LEARNING. THIS SCHOOL WAS DESIGNED SO THAT ACP PROGRAMS AND SUPPORTS WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THE STRENGTHS AND NEEDS OF THE WHOLE CHILD.

REFLECT AND SUPPORT HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS.

ENGAGE AND INSPIRE STUDENTS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR LEARNING AND ENABLE STUDENTS TO EXPLORE AND SUCCEED IN THEIR POST-SECONDARY PATHWAY.

IN THIS VIDEO, WE SHARE THREE EXAMPLES OF THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND SUPPORTS ACPS OFFERS TO INSPIRE STUDENTS AND ADDRESS BARRIERS TO LEARNING.

THE FIRST OF THESE IS EXPANDING ACCESS TO OUR ALEXANDRIA CITY HIGH SCHOOL'S SATELLITE CAMPUS, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO DELIVER A CURRICULUM THAT IS FLEXIBLE IN SCHEDULING AND STUDENT CENTER AND SUPPORT.

MANY OF OUR STUDENTS REQUIRE A MORE FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE AND COMMONLY AVAILABLE IN A TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SETTING DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES SUCH AS BEING AN ATHLETE NEEDING TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY OR HAVING THE DESIRE TO GRADUATE EARLY.

THIS APPROACH RECOGNIZES THE CHALLENGES THAT STUDENTS MAY SOMETIMES FACE IN COMPLETING THEIR EDUCATION.

IT ALLOWS STUDENTS TO SELECT A SCHOOL SESSION THAT WORKS BEST FOR THEIR PARTICULAR SCHEDULE AND ALLOWS THEM TO WORK AT THEIR OWN PACE, WHILE ALSO BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES AT HHS.

EACH HHS SATELLITE STUDENT IS ASSIGNED WITH AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR WHO WORKS ONE ON ONE WITH STUDENTS, CAREFULLY MONITORS THEIR PROGRESS, AND TAKES ON A PROACTIVE ROLE IN ADDRESSING ANY ACADEMIC CHALLENGES FACING THE STUDENT.

ADDITIONALLY, IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH STUDENTS, ACADEMIC ADVISORS, THE STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM MONITORS STUDENT'S SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL AND ACADEMIC LEARNING AND PROVIDES INTERVENTIONS AS NEEDED.

OUR SATELLITE CAMPUS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW ACPS HAS IDENTIFIED AND USED BEST PRACTICES IN ONLINE AND BLENDED LEARNING TO DIFFERENTIATE SUPPORT AND INCREASE ACCESS TO INSTRUCTION AND PROMOTE INNOVATION.

THE SECOND EXAMPLE TO HIGHLIGHT IS OUR TALENTED AND GIFTED PROGRAM OR TAG, WHICH ALSO ENSURES THAT A GUARANTEED AND VIABLE CURRICULUM IS DELIVERED TO ALL STUDENTS.

WE BELIEVE THAT ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BENEFIT FROM A RIGOROUS AND CHALLENGING CURRICULUM THAT MEETS THEIR LEARNING NEEDS AND ADDRESSES THEIR STRENGTHS THROUGH ADVANCED ACADEMIC SERVICES.

BEYOND THE REGULAR CURRICULUM ARE PROVIDED FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K THROUGH 12, WHOSE ABILITIES AND POTENTIAL FOR ACCOMPLISHMENT REQUIRE SPECIAL PROGRAMS TO MEET THEIR EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

EXAMPLES OF THESE SERVICES INCLUDE ENRICHED AND INTEGRATED CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ENHANCE CREATIVITY AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS.

HONORS AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES.

INDEPENDENT STUDY.

DUAL ENROLLMENT IN COLLEGE COURSES FOR ACCESS TO SUMMER RESIDENTIAL GOVERNESS SCHOOL.

AND THE YOUNG SCHOLARS MODEL, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO HELP IDENTIFY STUDENTS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS FOR GIFTED SERVICES AND PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO NURTURE TALENT AND BUILD CONFIDENCE SO THAT STUDENTS CAN MEET THEIR POTENTIAL.

THIS WORK ENSURES A CURRICULUM THAT IS DIFFERENTIATED TO MEET THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS.

FINALLY, ACPS PROVIDES SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AGES 2 TO 21 WHO ARE FOUND ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES.

ONCE FOUND ELIGIBLE, AN INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM OR IEP, IS SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED FOR THE STUDENT BY THEIR PARENTS OR GUARDIANS, EDUCATORS, PRINCIPAL, AND OTHER INVITED PARTICIPANTS.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN THE LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN.

SERVICES MAY BE PROVIDED IN THE CHILD'S CLASSROOM BY SPECIAL EDUCATION STAFF OR THE GRADE LEVEL TEACHER, AND THE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER COULD PLAN AND CO TEACH DURING SPECIFIC CONTENT AREAS.

THESE SERVICES MAY ALSO INCLUDE DIRECT SERVICES PROVIDED TO A CHILD IN A SMALL GROUP SETTING LED BY THE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER IN A LOCATION OUTSIDE OF THE GRADE LEVEL CLASSROOM.

OTHER SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES MAY INCLUDE SPEECH THERAPY, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, OR PHYSICAL THERAPY BY PROFESSIONALS IN THOSE FIELDS BASED ON THE LEVEL OF NEED IDENTIFIED THROUGH EVALUATION.

THESE SERVICES ARE TYPICALLY PROVIDED TO THE CHILD IN A SMALL GROUP SETTING OUTSIDE OF THE GRADE LEVEL CLASSROOM.

CITYWIDE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES ARE ALSO PROVIDED.

IN SPECIFIC SITUATIONS WHEN ADDITIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES ARE NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE STUDENT, STUDENTS WHOSE NEEDS ARE MORE INTENSIVE MAY RECEIVE SERVICES FOR ALL ACADEMIC CONTENT AREAS IN A SPECIAL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES INCREASED SUPPORT AND DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES IN A CITYWIDE PROGRAM ARE HIGHLY INDIVIDUALIZED, SYSTEMATIC AND PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR REPEATED PRACTICE IN ORDER TO MAKE PROGRESS. THE RELATED SERVICES OF SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPY MAY ALSO BE REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS IN CITYWIDE PROGRAMS. CITYWIDE PROGRAM PLACEMENT IS DETERMINED BY THE IEP TEAM AND BASED ON A STUDENT'S LEVEL OF NEED.

ACPS HAS CITYWIDE PROGRAMS AT VARIOUS SCHOOL SITES ACROSS THE DIVISION THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM, INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES, EMOTIONAL DISABILITIES, OR MULTIPLE DISABILITIES.

THE JOB OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, ALONG WITH THE WORK AND INPUT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, SENIOR LEADERSHIP, STAFF, PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND FAMILIES, IS TO PLAN, PREPARE, ADOPT, IMPLEMENT, MONITOR AND CONTINUOUSLY EVALUATE SERVICES AND SUPPORTS LIKE THESE TO ENSURE THAT THE DECISIONS WE MAKE ARE ALIGNED WITH THE NEEDS AND PRIORITIES OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WITH OUR CORE VALUES.

ACP CURRENTLY HAS OVER 7300 GRADE SIX THROUGH 12 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN CTE COURSES.

THERE ARE THREE ACADEMIES THE ACADEMY OF FINANCE, THE STEM ACADEMY, AND THE GOVERNOR'S HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY.

THE SIX CTE PROGRAM AREAS AND JROTC HAVE 30 PATHWAYS WITH OVER 80 HIGH SCHOOL COURSES AND NINE MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES THAT ARE TAUGHT BY 65 INSTRUCTORS.

THE CTE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS REPRESENT THE NATIONAL CTE.

NONTRADITIONAL CAREER FIELDS AND SPECIAL POPULATIONS FOR FEDERAL PERKINS GRANT FUNDING.

THE COMMITTEE MEETS QUARTERLY IN OCTOBER, DECEMBER, MARCH AND MAY FROM 4 P.M.

TO 5:30 P.M.

AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN THE SCHOOL DIVISION.

THE SCOPE OF WORK WAS APPROVED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD AND AFFIRMS OUR COMMITMENT TO MEETING THE ACADEMIC AND WORKFORCE NEEDS OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND ASPS.

THIS SLIDE INDICATES THE SPECIFIC CHARGE THE COMMITTEE AND THE CRUCIAL ROLE THAT CTE COMMITTEE PLAYS IN REVIEWING AND APPROVING THE ANNUAL PERKINS GRANT APPLICATION.

HIGHLIGHTS. FIRST, WE HAVE THE CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM, WHICH IS PARTNERED WITH THE SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT ALEXANDRIA CITY HIGH SCHOOL TO OFFER A UNIQUE COURSE CALLED EDUCATION FOR EMPLOYMENT IN THE CULINARY ARTS.

THIS PROGRAM TEACHES SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS IMPORTANT CULINARY SKILLS RELATED TO FOOD SAFETY, HEALTH, HEALTHY FOOD PREPARATION AND GENERAL LIFESTYLE SKILLS.

THE STUDENTS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN THIS PARTICULAR CLASS ARE PARTNERED UP WITH ADVANCED LEVEL STUDENTS, SO UPPERCLASSMEN WHO TAKE PART IN THIS COURSE ALONGSIDE THEM WITH THE AKP'S NUTRITION DEPARTMENT PROVIDING OVERALL CURRICULUM SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE.

THERE'S BEEN REALLY GREAT RESPONSE TO THIS PARTICULAR COURSE OVER THE COURSE OF ITS RUN.

THIS IS ITS SECOND YEAR IN OPERATION.

WE'VE SEEN ENROLLMENT GROW KIND OF A MASSIVE PERCENT.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE HOW THAT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE OVER THE COMING YEARS.

RECENTLY WE HAD THE GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO BRING OUR ADVISORY BOARD TO THE AMAZON WEB SERVICES SKILL CENTER, A SKILL CENTER IN ARLINGTON. WE HELD OUR REGULAR MEETING IN THIS SPACE.

STAFF AT THE CENTER PROVIDED US A TOUR, DISCUSS THE ROLE OF CLOUD BASED COMPUTING SOFTWARE, THE CERTIFICATION AND CLOUD BASED COMPUTING SKILLS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO FACULTY.

AND WE'RE CURRENTLY IN THE WORKS OF PARTNERING WITH US TO DETERMINE HOW WE CAN BRING THIS CURRICULUM TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL.

THE LAST THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT REALLY BRIEFLY IS THE STEM FOR HER DAY.

ONE OF OUR CTE ADVISORY MEMBERS IS THE HEAD OF STEM FOR HER.

SHE PROVIDED A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO OUR STUDENTS TO ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE IN A DAY LONG CAREER EVENT.

ATTENDANCE AT THIS EVENT WAS APPROXIMATELY 300 STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH, REPRESENTING 12 DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS, INCLUDING PHS.

THEY WERE ABLE TO ENGAGE IN VARIOUS STEM HANDS ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND REALLY EXCITINGLY SOMETHING THAT WE'RE QUITE PROUD OF SINCE THIS WAS OUR FIRST YEAR.

ENGAGING IN THE PROGRAM.

IS THE TEAM OF GIRLS FROM HHS ACTUALLY CAME IN THIRD PLACE IN THE AUDI STEM DRIVE LIKE A GIRL ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRESENTATION COMPETITION.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING QUITE EXCITING.

WE'VE HAD A GREAT TIME PARTNERING WITH STEM FOR HER AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING HOW THIS PARTNERSHIP GROWS IN TERMS OF SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND CONTINUED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR FOLKS.

I'M AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY IN THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, AND I'M SPEAKING AS A RESIDENT OF ALEXANDRIA.

AND IN MY CAPACITY AS A RESEARCHER AND A PROFESSOR.

SO I HAVE SPENT THE LAST TEN YEARS STUDYING SCHOOL CLIMATE AND EQUITABLE DISCIPLINE.

AND AS ACP IS CONSIDERING YOUR BUDGET FOR THE COMING YEAR, I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK IN FAVOR OF FUNDING TWO OR MORE ADDITIONAL RESTORATIVE PRACTICES POSITIONS AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL, REALLY TO HELP WITH SCHOOLS IMPLEMENT RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WITH FIDELITY.

I SPENT TEN YEARS IN DENVER, COLORADO, WHERE I RELOCATED FROM LAST YEAR, AND THERE I WAS DOING A LOT OF WORK IN RESTORATIVE JUSTICE, SEEING OVER 100 SCHOOLS IN THAT DISTRICT.

AND AND REALLY IT'S IMPERATIVE THAT CENTRAL OFFICE HELPS WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RESTORATIVE JUSTICE.

REALLY, THE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENED THERE WAS THAT DENVER WAS A NATIONAL LEADER ON THE ISSUE OF RESTORATIVE JUSTICE.

BUT OVER TIME, IN A FAILURE TO INVEST ADEQUATELY IN CENTRAL OFFICE TO SUPPORT SCHOOLS, THAT THAT IS NO LONGER THE CASE.

AND SO IT'S IMPERATIVE REALLY THAT CENTRAL OFFICE DOES PROVIDE THAT SUPPORT FOR HIGH QUALITY IMPLEMENTATION OF RESTORATIVE PRACTICES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT, PARTICULARLY WITH AN EQUITY LENS.

SO WE KNOW FROM THE RESEARCH THAT JUST BECAUSE RJ IS USED IN SCHOOLS DOESN'T MEAN THAT BLACK AND LATINO STUDENTS GET IT, GET ACCESS TO RJ AS OFTEN AS WHITE STUDENTS. SO FOR THAT REASON, TOO, I WOULD SUGGEST AN AUDIT OF RESTORATIVE JUSTICE IN THE DISTRICT TO MAKE SURE IT'S BEING IMPLEMENTED IN SCHOOLS AND THAT STAFF DO HAVE SUPPORT.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF RJ DOESN'T RECEIVE SUPPORT IS THAT PEOPLE WILL BLAME THE PROGRAM ITSELF.

AND, AND AND WE REALLY NEED TO GET GOOD SUPPORT AROUND THAT SO THAT RESTORATIVE JUSTICE DOESN'T BECOME A NEW HATED SORT OF REFORM.

RIGHT? WE NEED GOOD IMPLEMENTATION OF IT, INADEQUATE SUPPORT.

SO LASTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE THAT AUDIT AS WELL.

I DO BELIEVE EVERYONE HERE IS TRYING THEIR BEST.

BUT I DON'T THINK THIS IS THE WAY BRINGING IN PEOPLE TO SEPARATE US WON'T BRING US TOGETHER.

TECHNOLOGY CAN'T SOLVE A SOCIAL PROBLEM, AND THIS DISTRICT HAS A TERRIBLE STAFFING CRISIS.

I HAVE HEARD YOUR STAFF AND THE PARENTS AND THE STUDENTS BEGGING FOR POSITIONS TO BE FILLED, NEW ONES TO BE CREATED, BEGGING FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL STABILITY THAT COMES WITH ADEQUATE STAFF PAY.

NOT ONLY PARENTS, BUT STUDENTS ASKING FOR MORE PSYCHOLOGISTS AND COUNSELORS AND DE-ESCALATION PROGRAMS. THE STUDENTS VERY POLITELY AND RESTRAINED, WIDELY, EXPRESSING DISAPPOINTMENT WITH THE ADMINISTRATION'S SEEMING INDIFFERENCE TOWARDS WORKING WITH THEM ON STUDENT PRIORITIES AND A STEADY DRIP OF FRUSTRATION AND ALIENATION MAY NOT SEEM THAT BAD COMPARED TO THE WORST HEADLINES, BUT HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE HEARD? I DON'T KNOW HOW THIS HAS HAPPENED, AND I DON'T KNOW HOW WE GOT HERE.

I KNOW YOU'RE IN A TOUGH SPOT, AND I KNOW THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE UNDER CONSTANT STRESS HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING GOOD DECISIONS, WHETHER THEY'RE CHILDREN OR ADULTS.

PEOPLE WHO ARE UNDER CONSTANT STRESS CAN ONLY THINK OF NOW AND NEXT, NOT THE FUTURE AND WHAT COULD BE.

AND THAT IS THE WORST POSSIBLE POSITION FOR A SCHOOL OF ALL PLACES TO BE IN.

IF WE INVEST IN THE STAFF AND THE STUDENTS, OUR COMMUNITY WILL COME OUT STRONGER FOR IT AND WE'LL KNOW THAT WE REALLY DID DO ALL WE COULD.

THE COMMISSION HELD A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION LAST MONTH THAT FOCUSED ON THE AVAILABLE AVAILABILITY OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES TO ALEXANDRIA'S CHILDREN AND YOUTH.

ROUNDTABLE PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED REPRESENTATIVES FROM CPS, THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA, THE NONPROFIT SECTOR, AND A STUDENT FROM ACA.

WHAT WE HEARD AT THE ROUNDTABLE CONFIRMED WHAT WE ALREADY KNEW.

THERE IS A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS AMONG OUR YOUTH.

WE HEARD SOME TERRIFYING STATISTICS.

INITIAL INTAKES IN ALEXANDRIA HAVE RISEN BY 28% SINCE 2021.

OVERDOSES AMONG YOUTH IN THE CITY HAVE RISEN DRAMATICALLY, AND HALF OF STUDENTS IN ALEXANDRIA WOULD SCREEN POSITIVE IN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION. WE ALSO HEARD OF THE CRITICAL ROLE THAT SCHOOLS PLAY IN PROVIDING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH.

IN FACT, CHILDREN AND YOUTH ARE OVER 400% MORE LIKELY TO RECEIVE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IF THEY ARE IN SCHOOL.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR TEACHERS, SCHOOL COUNSELORS, SCHOOL THERAPISTS AND ADMINISTRATORS CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.

THEREFORE, THE COMMISSION WANTS TO CONVEY ITS SINCERE GRATITUDE TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR SUBMITTING AD DELETES TO THE FISCAL YEAR 2024 ACA CPS BUDGET THAT RECOGNIZE AND ADDRESS BOTH THE CURRENT MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS AMONG YOUTH AND THE IMPACT THAT SCHOOLS CAN PLAY IN ADDRESSING IT.

WE APPLAUD YOUR INCLUSION OF FUNDS FOR ADDITIONAL PSYCHOLOGISTS POSITIONS AT THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER AND THREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

YOU ALL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING IMPORTANT DECISIONS THAT WILL IMPACT OUR ACPS STUDENTS AND THEIR OUTCOMES.

WHILE WE ARE APPRECIATIVE THAT SOME OF YOU TOOK THE TIME TO MEET DIRECTLY WITH OUR YOUTH GROUP TO HEAR THEIR CONCERNS AND EXPERIENCES ON THEIR NEEDS AND SCHOOLS, A FEW MONTHS AGO WE SAW THAT THE ORIGINAL PROPOSED BUDGET IN THE LATEST ADJUSTMENTS AND WE STILL CONTINUE TO SEE THE LACK OF INVESTMENT IN HOLISTIC RESOURCES FOR STUDENT WELL-BEING THAT IS BEING PLACED FOR THE FY 2024 BUDGET.

AS A CPS LEADERSHIP, YOU ARE NOT PRIORITIZING AND LISTENING TO STUDENT NEEDS AND UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS STILL AN ONGOING GAP THAT LIES IN REACHING THOSE NECESSARY MENTAL HEALTH AND RESTORATIVE BUILDING SUPPORT STUDENTS DESERVE.

BASED ON A RECENT STUDY BY THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NORTH OF VIRGINIA TITLED THE SHAPE OF YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH THAT INCLUDED ALEXANDRIA YOUTH.

WE SEE THAT THE STATE OF YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH REQUIRES IMMEDIATE RESOURCES.

SOME EXAMPLES OF THESE STATISTICS INCLUDE THAT ONE IN THREE YOUTH STATED THAT THEY FELT PERSISTENT SADNESS AND HOPELESSNESS OVER THE PAST YEAR, AND ONE IN FOUR STATED THAT THEY HAD RECENT SYMPTOMS, SYMPTOMS OF CLINICAL DEPRESSION.

SEEING THE URGENCY OF THE ISSUE AND NOT ADDRESSING IT WITH THE PROPER SUPPORTS WILL ONLY CAUSE THE ROOT CAUSE, THE ROOT ISSUE TO CONTINUE AND EXISTENCE. THAT FURTHER IMPACTS THE SUCCESS OF STUDENTS OF COLOR AND ASPS.

BUT YET WE ARE SEEING THAT SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE BEING MORE REACTIVE RATHER THAN PROACTIVE IN FUNDING AND PROGRAMING.

AS YOU ARE AWARE, OUR YOUTH GROUP, ALEXANDER UNITED TEENS, THAT INCLUDES THE YOUTH OF OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE CLUB MEMBERS, HAVE LED A PETITION TO EXPRESS THEIR CONCERNS, WHERE 117 ACP STUDENTS AND PARENTS SIGNED.

59 COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR TEACHERS AND OTHERS ALSO SUPPORTED THIS PETITION.

WE CONTINUE TO BELIEVE THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE PSYCHOLOGISTS THAT THAN THAN WHAT'S IN THE CURRENT PROPOSED BUDGET AND MORE INVESTMENTS IN RESTORATIVE PRACTICE THAT ARE NEEDED.

AND ALTHOUGH TONIGHT YOU WILL BE TAKING A VOTE IN THE BUDGET OR ADVOCACY WOULD NOT END HERE, OUR ORGANIZATION, TENANTS AND WORKERS UNITED, ALONG WITH OUR YOUTH AND PARENT PARENT MEMBERS, WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER WITH CPS ON HOW THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL ENSURE THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ACROSS ACPS, ESPECIALLY ON THOSE IMPLEMENTED RESOURCES THAT ACP WILL BE INVESTING IN.

THE TELEVISION AND MEDIA PROGRAM AT OUR SCHOOL TO CREATE IS A WONDERFUL DOCUMENTARY THAT I ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO LOOK AT TMA ON YOUTUBE AND WATCH. IT IS ABOUT AN HOUR, I WOULD SAY, AND IT'S CREATED BY STUDENTS BROADCASTING THE ENTIRE TRIP.

I IN LITERATURE CLUB HAD A POETRY EVENT THIS MONDAY.

A STUDENT SHARED THEIR POEMS AND THERE WERE JUDGES GIVING THEM FEEDBACK AT THE END.

MANY OF OUR ALUMNI JOINED AND AFTER SCHOOL, TAUGHT ON VIOLENCE AND HAVE FORMED AN ALUMINUM NETWORK TO COME IN AND GIVE MOTIVATIONAL TALKS TO THE CURRENT STUDENTS. AND ON FEBRUARY 21ST, DURING LUNCH, WE WILL BE HAVING OUR FIRST INTEREST MEETING AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS COMMITTEE, WHICH I ORGANIZED AND SUPPORTED, SPONSORED BY MR. ELIAS INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY AND OUT OF INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY STUDENTS.

ALL STUDENTS, STAFF AND VISITORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WALK THROUGH THE SCREENING EQUIPMENT AS THEY ENTER THE FACILITY.

IF THERE IS NO ALERT, THE INDIVIDUAL WILL PROCEED TO THE ID VERIFICATION PROCESS AND THEN ONTO THEIR INTENDED DESTINATION.

IF THE SYSTEM ALERTS, THE INDIVIDUAL WILL MOVE TO THE SECONDARY SCREENING LOCATION FOR A MORE THOROUGH SEARCH.

IF A WEAPON OR PROHIBITED MATERIAL IS FOUND DURING THE SECONDARY SEARCH, THE ITEMS WILL BE CONFISCATED BY THE APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL, WHETHER IT BE ADMINISTRATION.

WE ARE SUGGESTING TO BEGIN THE PILOT PROGRAM AT THE HS KING STREET AND MINI HOWARD CAMPUSES, ALONG WITH THE TWO MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUSES OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AND FRANCIS C HAMMOND. THE RATIONALE FOR SELECTING THESE LOCATIONS INCLUDES THE FACT THAT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF OUR WEAPONS RELATED INCIDENTS TO DATE HAVE HAPPENED AT THE SECONDARY SCHOOL LOCATIONS.

THESE LOCATIONS ARE ALSO STAFFED WITH SROS AND CSOS FOR SECURITY SUPPORT, AND THE VOLUME OF STUDENTS AND STAFF AT THESE LOCATIONS WILL ALLOW US TO PROPERLY TEST THE SCREENING PROCESS. NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.

TO PROVIDE SOME CONTEXT AS RELATES TO THE COSTS.

EACH AFFECTED UNIT RUNS ABOUT $60,000 EACH IN THE MOBILE OPTION IS ROUGHLY $13,000 PER UNIT.

WE WILL LIKELY USE A MIX OF BOTH SYSTEMS AT ALL PILOT LOCATIONS AS THIS WILL PROVIDE THE MOST FLEXIBILITY BASED ON SCHOOL CONFIGURATION AND ACTIVITY USE, SUCH AS IF WE NEED TO USE THESE FOR ATHLETIC EVENTS.

WE CURRENTLY PLAN TO FUND THE PILOT PROGRAM USING CIP SECURITY FUNDS AND WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE IF THERE ARE ANY GRANT OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE.

SO IN HEARING HIM SHARE WITH US YESTERDAY, IT IT TAKES A LOT TO REALLY DAMAGE THAT EQUIPMENT, IF THAT IS WHETHER IT'S INTENTIONAL VANDALISM OR JUST HIGH USE. SO AGAIN, TO THE LAST POINT, I WANT TO TIE IN MORE ABOUT THE PILOT WEAPONS ABATEMENT PROGRAM AS IT RELATES TO THE DATA FROM AUGUST OF 2021 UP UNTIL THIS LAST SEMESTER, WE HAVE RECORDED 43 WEAPONS RELATED INCIDENTS TO MEAN CONFIRMATION OF A WEAPON ON CAMPUS AND OR THREATS OF A WEAPON ON CAMPUS.

ADDITIONALLY, WEAPONS RELATED INCIDENTS REMAIN STAGNANT FROM THE PREVIOUS SEMESTER.

WE HAD 15 LAST SEMESTER AND WE HAD 15 THIS MOST RECENT SEMESTER.

THE TYPES OF WEAPONS THAT WERE CONFISCATED THIS PAST SEMESTER INCLUDE KNIVES, A PAIR OF BRASS KNUCKLES, STUN GUNS, TASERS AND GUNS. PEPPER SPRAY, WHICH IS CONSIDERED A NON LETHAL WEAPON, WAS ALSO CONFISCATED THIS LAST SEMESTER AS PART OF A CONTINUED ADVOCACY FOR THE WEAPONS ABATEMENT PROGRAM. WE ALSO WANT TO FOCUS ON THE EDUCATIONAL ELEMENT OF THE DANGERS AND CONSEQUENCES OF WEAPONS IN SCHOOLS AND WILL WORK TO INCORPORATE THAT IN THE OVERALL ROLLOUT OF THE PILOT PROGRAM IF IT IS APPROVED.

WE WANT TO CLARIFY FOR THE PUBLIC, BUT ALSO FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD, THAT THAT BOUNDARY ANALYSIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT WE NEED TO REDISTRICT EVERY FIVE YEARS.

SO WE CAN LOOK AT WALKABILITY AS WELL.

AND THIS BREAKDOWN WILL GIVE US A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT THE POPULATION FOR EACH SCHOOL SHOULD BE, BASED ON EITHER THE ATTENDING ENROLLMENT OR THE LIVE IN. WE COULD SCROLL DOWN A LITTLE BIT.

WE WOULD PUT IT TOGETHER FOR YOU, FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.

SOME OF THESE WE'VE HAD A GOOD AMOUNT OF CONVERSATION ABOUT DURING THE SIP WORK SESSIONS, THE FIRST OF THOSE BEING IF WE ANTICIPATE ANY CHANGES TO EXISTING OR FUTURE PROGRAMING AT PARTICULARLY AT JEFFERSON, HOUSTON AND PATRICK HENRY OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, WE WOULD NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT COULD BE IN ORDER TO INCORPORATE IT INTO THE ANALYSIS, BECAUSE THAT WOULD CHANGE POTENTIALLY THE ENROLLMENT, THE LIVE IN ENROLLMENT AS WELL.

IF WE'RE COMPARING CERTAIN GRADE LEVELS AS WELL AS THE CAPACITY FOR THOSE SCHOOLS AT CERTAIN GRADE LEVELS.

ALSO DISCUSSING PRE-K, WE DO HAVE PRE-K CLASSES IN SEVERAL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND WE ALSO HAVE THE PRE-K CENTER OR THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER ESTABLISHED AT THE PREVIOUSLY JOHN ADAMS. BUT THERE'S NOT PRE-K IN ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

AND IF THAT IS A PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD OR SOMETHING THAT WE WANT TO CONSIDER OR MAYBE THE BOUNDARY ANALYSIS WOULD WOULD INDICATE SOME NEED FOR THAT AT CERTAIN SCHOOLS, THAT WOULD ALSO DRIVE SOME OF THE CAPACITY, AS WELL AS ENROLLMENT INFORMATION FOR THOSE SPECIFIC SCHOOLS.

MOVING ON TO POLICY CONSIDERATIONS, WHERE THE SCHOOL BOARD SPENT THE BULK OF THEIR TIME LAST TIME FOR THE REDISTRICTING EFFORT THAT TOOK PLACE.

THE SCHOOL BOARD WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IMPLEMENTATION, SUCH AS A TIMELINE FOR THOSE NEW BOUNDARIES TO TAKE EFFECT, AS WELL AS ANY PHASED IMPLEMENTATION OR WHAT'S COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS GRANDFATHERING.

SO, FOR EXAMPLE, THE SCHOOL BOARD IN 2018 CHOSE TO ALLOW FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS TO STAY WITH THEIR SIBLINGS.

I WILL SAY IT DID NOT ALLEVIATE THE CAPACITY ISSUES AS QUICKLY AS SOME MAY HAVE HOPED THE REDISTRICTING EFFORT DID, BUT IT DID ALLOW FAMILIES WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN IN A CERTAIN SCHOOL FOR A LONG TIME TO CONTINUE TO FINISH OUT THEIR PROGRAM THERE.

SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE SCHOOL BOARD CONSIDERATIONS OR POLICY DECISIONS THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE MADE.

AND WE'RE JUST SAYING HERE THAT THOSE COULD BE MADE AT A LATER TIME IN THE PROCESS IF THE SCHOOL BOARD DOES DECIDE TO GO THROUGH WITH A REDISTRICTING EFFORT.

THE ONLY OTHER POINT IN THE BACKGROUND, I TALKED A LOT ABOUT WHY WE'RE COMING TO YOU TONIGHT WITH A PROPOSED BOUNDARY ANALYSIS.

THIS WEEK SERVES AS A TIME TO CELEBRATE THE STRENGTHS AND POTENTIAL OF OUR NATION'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND HOW THEY CAN HELP SHAPE OUR NATION'S FUTURE OF SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS. ON FEBRUARY THE 15TH, WE CELEBRATED NATIONAL SCHOOL RESOURCE EXCUSE ME NATIONAL SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER APPRECIATION DAY.

SO WE WANTED TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUABLE WORK OF SROS IN OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

ALSO RECENTLY WE HAD A STAFF MEMBER, DR.

SEARS, WHO IS AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE RECOGNIZED BY THE VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR HER FIVE DECADES OF WORK, AND SHE WAS THERE ALONG WITH DELEGATE BENNETT PARKER, TO RECOGNIZE HER EFFORTS.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE ALSO IN ORDER TO SCHOOL COUNSELOR CHRISTINA TROS AT CORE KELLEY SCHOOL FOR MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

THE FIRST ONE HERE IS FOR FOR 90 DAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

CANDACE DORIN IS AMONG THE RECIPIENTS OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS OUTSTANDING CROSSING GUARD AWARD.

MR. MISSOURIAN, ACTUALLY, SHE DOES DOUBLE DUTY AT FTD.

SHE IS A SCHOOL COUNSELOR, BUT SHE ALSO MAKES SURE THAT SHE SUPPORTS THE TRAFFIC NEAR THE SCHOOL GARAGE SO THAT FAMILIES CAN DROP OFF THEIR CHILDREN SAFELY.

THE WE THE PEOPLE TEAM AT ALEXANDRIA CITY HIGH SCHOOL, ONE OF THE BEST UNIT TO AWARD AT THE STATE FINALS ON JANUARY THE 28TH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.

THIS TEAM EARNED THE HONOR FOR THEIR DEFENSE OF TESTIMONY RELATED TO HOW DID THE FARMERS CREATE THE CONSTITUTION.

AND THOSE STUDENTS INCLUDED J.B.

BROCK TAGER AND KC MALIK CANNATA AND MAKAI STEWART.

SO CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE STUDENTS AND A JOB WELL DONE TO ALL OF OUR ALEXANDRIA CITY SCIENCE FAIR PARTICIPANTS.

53 PROJECTS WERE PRESENTED BY MORE THAN 60 STUDENTS WHO ADVANCED TO COMPETE IN THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR.

AND THE REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, MARCH 4TH.

SO WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GO OUT.

IT'S AT WAKEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL IN ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA.

WE ALSO WANTED TO THANK EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN MAKING THIS YEAR'S FIDDLE FEST A SUCCESS.

THE DAYLONG EVENT WAS ON JANUARY THE 27TH AND ALL FIFTH GRADE ORCHESTRA STUDENTS WERE WORKING ALONGSIDE WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA DIRECTORS WITH A PERFORMANCE THAT THEY GAVE AT THE END OF THE DAY.

VERONICA JACKSON, AS SHE BELIEVED THAT THIS EVENTS REALLY, TRULY HELPS GROW OUR STRINGS PROGRAM.
