I'M HERE TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT EQUITY, SPECIFICALLY THE RACIAL EQUITY AT THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD AS TO CURRENT MISSION.

MY COMMENTS ARE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WHO, LIKE MYSELF, BELONG TO THE MINORITY COMMUNITY.

I AM ASKING YOU TO NOT PERPETUATE THE SYSTEMIC RACISM YOU CLAIM TO A POOR WHEN THINKING ABOUT OR DISCUSSING MINORITIES REQUEST BALL, THE WASHINGTON POST INTERVIEWED ALL THE CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE BOARD ABOUT WHETHER FOCUS WOULD BE IF ELECTED.

EVERYONE MENTIONED DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION .

TWO OF YOU TOOK A STEP FURTHER AND SIGNALS -- SINGLED OUT BLACK AND BROWN STUDENTS.

I WAS STUNNED WHEN I READ THAT .

GRANTED, ASIAN-AMERICANS MAKE UP ONLY 6% OF THE ALEXANDRIA SCHOOL BODY , BUT WE HELD A MUCH HIGHER PERCENTAGE IN THIS COUNTRY, AND WE ARE NOT UNFAMILIAR WITH DISCRIMINATION, EITHER.

SINCE LAST FALL, THE TERM BLACK AND BROWN HAS BECOME THE DARLING OF PROSOCIAL AND MAINSTREAM MEDIA.

IT IS EVEN BEGINNING TO BE USED SYNONYMOUSLY WITH THE TERM MINORITY.

THIS EXCLUSIONARY MISAPPROPRIATION SETS A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT FOR A FEW EXTREMELY IMPORTANT REASONS.

ONE, ASIANS ARE THE FASTEST GROWING MINORITY IN THIS COUNTRY.

TWO, TOGETHER, ALL THE MINORITIES MAKE THE MAJORITY, AND THREE, ONLY BY STANDING TOGETHER WILL ALL MINORITIES REALIZE THE CHANGES WE WISH TO SEE HAPPEN.

THE END GOAL OF RACIAL EQUITY IN EDUCATION IS FOR PERSONS OF COLOR TO GAIN SEATS AT THE DECISION-MAKING TABLES OF AMERICA.

WHETHER THAT BE IN THE CLASSROOM, BOARDROOM, COURTROOM , CONGRESS, THE WHITE HOUSE.

I ASK THAT YOU BEAR THIS IN MIND WHEN THINKING OR SPEAKING ABOUT RACIAL EQUITY.

IF NOT FOR YOUR OWN SAKES, THAT CERTAINLY FOR THOSE OF THE STUDENTS IN YOUR CHARGE.

FIRST, LET ME START BY SHARING MY GRATITUDE FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THE OVERCROWDING AT PATRICK HENRY SCHOOL.

THE ADDITION OF A FIRST GRADE CLASS IS A CONSTRUCTIVE FIRST STEP, AND WE HAVE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION OF ITS POSITIVE IMPACT.

IT HAS REALLY HELPED.

SO, THANK YOU.

WITH THAT SAID, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE INACTION TO ALLEVIATE OVERCROWDING AFFECTING OF THE GREATS AT PATRICK HENRY AND AT OTHER SCHOOLS .

TO DATE, WELL-DEVELOPED PLAN TO ADDRESS OVERCROWDING HAS NOT BEEN PROVIDED.

AGAIN, WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE BIG IMPACT OF ADDING A FIRST GRADE CLASS IN CEASING THE KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT AT PATRICK HENRY.

BUT THIS IS NOT GO FAR ENOUGH.

A FULL-TIME TEACHER FOR THE NEW CLASS HAS NOT BEEN EMPLOYED .

INSTEAD, AN INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM ANOTHER CLASS TO LEAVE THAT NEW CLASS.

AND MOREOVER, WE DON'T HAVE THE PROMISED MONITORS TO AID THE KINDERGARTEN AND SECOND GRADE CLASSES.

AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THE STAFFING AGENCY THAT WE USE DOES NOT HAVE THE REQUESTED RESOURCES.

EVEN STILL, IT WOULD BE MORE BENEFICIAL TO STAFF THESE POSITIONS WITH CERTIFIED AND TRAINED IA'S INCIDENT MONITORS.

IT'S AKIN TO NEEDING A CERTIFIED PLUMBER TO STOP AN OVERFLOWING TOILET , BUT INSTEAD, THE PLUMBING AGENCY PROMISES TO SEND THE RECEPTIONIST TWO PICKS THE PROBLEM.

THE CAP FOR KINDERGARTEN USED TO BE 22 STUDENTS.

THIS YEAR, THE CAP IS 24 , AND CLASS SIZES HAVE BALLOONED TO GO 27 FOR KINDERGARTEN ALONE.

I URGE YOU TO USE THE COMMON SENSE TEST.

DOES ANYTHING OVER 24 5-YEAR-OLD STUDENTS SOUND MANAGEABLE WITHOUT THE

PROPERLY TRAINED RESOURCES? AND BY RESOURCES, I MEAN A TEACHER AND INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT.

SO, I ASK THAT MORE BE DONE TO HELP THE SITUATION.

IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO STOP AT THE ADDITION OF A NEW FIRST GRADE CLASS.

WE NEED IA'S , NOT MONITORS BUT WE NEED TO HIRE THESE IA'S, A PLAN TO HOW THESE IA'S SO THAT TEACHERS CAN SET THEIR EXPECTATIONS UP WHEN HELP OR RELIEF WILL COME .

AND WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT A LONG-TERM SOLUTION THROUGH REDISTRICTING SO THAN EXTERIOR , THIS DOES NOT CONTINUE TO NEGATIVELY IMPACT THE CHILDREN AND THE TEACHERS.

LASTLY, AS BOARD MEMBERS, YOU ARE OUR ELECTED CHANGE AGENTS .

WE NEED YOU GUYS TO CONTINUE TO ABIDE BY OUR BOYS IN THESE PUBLIC SESSIONS AND BY ASKING THOSE HARD QUESTIONS AND ENSURING THAT OUR CONCERNS ARE ADEQUATELY ADDRESSED.

MY NAME IS EMILY.

IT'S A SHORT ONE TONIGHT TO WHAT YOU FIRST START OFF WITH A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STATE CHAMPIONS, THE ACHS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM.

AS MOST OF YOU KNOW NOW, ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, THE TEAM TO SECOND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ALL THE WAY DOWN IN RICHMOND, AND DR. KAY-WYATT, MYSELF, VICE CHAIR GREENE WERE THERE TO VISIT.

THEY WERE ALSO HONORED THROUGHOUT CAMPUSES BY WALKING AROUND THEIR SCHOOL BAND.

I ALSO WANTED TO SHOUT OUT, LAST NIGHT I HAD THE HONOR OF ATTENDING THE ACHS SIGNING DAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES COMMITTED TO PLAY AND PURSUE THEIR ATHLETICS FOR COLLEGE AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF WITNESSING ALL FIVE YOUNG WOMEN ATHLETES AND AMAZINGLY TALENTED ATHLETES .

THE SPORTS INCLUDED DIVISION I SOCCER, SOFTBALL, VOLLEYBALL , AND ROWING.

I ALSO WANT TO SHOUT OUT OUR SWIM AND DIVE TEAM WHO RECENTLY BROUGHT HOME THE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP AND OUR TITAN DECCA STUDENTS WHO HAD COMPETITION AGAINST WACO HIGH SCHOOL AND WASHINGTON AND LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL, GETTING THE NUMBER ONE SPOT IN 17 OF 19 CATEGORIES, HAVING 23 SECOND AND THIRD PLACE WINNERS OVERALL.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

IT SETS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW GREAT STUDENTS COME OUT OF A CPS AND WHAT WE STRIVE FOR.

AS FAR AS THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, WE LIKE TO RECOGNIZE ANYTHING DR. JACK'S, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AND MS. WOODS , THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF STUDENT EQUITY , COMING IN AND MEETING WITH BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WHO REPRESENT THE TITAN LET'S COMMITTEE , TALKING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CO AND THE BEST WAY TO KEEP IMPLEMENTING IT AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL TOWARD STUDENTS.

WE HAD OUR FIRST MEETING NOVEMBER 15TH.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE 10 ACTIVE MEMBERS AND FOUR THAT ARE PENDING.

WE HAVE A CHAIR, VICE CHAIR, AND A SECRETARY.

AND OUR FIRST MEETING, WE REVIEWED AND APPROVED THE SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY BYLAWS AND MADE SIMILAR, THE CHANGES THAT WILL BE COMING TO YOU.

AND I WANT TO DO A SPECIAL THANK YOU AGAIN.
