SO HOPEFULLY IT'S GETTING PROCESSED AND WE CAN START THE WORK ON GETTING CURRICULUM REVISION, UM, GOING.

I DO THINK IT'S GOING TO KIND OF HALT.

MY HOPE IS THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROVED EARLIER.

I REQUESTED IT IN JANUARY AND IT'S JUST TAKEN A LONG TIME TO GET APPROVAL.

SO I'M IT'S LOOKING UNLIKELY WE'LL BE ABLE TO ROLL IT OUT NEXT YEAR, BUT WE MAY BE ABLE TO DO A CROSSWALK KIND OF YEAR WITH THE OLD CURRICULUM THAT'S APPROVED AS THE NEW LESSONS GET APPROVED BY THE SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY BOARD AND THEN THE SCHOOL BOARD, WE CAN HOPEFULLY DO A CROSSWALK YEAR NEXT YEAR.

AND SO I HAVE A REALLY QUICK UPDATE ON THE STUDENT SELF-ADVOCACY COMMITTEE, WHICH IS THAT WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH A COUPLE OF STUDENTS WHO WERE INTERESTED AND DID HAVE ONE MEETING.

JUST KIND OF GETTING A SENSE OF WHAT SORT OF THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE SORT OF OVERALL STUDENT BODY SORT OF NEEDS IN TERMS OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ARE AND JUST SORT OF THEIR WILLINGNESS TO BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROCESS OF JUST GETTING MORE DATA, YOU KNOW, FROM THE STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE. AND SO I'M HOPEFUL THAT WE'LL BE ABLE TO CHECK IN ONE MORE TIME BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

BUT REALISTICALLY, WE'RE PROBABLY NOT GOING TO GET ANYTHING OFF THE GROUND UNTIL SOMETIME NEXT YEAR.

BUT REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE PROGRESS.

CONGRATULATIONS. YES, IT'S I THINK IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE I IT ACTUALLY WAS A STUDENT WHO HAD EMAILED ASKING ABOUT STUDENT MEMBERSHIP IN ON THE COMMITTEE.

AND SO I SAID, WELL, THERE'S THIS WHOLE PROCESS FOR JOINING THE COMMITTEE.

HOWEVER, WE ALSO HAVE THIS SUBCOMMITTEE THAT WE'RE PUTTING TOGETHER, IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED.

THERE ARE FEWER HOOPS TO JUMP THROUGH.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, THE REST IS HISTORY.

SO JUST IN TERMS OF JUST THE NEXT COUPLE ITEMS, THE IDEAS OF UPDATES ON CURRENT AND PROPOSED METHODS FOR DATA DRIVEN DECISION MAKING AND STRATEGIES FOR PROMOTING STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES TO FAMILIES.

AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAD TOUCHED ON NOT LAST MONTH'S MEETING BUT THE MONTH BEFORE, TO JUST LOOK AT OUR CURRENT METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA, USING REPORTING BY TEACHERS, USING SOME OF THE SORT OF THE THE SEAL METHOD METHODS OR STRATEGIES, AND JUST REALLY BEING ABLE TO FORMULATE A PROCESS FOR IDENTIFYING HOW CONSISTENTLY WE'RE GETTING DATA AND HOW RELIABLE THE DATA IS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT'S MAYBE BEING REPORTED BY TEACHERS VERSUS THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES.

AND I KNOW ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAD TOUCHED ON WAS THIS IDEA OF, YOU KNOW, REALLY WANTING TO IDENTIFY WHAT'S WORKING AND WHAT WE CAN KEEP DOING MORE OF AND WHAT WE MAYBE WANT TO CHANGE BASED ON THE FEEDBACK THAT WE'RE GETTING.

AND I KNOW ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE KIND OF LEFT OFF OF OF OF THAT WAS JUST SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WITH EITHER BUY IN OR CONSISTENCY.

AND I KNOW SHE WAS NOT HERE, BUT I KNOW THAT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAD TOUCHED ON WITH THAT WAS THIS IDEA OF MAYBE JUST CONNECTING

WITH TEACHERS WHO ARE BOUGHT IN AND BEING ABLE TO GET MORE OF A SENSE FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT'S WORKING AND WHAT'S SUSTAINABLE IN TERMS OF DATA COLLECTION.

SO JUST WANTED TO KIND OF SORT OF THROW THAT OUT THERE TO SEE IF WE HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

SO I THINK THERE AREN'T VERY MANY PEOPLE ON THIS CALL THAT COULD ANSWER THAT QUESTION.

DIFFERENT DATA POINTS THAT COME OFF OF THAT.

SOME OF THE INFORMATION FROM THAT THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT.

I WAS JUST IN A MEETING TODAY WHERE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT LIKE STAFFING AND HOW WE'RE DETERMINING IF AN ADDITIONAL OF A SCHOOL NEEDS AN ADDITIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

SO THERE'S THERE'S A THERE'S A LOT OF DATA THAT WE HAVE.

I THINK IT'S JUST MAKING THE DETERMINATIONS AND THEN BEING ABLE TO THEN DISTRIBUTE THE RESOURCES PROPERLY AND ACCORDINGLY, I THINK, TO FOLKS IN A TIMELY MANNER.

I THINK THAT'S WHERE WE STILL ARE RIGHT NOW IS JUST KIND OF FIGURING THIS.

UM, AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I KNOW THAT WE HAD TALKED ALSO SORT OF BRIEFLY ON WAS WHAT, WHAT WE COULD DO MORE OF IN TERMS OF COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.

AND, AND SO AGAIN, WANTED TO GET ANY ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS SINCE THAT CONVERSATION.

SO I DO A LOT WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.

AND SO WE'RE LOOKING AT A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT AVENUES TO CONNECT.

UM, WE CURRENTLY GOT LIKE THE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD, SOME MEMBERS IN THAT PROVIDING DIRECT SERVICE TO STUDENTS IN SCHOOLS.

UM, THERE'S A COUPLE OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND OF COURSE I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAMES OF THEM RIGHT NOW THAT WE'RE ALSO WORKING WITH, BUT, BUT SHOWING THEM UP FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR AND THEN ALSO FOR NEXT YEAR AND MAKING SURE THAT GOING BACK TO THE PREVIOUS POINT, THAT WHEN WE'RE HAVING THESE FOLKS IN SCHOOLS, IT'S BECAUSE WE'VE WE'RE NOTICING NEED, SO TO SPEAK. UM, THIS OTHER PART ABOUT PROMOTING STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES, IF YOU GET A CHANCE IF YOU GO TO THE FAIRFAX COUNTY WEB PAGE FOR FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOLS WEB PAGE, THEY HAVE A REALLY GOOD PAGE ON MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES.

AND I'VE STARTED TO WORK WITH, I BELIEVE HIS NAME IS KEVIN MORRIS AND COMMUNICATIONS ON CREATING SOMETHING LIKE THAT FOR US.

UM, THAT WE WANT TO POTENTIALLY ROLL OUT FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

UM, I ALSO DID SOME WORK WHEN I WAS AT THE DETENTION CENTER WHERE WE HAD COMMUNITY RESOURCES.

AND SO WE'VE ALSO DONE SOME WORK AROUND THAT.

AND ONE OF OUR SOCIAL WORK INTERNS HAS COLLECTED A NUMBER OF.

JUST RESOURCES IN ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF CATEGORIES, WHETHER IT BE FROM HOUSING TO MENTAL HEALTH TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE TO FOOD, CLOTHING, THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.

AND WE ALSO WANT TO TRY TO GET THAT INFORMATION OUT ON THE WEBSITE AND THEN ALSO LINKED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL'S WEBSITE.

SO THAT'S JUST SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW.

AND IN ADDITION, I HAVE BEEN REACHING OUT TRYING TO FIND TELEHEALTH SERVICES FOR STUDENTS SPECIFICALLY AND ALSO FOR STAFF AND HAVE A MEETING COMING UP.

I BELIEVE IT'S NEXT WEEK.

UM. THEY CAN'T BE NEXT.

SOON WITH AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY, ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS WON'T SAY THERAPY.

UM, THE OTHER THING I WOULD SAY IS, YOU KNOW, I HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO'S IN 10TH GRADE AND SHE TELLS ME THAT SHE HAS ONE TEACHER WHO'S TOTAL BUY IN TO SEAL AND ANOTHER TEACHER WHO SAYS DON'T DO TOUCHY FEELY.

I TEACH THE SUBJECT.

I TEACH YOU ALL CAN LIKE, DEAL WITH THAT.

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

LIKE, I'LL TELL YOU, WE HAVE INFORMATION, BUT I'M NOT DOING THESE LESSONS.

AND SO FOR ME, I'M THINKING, WHY ARE WE ASKING TEACHERS WHO ARE TRAINED IN MATH AND SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, WHATEVER SPANISH TO TEACH A SEAL LESSON? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT AT ALL.

I'M A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL, AND YET I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY WE ARE ASKING PEOPLE WHO ARE TRAINED IN A SUBJECT WHO ARE EDUCATORS TO DO MENTAL HEALTH WORK.

UM. SO HAVING SAID THAT, I MEAN, I JUST FEEL LIKE, UM.

YOU KNOW, AS A PARENT, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO THE KIDS OUT THERE.

AND YET, I DON'T KNOW.

SO HOW DO YOU DO THAT? IS IT BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT? IS IT EMAILS? IS IT FACE? I DON'T KNOW. BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW.

I'M A PRETTY CLUED IN PARENT AND YET I HAVE NO IDEA.

I WOULD ACTUALLY LIKE TO I'D LIKE TO SECOND THE POINT ABOUT TEACHERS NOT BEING MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.

THE FIRST THREE QUARTERS BEFORE WE CHANGED THE PRIDE SCHEDULE, I HAD TWO TEACHERS WHO WERE FAIRLY BOUGHT IN TO PRIDE AND THEY WERE DOING THE LESSONS AND THEY WERE TRYING TO GET STUDENTS ENGAGED.

THEY WERE HONESTLY DOING THEIR LEVEL BEST, BUT THEY COULDN'T GET STUDENTS TO ENGAGE, AND IT WAS EXTREMELY NONPRODUCTIVE.

AND NOW I HAVE TWO TEACHERS WHO JUST WON'T EVEN TOUCH THE LESSONS WHATSOEVER.

I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THE.

I FAIL TO SEE IF SEAL IS ACTUALLY A SEAL AND PRIDE IS ACTUALLY HITTING THE TARGETS THAT I KNOW IT'S INTENDED TO.

AND SO GIVEN THAT CIRCUMSTANCE, I AM KIND OF CURIOUS WHAT THE BENEFIT IS.

AND THOSE ARE TWO REALLY, REALLY GREAT POINTS.

AND ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE'RE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION IS SO THAT WE CAN IDENTIFY THE METHODS AND THE STRATEGIES THAT WE'RE IMPLEMENTING THAT ARE EFFECTIVE AND THOSE THAT ARE NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS WE'D LIKE FOR THEM TO BE.

AND I THINK WE ALL WOULD AGREE THAT THE PURPOSE OF ALL OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES ARE TO SUPPORT STUDENTS.

AND AS WE GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF COLLECTING AND SORT OF BETTER UNDERSTANDING OUR DATA, WE'LL BE IN A POSITION TO AGAIN DO MORE OF THE THINGS THAT ARE EFFECTIVE AND DO LESS OR SWITCH UP THE THINGS THAT ARE NOT EFFECTIVE.

SO THE WE HAVE A COLLABORATION WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH FQHC HERE IN ALEXANDRIA, AND THEY ARE CURRENTLY WRITING A HRSA GRANT THAT WOULD FUND SCHOOL BASED HEALTH SERVICES IN SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS.

SO AND ONE ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN THIS GRANT IS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

SO I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE POTENTIAL OF EXPANDING SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CARE.

SO MORE, MORE WILL BE COMING ON THAT IN THE FUTURE.

I HOPE THAT IS VERY EXCITING.

AND THEY ARE JUST IN THE PROCESS OF ROLLING IT OUT.

AND I BELIEVE THEY HAVE ABOUT 300 STUDENTS SIGNED UP RIGHT NOW.

SO I DON'T KNOW.

IT IS VERY INTENTIONAL.

EVERYTHING WE DO AROUND WELL-BEING AND MENTAL HEALTH BECAUSE OF OF WHAT I'VE LEARNED AND OBSERVED AND THE WORK I'VE DONE FOR 30 PLUS YEARS. SO THE FIRST TEN YEARS OF MY CAREER, I WORKED WITH PEOPLE THAT WERE PARENTS AND EDUCATORS.

I WORKED WITH SCHOOL SYSTEMS. MY OFFICE WAS IN MCLEAN, VIRGINIA, SO I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH FAIRFAX COUNTY.

I WORKED ON THE MOBILE CRISIS UNIT AND WORKED WITH EVERYTHING FROM PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY AND ADULTS AS WELL.

AND THEN 9/11 HAPPENED, AND MANY OF THE FAMILIES THAT I KNEW AND CARED ABOUT WORKED WITH WERE PENTAGON FAMILIES.

AND SO IT TOUCHED VERY CLOSE TO HOME.

AND SO ALSO MY FATHER IS A VETERAN FROM WORLD WAR TWO, AND I KNEW THAT WE WERE GOING TO WAR.

AND I KNEW THAT THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE COMING BACK WITH TRAUMA AND AND THAT WE WERE GOING TO NEED TO DO MORE TO PROVIDE CARE AND SUPPORT.

SO I HAD TWO LITTLE GIRLS AT THE TIME.

WE DROVE TO BARNES AND NOBLE.

I READ NONPROFITS FOR DUMMIES BECAUSE I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT STARTING A NONPROFIT, BUT I BUILT GIVE AN HOUR, WHICH IS A NATIONAL AND A NONPROFIT HERE IN THE US, BUT WE'VE ALSO DONE INTERNATIONAL WORK.

I RAN GIVE AN HOUR FOR 15 YEARS AND GIVE AN HOUR.

THE CONCEPT BEHIND GIVE AN HOUR REALLY LAUNCHED ME INTO THE WORK THAT YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR ABOUT NOW, WHICH REALLY WAS ABOUT EXTENDING AND I HEARD MENTION OF IT ON THIS, THIS ZOOM ACCESS TO CARE, IDENTIFYING PROVIDERS, GETTING THEM TO TO GIVE THEIR SERVICES, PROVIDE SERVICES EVEN WE CAN PAY FOR THEM.

IT'S HARD TO GET THEM. SO THAT ORGANIZATION GIVE AN HOUR LED ME TO WORK WITH THE WHITE HOUSE.

I WORKED WITH THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

I WORKED WITH VERY CLOSELY WITH THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION, WITH MICHELLE OBAMA AND DR.

BIDEN. WE LAUNCHED A PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN FOCUSED ON EDUCATING EVERYBODY ABOUT THE SIGNS OF EMOTIONAL SUFFERING, CALLED THE CAMPAIGN TO CHANGE DIRECTION.

I WAS NAMED A TIME 100 BECAUSE OF THAT WORK.

ALL OF THAT WORK DURING THAT TIME, WHICH WAS AMAZING, GAVE ME A BIGGER PLATFORM TO WORK WITH MORE FOLKS TO DO THIS WORK THAT WE'RE ALL TALKING ABOUT.

AND AND THEN I WAS ASKED TO GO INTO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, WHICH IS WHERE I MET MY COO AND CO-FOUNDER, MICHAEL MCKINLEY, AND I WAS ASKED TO GO INTO THE GOVERNMENT TO LEAD THE PROVINCE EFFORT, WHICH WAS A PRESIDENTIAL TASK FORCE FOCUSED ON CREATING THE FIRST EVER ALL OF NATION, ALL OF OF GOVERNMENT EFFORT FOCUSED ON SUICIDE PREVENTION.

SO I'VE HAD A LONG HISTORY OF LOOKING AT THIS, THIS MENTAL HEALTH SPACE.

AND AND HERE'S SORT OF WHERE I HAVE LANDED, IF YOU WILL, THINGS THAT YOU MANY OF YOU KNOW AND HAVE DONE THIS WORK AS WELL, THAT, YOU KNOW, WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO TO REMOVE STIGMA.

WE'VE MADE PROGRESS, BUT WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.

WE HAVE WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT BASIC MENTAL HEALTH LITERACY.

WE KNOW MORE ABOUT TAKING CARE OF OUR TEETH, WHICH IS IMPORTANT THAN WE DO TAKING CARE OF OUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.

AND AND AS YOU'LL SEE IN MICHAEL'S GOING TO PULL UP OUR SLIDES IF WE CAN SHARE, SO WE CAN GIVE YOU SORT OF A TOUR OF WHAT WE KNOW.

SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW THESE THINGS, SOME OF YOU MAY NOT, BUT WE ARE SEEING A REALLY A WORSENING GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS THAT IS DEVASTATING COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE. IT'S NOT JUST AFFECTING US.

MILLIONS ARE LOSING HOPE AND ENGAGING IN VERY UNHEALTHY AND DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIORS.

SUICIDE IS INCREASING, ESPECIALLY AMONG OUR MOST VULNERABLE, INCLUDING OUR KIDS.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE HAS RISEN OVER 20% IN THE LAST DECADE WITH AND KNOW NO SIGN THAT WE'RE GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION ANYTIME SOON.

NEXT SLIDE. THE CHALLENGE.

AND AGAIN, YOU'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT, AND WE BELIEVE THAT WE'VE IDENTIFIED HOW TO HELP FILL THIS GAP AND MAKE SURE THAT WHEN SOMEBODY WHO IS REALLY IN NEED CAN FIND ACCESS TO SOMEBODY LIKE ME THERE, IT'D BE GREAT IF WE HAD MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FOR EVERYBODY.

BUT THERE ARE NEVER GOING TO BE ENOUGH MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO MEET THE NEED.

HERE'S JUST JUST ONE LITTLE DATA POINT.

SO ONE OUT OF FIVE AMERICANS HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION, WHETHER DIAGNOSED OR NOT.

IT IS A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION AND THEY'RE FUNCTIONING, BUT THEY MAY BE STRUGGLING.

SO THAT'S ABOUT 60 MILLION AMERICANS.

THERE ARE ABOUT 500,000.

IF YOU ADD ALL OF US UP, ALL THE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY, THERE ARE ABOUT 500,000 OF US.

THE MATH DOES NOT ADD UP, 500,000 TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF 60 MILLION.

AND IT'S GETTING WORSE AGAIN, NOT BETTER.

NEXT SLIDE. AS I SAID, 1 IN 5 PEOPLE HAVE STRUGGLES BUT CAN'T NECESSARILY GET HELP.

AND DESPITE EFFECTIVE TREATMENT, THERE ARE LONG DELAYS BETWEEN THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF SYMPTOMS AND WHEN PEOPLE GET HELP.

AND THAT ALSO IS PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT IF WE CAN GET TO YOUNG PEOPLE EARLY, THEN WE'RE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO TURN IT AROUND, GIVE THEM TOOLS, GIVE THEM STRATEGIES SO THAT IT DOESN'T BECOME A CHRONIC CONDITION.

MOST OF FAMILIES LACK ACCESS.

OOPS, GO BACK. LACK ACCESS TO ADEQUATE MENTAL HEALTH CARE.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS AFFECT MORE THAN 20 MILLION AMERICANS AGES 12 AND OVER, AND COVID HAS ONLY MADE EVERYTHING WORSE.

THE ONE GOOD THING THAT COVID DID, IT REALLY IT DIDN'T DO IT.

BUT US ALL BEING TOGETHER IN THAT EXPERIENCE, IT'S THE ONLY TIME IN OUR LIFETIME THAT WE ALL EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGE AT ONCE.

EVERYONE ON THE PLANET EXPERIENCED INTENSE ANXIETY.

FOR SOME OF US, IT BECAME DEBILITATING.

OTHERS EXPERIENCED DEPRESSION THAT LASTED BEYOND THE THE THE THROES OF THE PANDEMIC.

BUT BUT BASICALLY IT JUST MADE EVERYTHING WORSE.

WORSE. NEXT SLIDE.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH.

AGAIN, THIS IS WHAT WE'RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT.

SUICIDE IS NOW THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH, WHICH IS AS A PARENT OF TWO YOUNG WOMEN, THIS IS TERRIFYING, TRAGIC, DISTRESSING, SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 15 TO 24.

1 IN 6 CHILDREN AGED 2 TO 8 HAS A MENTAL OR BEHAVIORAL OR DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER.

SO AGAIN, LOTS OF FOLKS, LOTS OF YOUNG PEOPLE WE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO.

AMONG ADOLESCENTS, NEARLY 33% WILL EXPERIENCE AN ANXIETY DISORDER.

DURING THEIR CHILDHOOD, 15% HAVE HAD A DEPRESSIVE DISORDER.

36% HAD PERSISTENT FEELINGS OF SADNESS OR HOPELESSNESS.

WAY TOO MANY.

AND SO WHEN I HEAR THE CONVERSATION ABOUT WE CAN'T EXPECT OUR TEACHERS TO TEACH THESE PROGRAMS, YOU'RE RIGHT.

AND ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE NOT ENGAGED AND DON'T WANT TO, BUT THERE ARE THINGS WE CAN DO TO HELP MAKE THEM MORE SENSITIVE WHEN THEY SEE THESE THINGS IN THEIR KIDS AND GET THOSE KIDS INTO CARE WITH FOLKS WHO ARE EQUIPPED AND WHO ARE ABLE MAY NOT BE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, COULD BE PEER, PEER BASED CARE AND LOTS OF THINGS THAT THAT ARE AVAILABLE. BUT I HEAR YOU AND I AGREE.

ALMOST 3 IN 5 TEENAGE GIRLS REPORTED FEELING SO PERSISTENTLY SAD OR HOPELESS ALMOST EVERY DAY FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN A ROW DURING THE PREVIOUS YEAR THAT THEY STOPPED REGULAR ACTIVITIES.

AND WE KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT IS WHEN KIDS STOP ENGAGING IN THE ACTIVITIES THAT THEY LOVE.

NEXT SLIDE. SO WE KNOW SOME OF THE DRIVERS ARE BEYOND WHAT'S HAPPENING INSIDE THE CHILD.

SO THERE'S GENETIC FACTORS, THERE'S EXTERNAL EVENTS.

THERE'S ALSO FAMILY AND COMMUNITY IMPACT.

FAMILY, COMMUNITY AND HEALTH CARE CHALLENGES ARE RELATED TO CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH.

SO WE'RE DEALING NOT JUST WITH WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE KID, BUT THESE THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO THEM EITHER IN THE COMMUNITY OR THE FAMILY.

ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EVENTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CHILDREN'S, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.

WE KNOW THAT. AND I WILL SAY BEFORE WE MOVE ON, I DIDN'T TALK ABOUT MY BACKGROUND OR WHY I GOT INTO WHAT I DID, BUT I WILL SAY THAT RIGHT AFTER I WAS BORN, MY MOM HAD A PSYCHOTIC BREAK AND WAS LATER DIAGNOSED WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA.

I LOST A BROTHER, A STEPBROTHER.

MY FATHER HAD POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS.

FROM HIS EXPERIENCE IN THE WAR, MY ACES SCORE WOULD BE OFF THE CHARTS.

SO THAT'S WHAT LED ME TO MENTAL HEALTH.

BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS I'M VERY SOLID BECAUSE THINGS WORK, SUPPORT WORKS, TREATMENT WORKS SO MANY RESOURCES.

SO THESE THINGS AREN'T AREN'T A CERTAINTY THAT OUR KIDS WILL THEN END UP CHRONICALLY SUFFERING.

BUT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT HOW DO WE ADDRESS ALL OF THIS? BECAUSE A ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT ALL.

AND ACTUALLY WE KIND OF NEED MULTIPLE SIZES WRAPPING AROUND OUR KIDS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE MOST VULNERABLE ALL AT ONCE.

NEXT SLIDE. MENTAL HEALTH AND SCHOOLS DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU ALL THIS, BUT THIS IS FROM RECENT REPORTS.

70% OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS REPORTED AN INCREASE IN THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS SEEKING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC.

76% OF SCHOOLS REPORTED AN INCREASE IN STAFF REPORTS OF STUDENTS EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND TRAUMA.

SO HUGE INCREASE IN KIDS NEEDING SERVICES, HUGE INCREASE IN FACULTY AND STAFF AND TEACHERS REPORTING THAT THEY'RE SEEING THESE THINGS IN KIDS AT IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

WE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF JOINING ONE OF YOUR EARLIER.

IT WAS THE MEETING LAST MONTH THAT WAS ALL ABOUT THIS.

AND AGAIN, WE WERE HONORED TO BE THERE AND AND REALLY EAGER TO HELP WHERE WE CAN.

THIS IS REALLY FRIGHTENING AND CONCERNING.

10% OF ALL ALCOHOL CONSUMED IN THE US IS BY PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 12 AND 20.

10% OF ALL ALCOHOL BECAUSE THEY BINGE DRINK.

THEY DON'T DRINK A GLASS OF WINE WITH DINNER.

3.2 MILLION YOUTH AGES 12 TO 20 BINGE DRINKING AT LEAST ONCE IN THE PAST MONTH.

NATIONALLY, 15% OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE USED ILLICIT OR INJECTION DRUGS.

15%. 14% OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MISUSE PRESCRIPTION OPIOIDS.

DRUG DEATHS AMONG CHILDREN AGES 10 TO 14, MORE THAN TRIPLED FROM 2019 TO 2020.

THE RATE OF OVERDOSE DEATHS AMONG ADOLESCENTS NEARLY DOUBLED IN 2020 AND ROSE ANOTHER 20% IN THE FIRST HALF OF 21.

SO WE GOT SOME SERIOUS PAIN AND SOME SERIOUS CHALLENGES ON OUR HANDS.

NEXT SLIDE. WELL BEING AMONG TEACHERS, FACULTY AND STAFF, BECAUSE JUST LIKE WITH PARENTS, YOU CAN'T IGNORE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING CARE OF THE KIDS BECAUSE THEIR WELL-BEING AFFECTS THE WELL-BEING OF THE THE STUDENTS.

OVER TWO THIRDS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS REPORTED IMPLEMENTING EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THEIR STAFF'S MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC.

THAT'S GREAT.

MORE THAN 25% OF TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS REPORTED EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION.

NOT GREAT. NEARLY 75% OF TEACHERS AND 85% OF PRINCIPALS SAID THEY WERE EXPERIENCING FREQUENT JOB RELATED STRESS, COMPARED WITH ONLY A THIRD OF WORKING ADULTS IN OTHER PROFESSIONS. THE ONLY OTHER PROFESSION THAT IS EVEN APPROACHING THIS SPACE IS HEALTH CARE WORKERS, WHICH IS WHERE I AM HERE IN CHICAGO.

AND THEN OF COURSE, SADLY, WE ADDED ANOTHER STRESSOR TO THE MIX FOR THE STUDENTS, THE STAFF, THE PARENTS.

THERE HAVE BEEN 157 SCHOOL SHOOTINGS SINCE 2018, RESULTING IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.

THERE HAVE ALREADY BEEN 13, MAYBE EVEN ANOTHER SINCE WE ADDED THIS.

SO WE'RE LOOKING AT A BAD YEAR AHEAD, WHICH ADDS STRESS AND ANXIETY TO THE MIX.

DATA DATA IS SO IMPORTANT.

AND SO BEING ABLE TO GATHER IT, TRACK IT AND CROSS REFERENCE SO WE START TO UNDERSTAND WHERE TO INTERVENE.

AND I WOULD ADD IN THERE AND THEIR FAMILIES AND WE KNOW WE CAN GET THERE.

WE KNOW THAT THAT TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS US TO HELP ISN'T THE SOLUTION FOR EVERYTHING, BUT IT CAN HELP.

SO WE BELIEVE THAT THE BEST WAY TO HELP SYSTEMS LIKE YOURS AND OTHERS IS TO TO BRING ALL THIS TOGETHER. HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY BE BE USED TO IDENTIFY, TO DELIVER, TO INTEGRATE, TO COORDINATE.

SO THAT'S WHERE I'M PUTTING MY ENERGY.

SO WE WORKED COLLABORATIVELY WITH THEM.

WE CAME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEIR NEEDS WERE, AND THAT LED US TO BUILD THE PORTAL AND ADD THE ENHANCED AFFINITY GROUP SO THAT WE COULD EXPAND EXISTING CAPABILITIES THAT THEY ALREADY HAD.

SO WE BUILT FOR THEM THREE ENHANCED AFFINITY GROUPS THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING OFFERED TO THE WILLIAM AND MARY COMMUNITY.

THERE'S ONE THAT'S FOR ALL STUDENTS, ALL FACULTY, ALL STAFF TOGETHER.

SO YOU COME INTO THE APP, YOU KNOW IT'S FREE.

EVERYBODY'S GOT IT.

AND WHAT I WILL SAY IS, WHICH IS GREAT ABOUT COLLABORATION, WE DIDN'T KNOW WHEN WE STARTED TALKING TO THEM HOW MUCH THEY NEEDED A SPACE TO INTEGRATE WHAT THEY HAD AND TRACK AND, AND ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITY COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. AND NOW THAT WE HAVE THE PORTAL, EVERY CONVERSATION WE'RE HAVING WITH OTHER, WHETHER IT'S GOVERNMENT OR OTHER SCHOOL SYSTEMS, THAT'S HUGE TO THEM.
