FLEXIBILITY IS KEY HERE.

ALL OF THE LESSONS ARE RECORDED.

IF A FAMILY WOULD LIKE THEY COULD PICK UP THE SCHEDULE ANYTIME THAT THEY WANT.

THE VIDEOS WILL ALWAYS BE RECORDED.

WE ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WAYS WE HAVE HEARD FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS PRIMARILY THAT WE WANT TO OFFER SUPPORT TO OUR PRE-K FAMILIES.

WE ARE WORKING ON A HOT LINE AND ALSO HOURS.

AS WE CONTINUE TO REFINE OUR HANDBOOKS AND RELY ON INFORMATION FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ONLINE LEARNING.

WHY SHOULD OFFER HOURS LOOK LIKE? K-12 GRADE WILL BE IN STRUCTURE WITHOUT.

ALSO MAKING SURE AS WE TRAIN EXPECTATIONS OF ONLINE TEACHING THIS SUMMER.

I WAS EXTREMELY EXCITED WHEN THEY SAID THEY ACTUALLY HAD BOOST COURSES.

A BOOST COURSE FOR MOST OF US WE THINK OF THIS AS PREP.

HERE YOU WILL SEE THERE IS A DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT AT THE BEGINNING.

THIS WILL LEAD DOWN AND INDIVIDUALIZED PATH FOR A STUDENT.

THIS IS A SELF-DIRECTED PROGRAM.

EACH COURSE, IF YOU'RE DOING ENGLISH AND MATH, THAT IS 20 HOURS FOR EACH.

YESTERDAY OUR CURRICULUM SPECIALIST MET WITH INGENUITY AND STARTED TO MAP OUT WHAT SOL'S WERE NEEDED FROM THIS PAST YEAR.

AND ALSO WHAT SOL'S NEED TO BE READY FOR STUDENT TO BE READY TO ACCESS GRADE LEVEL

[00:35:04]

CONTENT IN THE FALL.

OUR SPECIAL ED AND EL SPECIALIST WILL TAKE THAT INFORMATION AND MODIFY IT AND MAKE MODIFIED BOOST COURSES IF NEED BE FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED THAT LEVEL OF SERVICE.

IT ALSO HAS A PROGRESS MONITORING TOOL, REAL-TIME REPORTING.

THE COURSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE IN ENGLISH IN MATH.

WE WENT WITH SOCIAL STUDIES AND BIOLOGY, AT NINTH GRADE, AND ALSO SOCIAL STUDIES AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE THAT IS GREAT.

TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS, GOING INTO EIGHTH GRADE, HAVE A THREE YEAR ACCUMULATIVE TEST.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE PROVIDE THEM A BOOST COURSE THERE.

ALSO WE KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF BIOLOGY IN NINTH GRADE.

THAT IS THE ONLY SCIENCE TESTED THEY MAY TAKE.

AND THEN ALSO MAKING SURE THAT WE PREPARE OUR STUDENTS FOR WORLD GEOGRAPHY ONE IN NINTH GRADE.

IF A STUDENT IS TAKING AN ONLINE COURSE FOR NEW CREDIT OR CREDIT RECOVERY.

THE TEACHER WILL WORK FOR HOURS.

MOST OF THE TEACHERS WILL WORK 9-11:00 A.M.

IF THEY ARE TEACHING A BOOST COURSE, FOUR DAYS A WEEK.

EVERY OTHER PROGRAM IS STILL A FOUR-DAY WORKWEEK WITH TWO HOURS.

NORM ARE SUMMER SCHOOL DAYS OR 20 HOURS A WEEK AND WE HAVE KNOCKED THAT DOWN TO 8 THIS YEAR AND A FOUR-DAY WORKWEEK.

IF YOU ARE TEACHING NEW CREDIT AND CREDIT RECOVERY IT IS A FIVE DAY WEEK FOR FOUR HOURS A DAY.

SOME OF THE REASONING BEHIND THIS IS WE STILL HAVE CREDIT RECOVERY, A SEAT TIME REQUIRED REQUIREMENT OF 70 HOURS.

WE DO NOT HAVE GUIDANCE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION THAT THOSE HOURS ARE GOING TO BE SUSPENDED IN THE SUMMER.

CURRENTLY WE ARE OPERATING UNDER THE NORMAL RULES OF 70 AND 140.

A TEACHER HERE WAS SPENT FOUR HOURS A DAY AND THEY WILL BE BROKEN UP AS SUCH.

ONE HOUR OF STUDENT OUTREACH.

TRYING TO ENGAGE THE STUDENTS WHETHER THAT BE ZOOM, E-MAIL OR PHONE.

NO INSTRUCTION.

THAT IS DELIVERING INSTRUCTION VIA CAMPUS OR ZOOM.

GRADING, STUDENTS WILL BE TURNING IN THEIR WORK.

OFFICE HOURS.

AS I SAID EARLIER, WE WILL BE STRUCTURING OFFICE HOURS AND PROVIDING GUIDANCE ON WHAT WE WANT TO HAPPEN.

E EXPECTATIONS ARE.

THIS WILL BE DONE VIA ZOOM, E-MAIL, OR PHONE.

SPECIALIZED SUPPORTS, WE ARE EXCITED, AS WE, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A VERY LONG TIME OFFER DIRECT SERVICES, NOT JUST TO OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS, BUT ALSO OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS.

OUR ENGLISH LEARNER STUDENTS WILL HAVE SUPPORT WITH AN EL TEACHER, OR IF THEY NEED BE IN SELF-CONTAINED SETTING, DEPENDING ON THEIR LANGUAGE LEVEL WE WILL STILL OFFER RELATED SERVICES FOR SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY, AND THEN ALSO OUR CASE MANAGERS WILL BE MAKING A RECOMMENDATION ON COURSE PARTICIPATION.

WHETHER THAT IS THE REGULAR BOOST COURSE, OR THEY NEED A MODIFIED, DIFFERENTIATED LEVEL.

AGAIN, PROVIDING SUPPORT BASED ON STUDENT NEED.

WE ARE GOING TO HIRE MORE SPECIAL ED AND EL TEACHERS, MORE SPECIAL ED PRIMARILY.

THEN WE NORMALLY DO DURING THE SUMMER TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS.

AND THEN ALSO THEY WILL STILL HAVE THE SAME ABILITY TO HAVE DIRECT INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS, AND MATH.

I DON'T KNOW IF I AM SMILING, BECAUSE I CAN'T SEE ANYONE'S FACES.

I AM REALLY EXCITED AND OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STUDENT AND OUR WORK WITH MR. SAMPSON ON PROVIDING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

WE WORKED WITH SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION TO PUT OUT A ROBUST PLAN TO HIRE A TON OF COUNSELORS, SOCIAL WORKERS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS.

WE KNOW TRAUMA IS REAL IN THIS DECIMATED THAT FOR MANY OF OUR STUDENTS AND ALSO ADULTS.

WE ARE HAVING COUNSELORS, PSYCHOLOGISTS AT ALL GRADE LEVELS FOR STUDENT SUPPORT.

COUNSELORS AT ALL LEVELS WILL BE DOING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LESSONS AND SEMINARS FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THIS IS NEW.

WE HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE.

SECONDARY COUNSELORS WILL ALSO FOCUS ON ACADEMICS.

WE WILL HAVE ONE FOCUS ON CAREER IN COLLEGE AND THEN ALSO OUR ENGLISH LEARNING NEEDS.

BEFORE I TURN IT BACK OVER TO DOCTOR HUTCHINGS, TODAY, WE HAD 495 FAMILIES OPT OUT.

WE HAVE HAD 403 STUDENTS REQUEST TO REGISTER FOR NEW CREDIT COURSES.

WE HAVE HAD 125 STUDENTS REQUEST TO GO INTO OUR ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS WHICH COULD BE BAND CAMP, THEATER CAMP, AP CAMP AND ALSO AP CALCULUS BOOT CAMP.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE 35 STUDENTS WHO HAVE REQUESTED CREDIT RECOVERY COURSES FOR

[00:40:01]

THE SUMMER.

DOCTOR HUTCHINS, BACK TO YOU.

>> DOCTOR MAN, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION.

THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE TEAM.

I KNOW THIS IS A HUGE EFFORT.

YOU KNOW, I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE MARCH 13.

WE ALL HAVE TO HAVE GRACE, AND WE ALL HAVE TO BE FLEXIBLE.

WHAT WE ARE TAKING ON IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE NOT DONE BEFORE.

THAT IS A LOT OF THE DECISIONS WE ARE BEING FORCED TO MAKE, DURING THIS PANDEMIC.

I ENCOURAGE OUR COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS OUR STAFF TO CONTINUE TO KNOW, WE TAKE FEEDBACK, WE ADJUST, AND WE ARE TRYING TO D THAT WE POSSIBLY CAN TO ENSURE THAT EVERY SINGLE STUDENT RECEIVES WHAT THEY NEED IN REGARDS TO THEIR EARLY NEEDS.

EVEN DURING THE SUMMER.

I THINK IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS IS HAPPENING DURING THE SUMMER.

I WANT TO TURN THINGS OVER TO OUR MADAM CHAIR, SO SHE CAN FACILITATE ANY QUESTIONS THAT BOARD MEMBERS MAY HAVE IN REGARDS TO THE PRESENTATION OR THE LEARNING PLAN 3.0.

>> THANK YOU.

THAT WAS REALLY GOOD.

IN SPITE OF A LITTLE BIT OF TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES I GOT A SENSE OF WHAT KIDS WILL SEE.

WHAT I RECOGNIZED IS THAT YOU DID HEAR PEOPLE THAT COMPLAINED THAT THERE WERE TOO MANY PLATFORMS TO LOG INTO.

HAVING ONE, I FOUND IT CONFUSING FOR YEARS, SO HAVING ONE THAT YOU CAN LOG INTO IS GREAT.

I SEE, MARGARET LORBER HAS A QUESTION OR A COMMENT.

>> YEAH.

THANK YOU.

I AM SO EXCITED.

I JUST HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.

ONE IS A VERY SPECIFIC.

IT MENTIONED THAT THERE WILL BE CO- TEACHING FOR EL AND CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES.

I WONDER, HOW DO YOU DO CO- TEACHING ON VIRTUAL? HAVE WE BEEN DOING THAT ALREADY? AND HOW DO YOU DO THAT IN THIS TYPE OF LEARNING SITUATION?

>> GOOD AFTERNOON.

THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE SOME OF THIS INFORMATION.

THE SHORT ANSWER IS YES AND YES.

YES, CO- TEACHING HAS BEEN TAKING PLACE AND YES WE CONTINUE TO DO IT AND YES THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES IN PLAC DO THAT.

ZOOM HAS A FABULOUS A FEATURE BREAKOUT ROOMS. WE HAVE HAD OUR TEACHERS WHO SUPPORT TO STUDENTS IN THE GENERAL EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH THOSE GENERAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AROUND LESSONS.

THEY HAVE BEEN DOING WORK WITH CLASSES TOGETHER AND BREAKOUT ROOMS. THAT IS WHAT WE PLAN TO DO THIS SUMMER.

DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?

>> YEAH.

I THINK SO.

I MEAN, BECAUSE I'VE HEARD FROM FAMILIES, JUST IN GENERAL, THERE ARE ZOOM CLASSES, AND THEN THERE ARE OTHER CLASSES.

AND -- CAN YOU EXPLAIN A BREAKOUT ROOM JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE TO ME AND HOW THAT -- I'M HAVING A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING HOW THAT WORKS GULF SURE.

YOU KNOW THAT WE FOCUS ON ALL OF THE WORK WE HAVE BEEN DOING AROUND CO- TEACHING.

FOCUSING ON THOSE HIGH YIELD THE BEST PRACTICES.

ONE OF THOSE IS STATION TEACHING.

WHEN WE HAVE INSTRUCTION THAT IS TAKING PLACE FOR ALL STUDENTS.

THERE MAY BE THAT GENERAL INSTRUCTION.

AND THEN STUDENTS CAN BREAK INTO SMALLER GROUPS.

THERE IS A FUNCTION IN ZOOM WHERE CLASSES CAN BE GROUPS -- FOR EXAMPLE, ALL OF US NOW TO BE BROKEN UP INTO SMALLER SETS, AND SMALLER GROUPS.

THERE IS A BREAKOUT PROCESS WITHIN ZOOM.

SO, ONE TEACHER MAY TAKE A GROUP OF STUDENTS AND DO THIS ACTIVITY.

ANOTHER TEACHER MAY TAKE ANOTHER GROUP OF STUDENTS AND BREAKOUT INTO THIS ACTIVITY OVER HERE.

SO THEY CAN DO COLLECTIVE JOINT INSTRUCTION AND THEN THEY CAN BREAKOUT AS WELL.

>> ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU.

IN OTHER WORDS, THAT IS HAPPENING ALREADY AND IT IS GOING TO CONTINUE DURING THE SUMMER AND FIVE IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING?

>> YES.

I AM NOT TELLING YOU THIS IS HAPPENING EVERY PLACE IN EVERY CLASS.

I AM DEFINITELY TELLING YOU THAT IT IS OCCURRING.

WE DO HAVE MECHANISMS FOR IT.

IN FACT, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW THE CONTINUAL SERVICES THAT WAS INCLUDED WITH THE BOARD MATERIAL SO THAT REALLY SPECIFIES HOW

[00:45:03]

SPECIAL ED SERVICES ARE BEING PROVIDED.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT ALL OF THOSE TIER ONE SERVICES THAT IS REALLY WHERE WE ARE LOOKING OUT TO PROVIDING THAT TYPE OF INTERVENTION FOR STUDENTS.

>> OKAY.

NEXT, WE HAVE MS. ALDERTON.

>> THANK YOU.

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE.

I JUST WANTED TO ADD IN A COMMENT.

I LOVE THE EMPHASIS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT AND THE PROGRESS MONITORING PIECE WITH INGENUITY.

I THINK, YOU KNOW, THERE IS SUMMER SCHOOL, THERE IS THE VIRTUAL LEARNING THAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

THE BIG PIECES THAT I WILL CONTINUE TO EMPHASIZE AND I THINK NEEDS TO STAY AT THE FOREFRONT IS THIS NEEDED THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE HER RECOVERY.

WHENEVER THOSE DOORS OPEN BACK UP.

IT IS REALLY ESSENTIAL FOR US TO BE MONITORING WHERE OUR STUDENTS ARE AS THEY GO ALONG THROUGH THE VIRTUAL LEARNING SO THAT WE CAN PLAN EFFECTIVELY FOR, YOU KNOW, WHEN WE "RETURN" HOWEVER THAT LOOKS LIKE.

I JUST WANT TO COMMEND THE TEAM ON THINKING ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT THE SUMMER PROGRAMMING CONNECTS TO OUR RECOVERY PLANNING.

SO, I CAN DEFINITELY SEE, YOU KNOW, HOW EVERYTHING WILL BE CONNECTED AND IT GIVES ME CONFIDENCE AROUND -- WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THE DATA AND INFORMATION WE WILL NEED TO PLAN EFFECTIVELY FOR RECOVERY.

I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

THANK YOU, GUYS.

1020 THANK YOU.

>> NEXT, I HAVE DOCTOR MICHELLE RIEF WITH A QUESTION.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT PRESENTATION, DOCTOR MANN.

IT IS CLEAR THAT A LOT OF WORK HAS WENT INTO DEVELOPING THIS.

I JUST WANT TO, YOU KNOW, ECHO THE THANKS TO ALL OF THE STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAVE WORKED ON IT.

I KNOW, YOU KNOW, THIS IS A DIFFICULT TIME IN OUR COUNTRY WITH THE COVID-19 AND EVERYTHING ELSE HAPPENING.

I KNOW IT IS VERY TAXING ON EVERYONE.

SO, I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF THE EFFORT THAT YOU DID PUT INTO THIS.

JUST A COUPLE OF COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS.

I JUST WANTED TO SPEAK A MINUTE ABOUT THE ROLLOUT.

UM, THE ROLLOUT OF THE 3.0 IS A HOW WE DID THE 2.0.

I THINK THE 2.0 WORKED REALLY NICELY WHEN, YOU KNOW, WE SET IT UP SO THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE TUNED INTO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO HEAR WHAT THE PLAN WAS GOING TO BE.

I THINK IT INCREASE, YOU KNOW, ENGAGEMENT UM AND THAT WAS REALLY EFFECTIVE.

WITH THE 3.0, IT WAS RELEASED AS A BOARD BRIEF, BUT ALSO E-MAILED OUT TO THE COMMUNITY.

SPEAKING UM MY EXPERIENCE AS A BOARD MEMBER, I SAW PARENTS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MANDATORY ASPECT OF IT BEFORE I EVEN HAD A CHANCE TO VIEW THE PLAN MYSELF.

THAT WAS UM, YOU KNOW, THAT WAS REALLY FRUSTRATING AND DISAPPOINTING.

I SAY THAT BECAUSE I'M THINKING ABOUT THE UPCOMING 4.0 ROLLOUT WHICH I KNOW THERE IS GOING TO BE A LOT OF INTEREST IN.

AS THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR ENDS THERE WILL BE A LOT OF PRESSURE TO SHARE OUT THAT INFORMATION, YOU KNOW, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING.

I WANT TO MAKE SURE WE THINK THROUGH THE PROCESS OF HOW WE DO THAT.

I THINK, IF THEY CAN BE SHARED OUT UM, IF THERE CAN BE THIS KIND OF A FORUM WHERE IT IS PRESENTED FIRST, AND THEN THE INFORMATION IS SHARED OUT, YOU KNOW, AFTER THAT, OR SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THAT.

I THINK THAT WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER APPROACH TRADE I THINK, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE INFORMATION.

I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION IN THIS PLAN, AND IT IS HARD TO, YOU KNOW, PUT IT ON PAPER TO REALLY EXPLAIN T THE ASPECTS AND FACETS OF IT.

IT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT THEIR COMMUNICATIONS AUDIT WE HAD WHERE THE AUDITOR TALKED ABOUT THIS IDEA OF THE BITES, SNACK AND MEAL.

SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT THE BIG PICTURE BUT THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO, YOU KNOW, ARE MAKING DECISIONS AND THEY REALLY WANT THIS MORE DETAILED INFORMATION.

I HEARD FROM MULTIPLE PEOPLE WHAT THE WRITTEN CONTENT THAT HAS BEEN PRESENTED HAS LEFT PEOPLE WITH MORE QUESTIONS.

I JUST WANT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO REVIEW THOSE Q AND A THAT IS POSTED ON THE ACPS AT HOME WEBSITE.

THERE HAS BEEN MORE INFORMATION ADDED THERE THAT REALLY CLARIFY SOME THINGS.

I THINK THAT IS REALLY HELPFUL.

UM, I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD TALK ABOUT UM, THIS DECISION ABOUT WHY I ASK PEOPLE TO OPT OUT VERSUS REGISTERING? WHAT WAS THE THINKING BEHIND THAT UM ONE CONCERN I WAS HAVING, AND I APPRECIATE YOU

[00:50:01]

SHARING THE STATISTICS ON HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THINGS AND SO ON.

YOU KNOW, WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE Q&A, IF YOU ARE OPTING OUT, YOUR ONLY OPTING OUT OF THE BOOST CLASSES.

BUT, UM, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THOUGH, YOU KNOW, THE SUMMER CAMPS, THE ENRICHMENT CAMPS YOU CAN STILL DO THAT.

UM, AND THEN, YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR THE NEW CREDIT.

I THINK IT'S -- I MEAN, UNLESS PEOPLE ARE DIGGING INTO THE Q&A, I'M SURE, YOU KNOW, NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE DOING THAT.

I'M SURE THERE ARE A LOT OF QUESTIONS OUT THERE.

I YEARS, YOU KNOW, UM, FAMILIES RECEIVE LIKE A LETTER.

HERE IS WHEN SCHOOL IS STARTING.

HERE'S TO YOUR TEACHER IS, SO ON AND SO FORTH.

THIS PROCESS IS DIFFERENT.

ARE PEOPLE REALLY GOING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON? I'M CONCERNED IF THERE IS GOING TO BE INDIVIDUAL TAILORED OUTREACH.

ARE THERE PLANS TO SHARE ANY INFORMATION? THE THINKING ABOUT ASKING PEOPLE TO OPT OUT VERSUS REGISTER.

IF YOU CAN SPEAK TO THAT, PLEASE GULF I WANTED TO MAKE A COUPLE OF REMARKS, DOCTOR MANN BEFORE YOU GO INTO YOUR RESPONSE.

ONE IS IN REGARDS TO THE COMMUNICATION PIECE.

I AGREE WITH YOU DOCTOR MICHELLE RIEF, THE WAY THE CONTINUITY OF LEARNING 3.0 WASN'T AS SOLID AS WE WOULD HAVE LIKED.

A LESSON LEARNED.

ONE THING -- WE ARE NOT GOING TO SAY THAT WE ARE PERFECT.

I WILL NEVER SAY THAT.

I WILL TELL YOU, AS WE DO NOT MAKE A MISTAKE TWICE, NOT WHILE I AM SUPERINTENDENT.

WE MIGHT MAKE NEW MISTAKES.

WE WILL NOT MAKE THE SAME ONE.

A PART OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAT WE HAD FROM THIS CONTINUITY OF LEARNING PLAN IS ONE, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IF WE ARE NOT READY TO ROLL SOMETHING OUT.

MEANING IT IS NOT READY TO GO PRIME TIME.

WE HAVE TO LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW WE NEED ADDITIONAL TIME.

WE CAN'T JUST TO SAY, WE SAID IT WAS GOOD TO BE THE STATE, WERE GOING TO NEED TO JUST SAY, WE NEED A FEW MORE DAYS.

WE NEED NEED ANOTHER WEEK.

AND THEN WE WILL RELEASE THE PLAN.

I THINK THAT IS JUST WHAT WE HAVE TO GET ACCUSTOMED TO DOING.

WE HAVE BEEN, AS YOU ALL KNOW, WE ARE IN A COMMUNITY THAT DEMANDS.

WHEN YOU DON'T SET A DATE, NOW THEY SAY WE DON'T TRUST YOU.

WE ARE UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE WITH THAT.

I THINK OUR TEAM WAS REALLY NERVOUS.

WE SAID FOR THE PAST MONTH IT WAS GOING TO BE ON MAY 22.

NEEDS TO BE ON MAY 22, RIGHT? LESSON LEARNED.

IF WE NEED MORE TIME WE JUST NEED TO SAY WE NEED MORE TIME, WE ARE SORRY.

WE ARE GOING TO WORK THROUGH THAT.

IN REGARDS TO THE 4.0; NEXT WEEK WE ARE GOING TO BE LAUNCHING OUR WEBPAGE THAT WILL PROVIDE, OR ALLOW THE COMMUNITY TO KIND OF FOLLOW OUR PROGRESS IN REGARDS TO OUR THOUGHT PARTNERS.

WE HAD OUR FIRST MEETING ON TUESDAY.

WE WILL BE RECORDING THOSE MEETINGS.

PEOPLE WILL SEE DISCUSSIONS OF ACTUALLY HAPPENING WITH THOSE MEETINGS.

UM TO FOLLOW SOME OF THE RESEARCH WE ARE USING TO HELP DRAFT UM OUR ACTUAL PLAN.

UM, A COMMUNITY MEMBER, IF THEY CHOOSE COULD BE ENGAGED WITH US ALONG THE WAY.

UM, THAT IS ALLOWING PEOPLE TO HAVE INSIGHT INTO HOW WE DEVELOP A PLAN.

WHICH IS A VERY UNIQUE PROCESS.

WE TYPICALLY DON'T EXPOSE OUR PROCESS THAT WAY.

WE ONLY DO IT IN A SILO.

THIS IS A VERY BIG DEAL.

IT IS VERY COMPLICATED.

UM, BECAUSE WE ARE GOING INTO NEW TERRITORY THAT NO ONE HAS OPEN SCHOOLS WITH A SOCIAL DISTANCING, AND GATHERING GUIDELINES.

OTHER THAN PEOPLE IN FRANCE, CHINA AND ALL OF THOSE OTHER COUNTRIES THAT HAVE OPEN UP ALREADY.

SOME RESEARCH THINGS WE ARE LOOKING AT BECAUSE WE ARE LEARNING FROM THEM WITH SOME MISTAKES THEY HAVE MADE ALONG THAT WAY.

ANOTHER THING, SORRY, MY SON IS CRAWLING ON THE FLOOR.

ANYWAY, I APOLOGIZE.

THE OTHER PIECE BEFORE DOCTOR MANN GOES INTO HIS RESPONSE IS THE PURPOSE IN

[00:55:20]

AS DOING THE OPT OUT? WE FELT THAT WE WOULD HAVE MORE PEOPLE UM WANT TO OPT IN VERSUS OPT OUT.

WE WERE TRYING TO WAY WHICH WOULD BE EASIER.

MISSING SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T KNOW, THEY COULDN'T GET IN OR WHATEVER, WOULD BE A MORE DIFFICULT SITUATION FOR US THAN JUST SAYING, YOU KNOW WHAT? EVERYBODY IS AUTOMATICALLY IN.

IF YOU WANT TO BE OUT, THEN YOU GET OUT YOU CAN OPT OUT.

WE FELT THAT WOULD BE EASIER IN REGARDS TO DEALING WITH COMPANY, ALL OF THE REGISTRATION AND EVERYTHING.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO COMPLICATED FOR US.

WE CHOSE TO DO THE OPT OUT UM, YOU KNOW, OPTION FOR FOLKS.

DOCTOR MANN, YOU MAY WANT TO ELABORATE A LITTLE MORE ON SOME OF THE OTHER QUESTIONS.

>> ALSO, WHEN WE DO OUR NORMAL SUMMER SCHOOL FOR 3RD-5TH GRADE, IT IS OPT IN.

USUALLY WE MAIL LIKE 2500 LETTERS TO FAMILIES.

YOU WOULD BE SHOCKED AND AMAZED AT HOW FEW WE GET BACK.

TO DOCTOR HUTCHINS A POINT, THE OPTING OUT ALSO GAVE US A BETTER SENSE THAT WE CAN TRY TO PLAN KNOWING THAT WE ARE GOING TO NEED UM, EVERY SUMMER, EVERY SINGLE SUMMER I AM ASKED HOW MANY KIDS ARE COMING? I HAVE NO IDEA.

YOU HAVE TO SEND THE RSVP INFORMATION BACK.

NOW THAT WE KNOW WE HAVE ALMOST 500, ONE TODAY SO FAR THAT HAS OPTED OUT.

OPTING OUT UM OPS YOU OUT OF THE, WHEN WE SAY EXPECTED, WE OFFERED EVERYONE SOMETHING FOR FREE.

IF YOU WANT TO OPT OUT YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THAT.

AS LESSONS ARE LEARNED, THANK YOU TO THE TEAM AND THE FEEDBACK FROM THE PARENTS.

WE DO NEED TO CLARIFY THAT YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THE FREE BUT THEN YOU CAN GO TO ENRICHMENT.

WE YOU LOOK AT THE FOREMAN THOSE ARE THE TWO AP BOOT CAMPS ON THE TWO MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS.

YOU ARE OPTING OUT OF THEIR FREE, COMPREHENSIVE, SUMMER LEARNING KIT, OR THE BOOST COURSES RIGHT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL IT IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU WENT TO SUMMER SCHOOL? IF YOU ARE TAKING CREDIT RECOVERY THAT IS USUALLY A CONVERSATION WHERE YOUR COUNSELOR IS GOING TO SAY, HEY, WE NEED TO TALK, YOU FAILED X, Y, AND Z WE NEED TO GET YOU REGISTERED FOR THAT.

WE FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO FINALLY MOVING TO NOT CHARGING FOR CREDIT RECOVERY.

W OPPORTUNITY TO REPEAT THAT COURSE FOR FREE.

FOR NEW CREDIT, IT IS THE SAME WAY.

NORMALLY THAT IS WHERE A STUDENT WOULD GO TO THE COUNSELOR AND SAY, I WANT TO TAKE ONE OF THE NEW COURSES FOR CREDIT AND HELPING THEM UNDERSTAND THAT ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL IS NOT, I WILL USE AN EXAMPLE OF MY OWN CHILD.

SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO TAKE ECON A PERSONAL FINANCE ONLINE AND CLICK AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE.

A WEEK INTO THE COURSE WE HAD A CONVERSATION AND SHE WAS LIKE OH, MY GOODNESS.

I SAID THAT IS WHY I WANTED YOU TO TALK TO YOUR COUNSELOR TO UNDERSTAND THAT TAKING A NEW CREDIT COURSE IS NOT JUST PLAYING ON THE COMPUTER.

THERE ARE TESTS, QUIZZES, READINGS THAT YOU HAVE TO DO.

THE FORM, ACTUALLY WITHIN BE SENT TO A STUDENTS COUNSELOR.

THE COUNSELOR WILL THEN ACTUALLY REGISTER THE STUDENT AND THE PAYMENT INFORMATION WILL THEN BE SENT TO A PARENTS ACCOUNT SO THAT THEY CAN PAY ONLINE AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT TC HAS SET UP ALREADY.

WE KNOW THAT THAT SYSTEM WORKS.

WE ARE ACTUALLY GETTING FEES FROM KIDS WHO GRADUATED A COUPLE YEARS AGO BECAUSE OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.

THANK YOU MICHAEL COVINGTON, LLERENA AND TC FOR THEIR HELP IN HELPING US FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN COLLECT A PAYMENT.

WE KNOW, AND WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH MR. SAMPSON AND TEAM AT TC ON MEETINGS WITH THE COUNSELORS TO CLARIFY TO MAK QUESTIONS THAT MAY GO UNANSWERED.

THE COUNSELORS ARE GOING TO BE A PIVOTAL PIECE BETWEEN NOW AND JULY 6.

ALSO WE ARE GOING TO KEEP REGISTRATION OPEN AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, BECAUSE WE KNOW BEFORE PASSING THE GRADING POLICY A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MANY STUDENTS, IF THEY GET AP THEY MAY NOT NEED TO TAKE THAT CREDIT RECOVERY CLASS.

WE ARE GOING TO LEAVE THE RESTRICTION WINDOW OPEN UNTIL AFTER REPORT CARDS HAPPEN.

GETTING 100% COULD CHANGE YOUR FINAL GRADE FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.

>> GREAT, THANK YOU.

ONE OTHER CLARIFICATION ABOUT THE 4.0, DOCTOR HUTCHINS, WE ARE STILL WAITING ON GUIDELINES WHICH CAN ALSO MAKE IT MORE COMPLICATED WHAT OUR PLANNING IS, RIGHT?

>> YES, WE ARE.

WE ARE HOPING TO GET THAT INFORMATION SOON.

>> ALSO, WE ARE EXPECTING SOME SORT OF PRESENTATION BASED ON THE SOFT PARTNER MEETINGS, I BELIEVE, AT THE END OF THIS MONTH.

THAT WILL BE SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD WILL HEAR THEN.

AGAIN, WITH SOME OF THE TIMELINES OUTSIDE OF OUR CONTROL, IT WILL HAVE TO BE

[01:00:02]

FLEXIBLE.

NEXT, I HAVE VERONICA NOLAN.

>> THANK YOU.

AGAIN, I JUST WANT TO ECHO THE THANKS TO DOCTOR MANN AND YOUR TEAM, AND DOCTOR -- DR. MOZINGO, AND YOUR TEAM AS WELL.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE WHAT HAS BEEN PUT TOGETHER GIVEN THE SHORT TIMEFRAME.

AS MY COMPUTER FROZEN GULF NOTE,, YOU ARE OKAY.

>> OKAY.

JUST WANTED TO ALSO -- I AM EXCITED ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP WITH INGENUITY.

I KNOW AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER HERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LARGER LENS.

I CAN SHARE AS A STUDENT THAT HAS TAKEN TWO OF THE INGENUITY CLASSES, THEY ARE PHENOMENAL.

I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS ESSENTIALLY.

DOCTOR HUTCHINS, DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS IS SOMETHING, IF THIS GOES WELL, THIS HAS BEEN A DREAM OF YOURS TO EXPAND AT SUMMER PROGRAMMING.

IS THIS SOMETHING THAT MIGHT BE CONTINUED IN THE FUTURE? IS THIS CONSIDERED A ONE-TIME SHOTS, OR IS THIS A PILOT? I WOULD BE CURIOUS TO KNOW YOUR LONG-TERM PLANS WITH THIS PARTNERSHIP?

>> YES YOU YET THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE WANT TO CONTINUE AND SUSTAIN WITHIN THE SCHOOL DIVISION.

MOVING FORWARD, OUTSIDE OF THE COVID-19.

>> I THINK THAT IS GREAT.

MY SECOND QUESTION, FOLLOW THIS, I'M CURIOUS, WE WERE REVISITING THE SUMMER PLAN, THAT THERE WAS A HOPE OF DISSEMINATING BOOKS, DURING THE SUMMER.

I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD UNPACK THAT A LITTLE BIT.

I KNOW WITH THE CDC GUIDELINES, I'VE HEARD THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE THAT ACPS HAS BEEN CONCERNED ABOUT.

WITH THE RECENT UPDATES OF THE CDC GUIDELINES, I KNOW FAIRFAX COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HAS STARTED DISTRIBUTING BOOKS AT THE NEW DISTRIBUTION SITES.

I CONSIDER.

I KNOW THERE ARE ORGANIZATIONS IN ALEXANDRIA.

I KNOW THERE IS A HOMEGROWN ORGANIZATION THAT HAS HALF A THOUSAND BOOKS THAT THEY ARE ABLE AND WILLING TO DISTRIBUTE TO STUDENTS OVER THE SUMMER.

IS IS NOT SOMETHING WE MOVE TOWARDS GIVEN THE GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN LISTED? -- LIFTED? 'S THAT SOMETHING WE HAVE CONSIDERED? YES, WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO GET BOOKS TO OUR STUDENTS THAT ARE FIFTH GRADE AND ABOVE.

WE KNOW ACTUALLY HAVING A BOOK IN HAND HELPS.

WE WILL WORK WITH MR. HUFFMAN IN HIS OFFICE AND LOOK AT PARTNERSHIPS, AND ALSO OUR LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST ON STILL CONTINUING TO FIND WAYS TO GET STUDENTS BOOKS.

WE HAVE NOT GIVEN UP ON THE DREAM.

WE KNOW THAT OUR PRE-K THROUGH FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS, THEIR BOOKS WILL BE MAILED HOME.

IF WE CAN SUPPLEMENT THAT WITH BOOKS IN A BAG, WE WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO EXPLORE WAYS TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.

>> THANKS.

ONE LAST FOLLOW-UP.

FOR WHAT THIS IS WORTH, UM, I APPRECIATE THE FAQS.

THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS SUPER HELPFUL.

I THINK THAT IS SOMETHING WE WILL WANT TO DISTRIBUTE.

DOCTOR HUTCHINS, YOU MENTIONED EARLIER THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT A DIVISION IS DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

THERE WILL BE A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

I KNOW ANOTHER DIVISION THAT UM DID A SHORT VIDEO FOR PARENTS TO HAVE THEM UNDERSTAND WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED FOR THEIR SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM.

A LOT OF PARENTS ARE, YOU KNOW, FEELING THE PRESSURE OF HAVING JUGGLED A LOT RECENTLY.

THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE.

EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR PARENTS TO UNDERSTAND.

THE LAST THING I WOULD SAY, THE OTHER THING I'M HEARING A LOT, TOO, FROM PARENT FEEDBACK JUST AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT MS. ALDERTON SAID, HOW IS WHAT THE STUDENTS LEARNING? WHAT IS THE STANDARD SAID THAT THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO BE LEARNING IN THE SCHOOL YEAR.

I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT COMMENT.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT IS WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS ALL ABOUT.

I JUST WANT TO ECHO THE THANKS AND APPRECIATION.

THOSE WERE MY QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS.

REALLY PHENOMENAL JOB.

I AM CERTAINLY EXCITED TO SIGN MY SON UP FOR IT.

WE WILL BE PARTICIPATING.

VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

>> THANKS.

MARGARET LORBER HAD ANOTHER FOLLOW-UP.

>> IT WILL BE QUICK.

IT BUILDS A LITTLE BIT ON WHAT VERONICA NOLAN WAS SAYING ON GETTING THE WORD OUT.

WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR GETTING THE WORD OUT ABOUT THE SUMMER PROGRAM TO THE NON- ENGLISH SPEAKING FAMILIES? PARTICULARLY, FAMILIES DO NOT HAVE GOOD ACCESS TO INTERNET? THEY CAN'T READ THE FAQS.

HOW ARE WE GETTING THE WORD OUT TO THOSE FAMILIES?

[01:05:02]

>> THAT IS A QUESTION THAT WE ACTUALLY DISCUSSED WITH OUR ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS THIS WEEK.

MARGARET LORBER WE ARE GOING TO WORK WITH COMMUNICATIONS ON FIGURING OUT WHETHER THAT IS LETTERS, HOME USING THE SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS ON THOSE TYPES OF VENUES.

YES, WE KNOW WE NEED TO DO MORE OUTREACH TO MAKE SURE THAT FAMILIES UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE OFFERING THIS.

ALSO UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU MAY END UP GETTING A KIT SOMETIME AROUND JULY 1.

ONE THING I DID NOT SAY, UM, DURING THE PRESENTATION.

WE ARE MAILING KITS TO THE TEACHERS WHO WILL BE TEACHING SUMMER SCHOOL.

THEY WILL HAVE THAT AT HOME.

SO WE DON'T HAVE THE UM WORRY OR WONDER.

THE KIT -- THEY WILL ACTUALLY HAVE A STUDENT KITS AT HOME.

IF THEY ARE DOING A ZOOM LESSON THEY WILL ALSO HAVE THAT THERE.

WE WILL BE CIRCLING BACK TO COMMUNICATIONS AND DEVELOPING UM THE NEXT LAYER OF COMMUNICATION TO OUR FAMILIES, BE ON THE WEBSITE.

>> OKAY.

NEXT WE HAVE DR. RIEF WITH ANOTHER QUESTION.

>> I JUST UM HAD A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS AROUND THE CURRICULUM AND TEACHING UM THAT I WAS HOPING TO BE CLARIFIED.

DURING YOUR PRESENTATION, THAT VIDEO YOU SHOWED.

I DID REVIEW BEFORE HAND.

I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY GREAT.

IT WAS COMING ACROSS GLORY AND THE PRESENTATION.

IF THERE IS A WAY TO SHOW THAT OUT, MAYBE THROUGH THE ACPS EXPRESS, I THINK THAT WOULD BE A SHARE WITH PARENTS.

I JUST WANT TO SEE IF I'M UNDERSTANDING CORRECTLY UM.

I WANTED TO ADD THAT THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PLAN I THOUGHT WAS REALLY GOOD.

IT WAS FAIRLY -- VERY CLEARLY PRESENTED.

UM, IF I'M UNDERSTANDING CORRECTLY, THE K-M2 PROGRAMMING WITH THE ZOOM LESSONS IS GOING TO BE TAUGHT ON THE PLATFORM OF CAMPUS AND IT WILL BE -- THE TEACHERS WILL BE A CPS STAFF AND THEY WILL BE WORKING TWO HOURS A DAY FOR A TOTAL OF EIGHT HOURS A WEEK.

THE BOOST CLASSES THAT WILL BE OFFERED FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE THROUGH AN ONLINE PROVIDER WHICH IS INGENUITY, THAT WILL NOT BE TAUGHT BY ACPS THAT WILL BE TAUGHT BY THE INGENUITY PEOPLE THAT WE CONTRACT WITH.

AND THEN THERE IS ALSO GOING TO BE THE NEW CREDIT AND CREDIT RECOVERY COURSES WHICH ARE GOING TO BE TAUGHT BY ACPS EMPLOYEES AND THEY WILL BE WORKING FOUR HOURS A DAY TO DO THAT? AND THEN WE ARE ALSO GOING TO HAVE SUPPORT FROM SPECIAL EDUCATION TO HELP TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS FOR ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS. FIRST, DID I GET IT RIGHT? AND THEN SECONDLY, ARE YOU UM, THE ACPS EMPLOYEES WHO ARE WORKING ON THESE PROGRAMS THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THEIR NORMAL CONTRACT.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO DO THIS ADDITIONAL TEACHING, IN THE SUMMER, IS THAT CORRECT?

>> ES.

PRE-K THROUGH SECOND GRADE WILL ACTUALLY ACCESS EVERYTHING THEY NEED THROUGH CLEVER.

WE DON'T HAVE A CLEVER VIDEO FOR YOU.

WE ACTUALLY MET THIS MORNING WITH 18 PEOPLE ON THE CALL FROM DIFFERENT OFFICES AND SPECIALIST AND OUR TECHNOLOGY TEAM AND MR. SAMPSON.

TO AGAIN, AS I SAID, ONE-STOP SHOPPING.

THE STUDENT WOULD GO INTO CLEVER AT PRE-K THROUGH SECOND GRADE, AND ACTUALLY THEY MAY NOT, BUT THEIR PARENT MAY ACTUALLY.

PART OF THE REASON WE WENT WITH CLEVER AT THE YOUNGER GRADES, WE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR, OVER THE LAST NINE WEEKS HOW FAMILIES ARE SAYING, WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A CHROME BOOK AND PRE-K, BECAUSE WE DON'T GIVE YOU ONE.

YOU CAN ACCESS CONTENT ON CLEVER VIA PHONE.

WE FELT THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU ARE AT THE YOUNGER GRADES THAT YOU CAN ACCESS OUR CONTENT, SO YOU CAN GET INTO CLEVER AND CLICKED ON MS. SMITH'S CLASS.

EACH TEACHER DURING OUR JUNE 23-24 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY WILL ACTUALLY DEVELOP THEIR TEACHER CLEVER PAGE WHERE THE STUDENT DOESN'T HAVE TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE, THEY CAN CLICK ON THE RESUME, JUST LIKE THE CAMPUS VIDEO.

THAT IS OUR PRE-K THROUGH SECOND GRADE.

FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE IT IS CAMPUS.

CLEVER FOR THE YOUNGEST STUDENTS, CANVAS FOR 3RD-4TH GRADE.

EVERYONE WILL STILL ACCESS EVERYTHING THROUGH CLEVER.

IT IS THE WAREHOUSE WE CAN GO IN AND ALL OF THE LINKS ARE THERE AND YOU CAN CLICK ON WHAT YOU NEED.

I WENT IN FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY AND I WAS AMAZED AT ALL OF THE TOOLS THAT ACPS OFFERS.

BOOST COURSES WILL BE TAUGHT BY ACPS STAFF.

CREDIT RECOVERY AND CREDIT COURSES WILL BE TAUGHT BY ACPS STAFF.

WORKING WITH DOCTOR EVERSON.

[01:10:01]

IF WE USED INGENUITY, OUR CHARGE FOR A CLASS I THINK WOULD BE 500 PLUS DOLLARS.

IT IS BETTER FOR US TO PAY ACPS STAFF.

THERE ARE TIMES WHERE WE NEED TO USE INGENUITY TEACHERS.

OUR PLAN IS TO HIRE ACPS TEACHERS WHO APPLIED THIS WEEK.

WE SHOULD BE GETTING A LIST OF EVERYONE WHO APPLIED TODAY, FROM HUMAN RESOURCES.

WE KNOW IT IS A HEAVY LIFT.

AGAIN, THIS IS AN ADDITIONAL 8 HOURS IF YOU ARE PRE-K THROUGH FOURTH GRADE.

IF YOU ARE DOING BOOST, THAT IS FOUR DAYS A WEEK, EIGHT HOURS A WEEK.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GIVE TEACHERS A BREAK BUT MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE.

IF YOU ARE DOING NEW CREDIT OR CREDIT RECOVERY, YOU ARE WORKING A FOUR HOUR DAY.

IF YOU ARE AN SS TEAM MEMBER WE ARE ASKING YOU TO WORK A FOUR HOUR DAY.

I MAY HAVE MY FACTS WRONG THERE.

THE REASON WE ASK OUR SST STAFF IS WE DON'T WANT THEM TO MISS A ZOOM LESSON.

IF THERE ARE IN CRISIS, PLEASE MISS A ZOOM LESSON.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE OUR PROFESSIONALS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS AFTER CLASS, BEFORE CLASS.

IF YOU ARE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, 9-1 I THINK THE TEACHERS MAY BE WORKING.

FROM 1-2:00 P.M.

YOU WILL HAVE AVAILABLE.

AS WE KEEP SAYING, BEING FLEXIBLE.

AS I SAID, I AM EXCITED WITH MR. SAMPSON AND SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION, TO BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY HIGHER, WE HOPE, A LOT OF SST SUPPORT FOR OUR FAMILIES AND STUDENTS THIS SUMMER.

>> I GUESS, JUST ONE QUICK COMMENT.

YOU KNOW,, THINKING THROUGH THE PLAN UM THAT YOU LAID OUT, JUST UM MY FIRST GRADER IS UM DOING HIS LESSONS ON SEESAW WHICH ARE UPLOADED TO CLEVER.

UM, BUT, YEAH, I'M THINKING ABOUT PARENTS WHO ARE ON A DIFFERENT UM PLATFORM RIGHT NOW, LIKE SWITCHING.

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO KNOW HOW TO DO THAT? NORMALLY, A NEW SCHOOL YEAR STARTS, THERE IS PROCESS FOR WALKING PARENTS THROUGH THAT, YOU KNOW? WHATEVER.

OR, THERE IS THE MAIL THAT COMES ON.

AGAIN, I AM THINKING THAT SOME PARENTS ARE GOING TO BE STRUGGLING TO FIGURE OUT, IT IS THE FIRST DAY, WHERE MY SUPPOSED TO GO? JUST UM, SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

>> TO YOUR POINT, WE HAVE ALSO BEEN HAVING DISCUSSIONS ON EXACTLY THAT.

SO, OUR SECONDARY MATH SPECIALIST IS THE ONE THAT CREATED THE CANVAS VIDEO AND THE TEACHER PAGES FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE.

IF WE THINK ABOUT, AS DOCTOR HUTCHINS USES VIDEO FOR HIS MESSAGES.

IF WE CREATE, TO YOUR POINT, A PRE-K AND THIS IS HOW YOU CAN DO THAT, AND ALSO IN THE ACTUAL CODES IF FOR FAMILIES IF THEY NEED TO SCAN.

WE ARE TRYING TO TAKE SOME OF THE LESSONS LEARNED AND SEE IF WE CAN FIND SOLUTIONS AHEAD OF TIME.

WE KNOW WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO BEFORE JULY 6.

BUT, WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR OUR FAMILIES TO ACCESS THE CONTENT.

>> OKAY.

THANK YOU.

I AM AWARE WE HAVE GONE A LITTLE LONG TODAY.

I HAVE ONE MORE HAND RACE WHICH IS VERONICA NOLAN.

IF PEOPLE HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS WE CAN PUT THEM IN E-MAIL AND HAVE EVERYBODY GET THE RESPONSE.

>> I APOLOGIZE FOR PROLONGING THE MEETING.

JUST A QUICK QUESTION, DOCTOR MANN.

I KNOW WE HAVE MADE A LOT OF PROGRESS AT ACPS WITH PROJECT -BASED LEARNING.

I KNOW THAT WAS ONE OF THE MENTIONS OF THAT PANEL THAT DOCTOR HUTCHINS BROUGHT TO ACPS THAT THEY THOUGHT NOT ONLY HAD WE REALLY PROGRESSED, IT'S AN AREA WE WANT TO CONTINUE GROWING.

I IMAGINE THAT IS CHALLENGING IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT.

I WANTED TO GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO JUST TO SHARE WHERE WE ARE WITHOUT.

JUST TO MAKE SURE ALL SO WE ARE NOT LOSING ANY PROGRESS WHEN WE COME BACK TO BRICK-AND-MORTAR AT SOME POINT AS WELL.

>> THANK YOU.

I DON'T KNOW IF SARAH WHELAN, OUR SOCIAL STUDIES SPECIALIST IS WATCHING.

THE INQUIRY PROJECT IS ACTUALLY A MODIFIED PBO.

S ARE NOT PBO.

WE WANTED TO FIGURE OUT A WAY CANVAS GAVE US A PLATFORM.

ONE OF THE THINGS, THEY DEVELOP THE PROGRAM, AND I THINK IT WAS A MOMENT IN OUR HISTORY TO THINK ABOUT NOW WHAT A STUDENT IS GOING THROUGH AT HOME IN THE WORLD FROM BLACK LIVES MATTER, TO COVID-19 AND EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN THAT THIS IS A WAY FOR THEM TO ACTUALLY UM COLLABORATE AND AS MS. WARNER SAID EARLIER, THE BREAKOUT ROOMS AS WE DEVELOP SOME OF THESE.

[01:15:02]

BUT ALSO, WHEN WE COME BACK IN AUGUST, AUGUST OR SEPTEMBER, WHENEVER WE ACTUALLY SEE EACH OTHER FACE-TO-FACE, IF WE DO THAT.

WE CAN REPORT OUT ON THE STUDENT SHOWCASE AND SHOW THE SCHOOL BOARD AND COMMUNITY UM SOME OF THE ARTIFACTS THAT THE STUDENTS CREATED.

THERE IS A WAY FOR STUDENTS TO TURN IN SOME OF THEIR WORK IN CANVAS.

WE MODIFIED A PBO THAT WE WOULD NORMALLY HAVE DURING OUR SUMMER PROGRAM.

IT IS A DIFFERENT WAY UM TO WEAVE IN PBO FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS.

CANVAS GAVE US THAT VEHICLE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT.

>> FANTASTIC.

ACTUALLY, MY SON, FOR HIS SOCIAL STUDIES FOR CIVIL RIGHTS UNIT JUST DID A PODCAST.

IT'S PHENOMENAL WITH THE TEACHERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COME UP WITH.

THANK YOU.

>> YOU ARE WELCOME.

>> SUPER.

OKAY.

THANK YOU EVERYBODY.

THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO.

YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION.

I THINK IT IS REALLY EXCITING.

WHEN I GO TO BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, NOW I FEEL LIKE I WANTED TO TUNE INTO SUMMER SCHOOL THIS YEAR.

UM, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THAT WORK.

IF PEOPLE HAVE MORE QUESTIONS, SEND THEM ON.

THE RESPONSES CAN BE SHARED OUT TO THE BOARD AND MAY BE INCORPORATED AS FAQS AS

[Item 12]

WELL.

NEXT UP IS THE CHAIR'S REPORT.

WE ARE MOVING ALONG.

I'M GOING TO HAVE THE CLERK ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT A RESOLUTION AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE THAT WE REAFFIRMED LAST YEAR, AT THIS TIME, TO SUPPORT MEASURES TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF GUNS AND ELIMINATE GUN VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

ALL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS ARE WEARING ORANGE.

I SEE DOCTOR HUTCHINS PUT ON HIS ORANGE HAT.

TODAY IS THE FIRST FRIDAY, IN JUNE, IT IS NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY.

ALSO, WEARING ORANGE WEEKEND IS ONE TO BE HELD VIRTUALLY THIS YEAR IS FROM JUNE 5-JUNE 7.

ORANGE HAS BEEN THE DEFINING COLOR OF THE GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION MOVEMENT WHETHER IT IS ONE BY STUDENTS, ACTIVIST OR LOVED ONES.

THE COLOR ORANGE HONORS THE LIVES CUT SHORT AND THE HUNDREDS MORE WOUNDED BY GUN VIOLENCE EVERY DAY.

FIREARMS REMAINS A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR AMERICAN CHILDREN AND TEENS.

THE BEAST MIGHT PROGRAM FOR GUN SAFETY, ENCOURAGES ACPS FAMILIES TO TAKE FIVE SIMPLE STEPS.

SECURE, MODEL, ASK, RECOGNIZE AND TELL.

T RESPONSIBLE ACTIONS AT HOME THAT WILL PREVENT CHILD GUN DEATHS AND INJURIES.

I HAVE ACTUALLY UM ATTENDED ONE OF THESE.

IT IS REALLY PHENOMENAL.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION, IT IS ACTUALLY POSTED UNDER THE PUBLIC COMMENTS SECTION OF THE AGENDA TODAY.

AGAIN, WHERE ORANGE WEEKEND IS THIS WEEKEND.

CHECK IT OUT TO SEE HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED IN.

THAT IS REALLY IT FOR MY REPORT TO.

[Items 13 & 15]

NOW ONTO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

>> THE ONLY REPORT THAT I HAVE IS JUST THAT WE HAVE TO GET READY FOR NEXT WEEK EVERYBODY.

GRADUATION.

OUR FIRST VIRTUAL GRADUATION IN THE HISTORY OF ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

I KNOW OUR SENIORS ARE A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE IN PERSON, WE ARE GOING TO MAKE THIS REALLY COOL EVENT.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO JUST REPRESENTING, AND ACKNOWLEDGING ALL OF OUR SENIOR GRADUATES.

THEY HAVE WORKED SO HARD.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS GLOBAL PANDEMIC HAS FORCED OUR WORLDS TO TURN UPSIDE DOWN.

THEY HAVE A VERY NONTRADITIONAL GRADUATION CEREBRATION.

ONE THING I KEEP TELLING ALL OF THE SENIORS THAT I GET TO TALK TO, GUESS WHAT? YOU ALL MADE HISTORY.

YOU HAVE THE STORY TO SHARE FOR MANY GENERATIONS TO COME.

EVERYONE IN THE FUTURE IS GOING TO WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING THAT YOUR? YOU KNOW WHAT, I HAD TO GRADUATE ONLINE AND VIRTUALLY.

THAT IS SOMETHING THEY WILL APPRECIATE IN THE YEARS FROM NOW.

NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR.

THAT IS ALL I WANTED TO SAY FOR MY UPDATE TODAY.

>> THANK YOU.

NOW, WE ARE ONTO GETTING A MOTION TO ADJOURN.

>> CAN WE JUST MENTIONED THAT WE ALSO HAVE THE PUBLIC HEARING ON OUR PLAN NEXT TUESDAY AT 12:30 P.M.

AND 7:00 P.M.

I REALLY WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE PUBLIC TO PLEASE PARTICIPATE.

I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT BLACK LIVES MATTER AND ANTIRACIST POLICIES IN OUR SCHOOLS.

THAT IS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE TO COME AND SPEAK UP.

>> THANK YOU.

I LOSE TRACK OF THE DAY.

I HAD TO LOOK AT MY PAPER TO SEE IS THE FIFTH WHEN WE STARTED THE MEETING.

NEXT WEEK IS VERY CLOSE.

PEOPLE, PLEASE SIGN UP.

HE DID HAVE ONE PUBLIC COMMENT TODAY ABOUT OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MORE INPUT.

YES, WE HAVE TRIED TO MAKE IT AS FLEXIBLE AS POSSIBLE BY HAVING TWO AT DIFFERENT TIMES ON THAT DATE.

THANK YOU.

ALL RIGHT.

ANYONE WANTING TO GIVE A MOTION TO ADJOURN?

>> MADAM CHAIR, I MOVE THAT WE ADJOURN.

[01:21:37]

>> SECOND.

>> WE CAN KEEP GOING IF YOU WANT.

I DON'T WANT TO END THE MEETING IF YOU WANT TO.

I WILL DO A ROLL CALL VOTE.

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.

HAVE A NICE WEEKEND.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
