STAFF RETENTION AND RECRUITMENT IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A PRIORITY FOR OUR SCHOOL DIVISION, AS WE KNOW THAT THE STAFF IS THE HEART OF THE OPERATIONS FOR ALL THAT WE DO, AND WE MUST MAKE SURE THAT WE VALUE OUR STAFF AS WE MOVE FORWARD BECAUSE THEY ARE KEY TO EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN. WE DO KNOW SOME OF OUR CHALLENGES, OF COURSE, HAVE BEEN STAFF BURNOUT. WE HEAR THAT FROM OUR STAFF, WE HEAR THAT FROM OUR ORGANIZATIONS, AND WE ARE DEFINITELY FOCUSED ON THAT AS WELL. THAT IS A BIG CHALLENGE THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON THE NATIONAL TEACHER AND BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE AND THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE SALARIES THAT ARE OFFERED IN THIS D.C. METRO AREA HAVE TO BE ADDRESSED SO THAT WE CAN PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS WITH A QUALITY EDUCATION. WE MUST ALSO WORK TO ADDRESS THE MANY FORMS OF TRAUMA THAT OUR STUDENTS FACE THEY HAVE FACED IN THE PAST, AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FACE IT AS WE WORK OUR WAY OUT OF THIS PANDEMIC AND MAKE SURE WE MEET THEIR NEEDS. AND LASTLY, TO ENSURE THAT WE ALWAYS HAVE SAFE AND SECURE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, I THINK EVERYONE HAS HEARD ME SPEAK TO MY ROLE AND WANTING TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT'S A PRIORITY. ADDITIONALLY, OUR PROPOSED BUDGET MAKES A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN TRYING TO ADDRESS STUDENT TRAUMA BY ADDING SCHOOL COUNSELORS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, EMTS, SPECIALISTS AND A SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR. AND, YOU KNOW, THE IMPORTANT NEED THAT WE HAVE THERE. WE MUST MAKE SURE ALSO THAT WE'RE ADDRESSING AND SECURING MEASURES TO MEET OUR STUDENTS BASIC NEEDS SO THAT WE CAN ENSURE THAT THEY ACHIEVE THEIR ACADEMIC SUCCESS. AND. ON THE CHART ON ON THE SCREEN THAT YOU SEE HERE, I KNOW THE NUMBERS ARE A LITTLE BIT SMALL AND HARD TO READ DEPENDING ON HOW YOU'RE VIEWING THE MEETING THIS EVENING.
