MR. PASCAL AND I ARE HERE TO SUPPORT OUR TUCKER TIGERS AS THEY KICK OFF TUCKER'S FINEST, THE RETURN OF THE STUDENT LED BOARD PRESENTATIONS. THESE AMAZING TUCKER TIGERS HAVE WRITTEN THEIR OWN REFLECTIONS ON THEIR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF TUCKER ELEMENTARY.

AND WE HAVE FIFTH GRADER KINSEY MEAD TO KICK US OFF.

HUTCHINGS, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS AND THE VIEWING PUBLIC.

MY NAME IS KENZIE AHMED AND I AM A FIFTH GRADE STUDENT AT SAMUEL TUCKER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

TONIGHT, WE ARE HERE TO SHOW WHY TUCKER IS SUCH A GREAT PLACE.

THERE ARE TWO PROGRAMS THAT MY FRIENDS AND I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THIS EVENING.

THEY ARE OUR INTERCESSION PROGRAM AND LINK CLUB.

WHAT I HAVE ENJOYED MOST ABOUT MY TIME HERE AT TUCKER HAS BEEN OUR INTERSESSION PROGRAM.

DURING INTERSESSION, STUDENTS HAVE HAD FUN COURSES LIKE SAILING ON THE POTOMAC RIVER BRIDGE BUILDING AND SWIMMING.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE COURSES WAS CARVING PUMPKINS AND ACTUALLY MAKING PUMPKIN PIE AND CAKE, BUT MINE DIDN'T TURN OUT SO WELL.

IT WAS NICE TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER STUDENTS AND COMPLETE INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES.

IN THIS COURSE. I GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO FINE TUNE MY MATH AND SCIENCE SKILLS.

SOCCER IS ONE OF THE SCHOOLS WHERE YOU CAN ENJOY YOURSELF AND FEEL GOOD WITH THE SUPPORT OF A BUNCH OF TEACHERS, COUNSELORS AND OUR OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL, MR. PASCAL. HE HAS TAUGHT ME TO BE KIND AND MOST OF ALL HOW TO TREAT OTHERS.

THOSE ARE A FEW OF THE QUALITIES THAT PROPELLED HIM TO ACHIEVE VIRGINIA'S DISTINGUISHED PRINCIPAL AWARD.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK MY TEACHER, MR. WORTHINGTON. HE HAS GIVEN ME THE CONFIDENCE TO STAND HERE BEFORE YOU TODAY.

I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE LINC CLUB SINCE THE FIRST GRADE AND IN THE BEGINNING I WAS STRUGGLING WITH READING AND MATH.

BUT BECAUSE OF MY TEACHERS AND PARENTS, EXTRA HELP FROM THE CLUB.

HI. MY NAME IS HAMIDA AND I'M IN THE FIFTH GRADE AT TUCKER ELEMENTARY.

YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT TWO OF THE PROGRAMS THAT MAKE TUCKER SUCH A GREAT SCHOOL.

HOWEVER, THE REASON TUCKER IS SUCH A GREAT SCHOOL IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE EFFORT THAT COMES FROM OUR TEACHERS, PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS.

THEY HELP US GET ALL THE THINGS WE NEED TO HELP US LEARN AND GROW.

FOR EXAMPLE, ONE OF THE TEACHERS, MRS. CAMPBELL, SAW SOMETHING IN ME AND GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE A CORRESPONDENT ON THE TUCKER TODAY SHOW.

THIS EXPERIENCE HAS BUILT MY CONFIDENCE AND GIVEN ME THE COURAGE TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE, A SKILL I BELIEVE I WOULD NEED TO BE A SOFTWARE ENGINEER.

THESE STANDARDS DEFINE WHAT TEACHERS SHOULD KNOW AND BE ABLE TO DO AND INCLUDE RIGOROUS AND VALID ASSESSMENTS.

NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION IS THE MOST RESPECTED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION AVAILABLE IN EDUCATION, AND IT PROVIDES NUMEROUS BENEFITS TO TEACHERS, TO STUDENTS AND TO SCHOOLS.

IT WAS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP, RETAIN AND RECOGNIZE ACCOMPLISHED TEACHERS AS WELL AS TO GENERATE ONGOING NATIONWIDE IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOLS.

STUDIES. STUDIES HAVE ALSO SHOWN OR FOUND THAT THE POSITIVE EFFECT OF HAVING A BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER IS EVEN GREATER FOR MINORITY AND LOW INCOME STUDENTS.

BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS ARE LEADERS IN THEIR BUILDING AND THE DIVISION AND SERVE AS A MODEL OF REFLECTIVE, PASSIONATE, LIFELONG LEARNERS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING ALL OF OUR STUDENTS SUCCEED.

OUR FAMILIES ARE REPRESENTED BY BOTH DISTRICT B AND C.

AS AN ENGAGED PARENT, THOUGH, I FEEL A LITTLE FOOLISH BECAUSE I ASSUMED THAT CPS HAD EQUITABLE MAINTENANCE PLANS AND EQUITABLE BUDGETING FOR FUTURE RENOVATIONS ACROSS ALL THE FACILITIES.

THE EVENTS OF THESE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE REVEALED IT IS NOT BROKEN, MISSING AND DANGEROUS.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE ANYWHERE IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.

YET IT'S COMMONPLACE THAT JOHN ADAMS, THE MOST RECENT EQUIPMENT FAILURE.

THE FORCE LINKS BROKEN OVER SPRING BREAK RESULTED IN A LARGE RUSTED POLE SITTING IN THE PLAYGROUND FOR WEEKS UNTIL ITS ULTIMATELY REMOVAL OF ALL THE SWINGS.

BUT THE EXCUSES FOR WHY IT ISN'T REPLACED ARE REPREHENSIBLE.

HOW FAST ARE REPAIRS MADE AT OTHER SCHOOLS? WHY IS THERE NO FUNDING IN THE TEN YEAR CIP ALLOCATED TO SUPPORT OUR PLAY SPACES? SPACE IS HEAVILY USED NOT ONLY BY THE OVER 800 STUDENTS AT JOHN ADAMS, BUT ALSO FAMILIES FROM DAY RAMSEY AND REC PROGRAMS. IF THIS WERE ONLY ABOUT THE SWINGS, I WOULDN'T BE HERE.

THIS MONTH IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, AND WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE TIME TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK THAT THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION COALITION OF ALEXANDRA SACA IS DOING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF ALEXANDRIA AGAINST BEHAVIORS RELATED TO ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE AND AN ACP EXPRESS POST.

IT IS ESPECIALLY HIGHLIGHTED THAT REFERRALS FOR THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE CONCERNS FOR STUDENTS CAN BE MADE THROUGH THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR.

WE HAD WONDERFUL TITANS REPRESENTATIVES IN THE MEETING THROUGH THE FORM OF OUR THREE 60 ADVOCATES, WHERE THEY GAVE AN AMAZING PRESENTATION SHOWING THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY THEY DID OF THE HEM IN MIDDLE SCHOOLERS ABOUT SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION.

AND THEY ALSO GAVE THEIR OWN THOUGHTS ON WHY SEXUAL EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT.

WE HOPE THAT THIS SETS A STRONG PRESIDENT OF ALEXANDRIA TAKING THE TEACHING OF SEXUAL EDUCATION VERY SERIOUSLY, AND I'LL PASS IT ON TO EMILY.

IN CONCLUSION, MAY IS ALSO NATIONAL PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH, AND ECB'S IS HIGHLIGHTING PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS THAT HELP KEEP STUDENTS HEALTHY AND SAFE.

WE HAD MANY ORDERS GIVEN AT THE REGIONAL AND REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR FOR ACP STUDENTS, INCLUDING ONES FROM KING STREET CAMPUS, MINI HOWARD CAMPUS, GEORGE WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL, FRANCES HAMMOND AND JEFFERSON HOUSTON.

WE WANTED TO ESPECIALLY HIGHLIGHT MANY HOWARD CAMPUS STUDENT NATALIE BOWEN, WHO WILL BE MOVING ON TO THE STATE COMPETITION.

WE ALSO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND THANK ACPS COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT AND PR LIAISONS FOR SCHOOL COMMUNICATORS DAY, WHICH WAS ON MAY 13, AND STUDENTS, INCLUDING MYSELF AT THE KING STREET CAMPUS WHO WERE INVOLVED WITH THIS SCHOOL NEWSPAPER THING.

WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE A TOUR, INTERVIEW STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF, AND WRITE THREE ARTICLES ABOUT A SATELLITE CAMPUS LOCATED IN THIS VERY BUILDING IN ORDER TO FURTHER EDUCATE STUDENTS ABOUT OTHER CAMPUS SITES IN CONNECTION WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT AND OR CONNECTED HIGH SCHOOL NETWORK.

YOU'LL BE ABLE TO READ ALL THREE ARTICLES ON SI.COM AND IN THE PRINT EDITION NEXT WEEK.

THE SCHOOL BOARD, DUE TO NUMEROUS REQUESTS FROM THE COMMUNITY TO BASICALLY RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING ATHLETES IN THE ALEXANDRIA COMMUNITY THAT CAME THROUGH ACPS, WHICH LET ME TELL YOU, OUR NUMEROUS WE ARE BLESSED IN THIS COMMUNITY TO HAVE WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL ATHLETES THAT COME THROUGH OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM, SO MANY OF WHICH THAT WE HAVE THOUSANDS OF APPLICATIONS THAT COME IN EACH YEAR.

SO THAT SCHOOL BOARD, WHICH ACTUALLY MS..

BOOS WAS A PART OF THAT SCHOOL BOARD IN 2014, PUT TOGETHER THE ADVISORY HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE.

AND SINCE THEN WE HAVE INDUCTED 79 INDUCTEES STUDENT ATHLETES INTO INTO THE HALL OF FAME.

AND WE'RE EXCITED THAT THIS GO ROUND.

WE HAVE ABOUT 20 MORE THAT ARE COMING IN.

AND THEY DECIDED TO UP THE NUMBER THIS YEAR BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, WE DO HAVE A BACKLOG OF NOMINATIONS.

SO WE'RE TRYING TO DO CATCH UP FOR THE MANY YEARS THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE THIS COMMITTEE.

SO I'M GOING TO PASS IT OVER.

WE'LL BE ABLE TO SHARE SOME OF THE REVISIONS THAT OUR COMMITTEE HAS COME UP WITH.

HUTCHINGS MENTIONED, THIS PROCESS WAS PUT IN PLACE AT THE AT THE GENESIS OF THIS STRATEGIC PLAN TO REALLY SAY, WE KNOW IN ANY FIVE YEAR PLAN, UNDER THE GUISE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, WE WANT TO KEEP LOOKING, REFRESHING, REVISING AND MAKING SURE OUR PLAN IS RELEVANT AND MEETING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND STAKEHOLDERS AS WE GO THROUGH THE FIVE YEARS WITHIN THE PLAN.

WITH THAT SAID, WE DON'T EXPECT WHOLESALE CHANGES TO THE PLAN YEAR TO YEAR, CERTAINLY.

RIGHT. WE KNOW A LOT OF THE EFFORTS IDENTIFIED IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN OR MULTI-YEAR EFFORTS THAT HAVE TO BE SUSTAINED TO TRULY TAKE ROOT, BUT ALSO CERTAINLY MAKING SPACE FOR THOSE TWEAKS, THOSE REVISIONS, THOSE EDITS AS WE GO THROUGH THE PLAN.

SO A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE WILL TALK ABOUT.

BUT WE'LL TALK ABOUT TONIGHT.

WE'LL KIND OF GO THROUGH THE OVERVIEW AND FRAMEWORK OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN AS WELL AS THE IMPLEMENTATION STRUCTURE.

WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE REVISION PROCESS ITSELF, KIND OF WHAT THAT LOOKED LIKE, WHAT THE KEY TENETS WERE AND DRIVING THAT PROCESS.

AND THEN WE WILL HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE TYPES OF THE REVISIONS THAT ARE BEING PUT FORWARD FOR THE BOARD.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO GO LINE BY LINE THROUGH EVERY SINGLE REVISION, BUT CERTAINLY THE ATTACHMENT THAT YOU ALL RECEIVED IN YOUR BOARD MATERIALS FOR THE MEETING TONIGHT. THE SECOND ATTACHMENT HAS THE CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN AND THEN ANY REVISIONS OR SUGGESTED EDITS ARE THEN READ LINES WITHIN THAT DOCUMENT WITH COMMENT BOXES ON THE MARGINS.

SO YOU CAN SEE EXACTLY WHAT IS BEING SUGGESTED TO BE CHANGED AS WELL AS THE RATIONALE ASSOCIATED WITH THAT CHANGE.

SO JUST A REMINDER WITHIN THE EQUITY FOR ALL STRATEGIC PLAN, EVERYTHING WE DO WITHIN ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS CONTINUES TO HAVE RACIAL EQUITY AS OUR NORTH STAR AND AT THE HEART OF THE WORK THAT WE DO.

WITH RACIAL EQUITY AT THE HEART.

WE WANT TO LOOK AT THE STRUCTURE OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO WITHIN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, WE HAVE FIVE GOAL AREAS.

WITHIN EACH GOAL AREA, WE HAVE STRATEGIES THAT ARE KIND OF THE BIG BUCKETS OR AREAS WITHIN EACH GOAL THAT WE WANT TO LOOK AT AND AFFECT CHANGE IN WITHIN THE FIVE YEAR LIFE OF THE PLAN.

AND THEN UNDERNEATH EACH OF THOSE STRATEGIES, WE HAVE SOME HIGHLIGHTED ACTIONS THAT WILL ASSIST THAT STRATEGY IN MOVING FORWARD OVER THE LIFE OF THE PLAN.

IN TERMS OF OUR STRUCTURE FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLAN, EACH GOAL HAS A CHIEF WHO HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A GOAL LEADER AND THEN EACH STRATEGY HAS BOTH A INDIVIDUAL DEPARTMENT THAT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE POINT ON THAT SPECIFIC STRATEGY, AS WELL AS STRATEGY MANAGERS WITHIN MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS.

RIGHT, BECAUSE A LOT OF THESE EFFORTS ARE ACROSS A MULTITUDE OF DEPARTMENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE EFFORTS ARE CARRYING FORWARD EACH YEAR OF THE PLAN. SO WITH THAT, WE CAME TO THE BOARD IN MARCH TO LOOK AT AND WE'RE LOOKING AT THAT RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THIS SCREEN.

WE CAME TO THE BOARD IN MARCH TO LOOK AT THE KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS.

YOU REMEMBER OUR EQUITY DASHBOARD AND THAT DISCUSSION WE HAD THERE.

AND TONIGHT, IF YOU LOOK BELOW THE SCHOOL BOARD EMBLEM THERE, WE HAVE THE STRATEGIC PLAN ANNUAL REVIEW COMMITTEE WHO WE LOVINGLY REFER TO AS SPARC.

AND THAT IS THE WORK THAT WE'RE COMING TO TONIGHT IN TERMS OF OUR ANNUAL REVIEW PROCESS AND THE POTENTIAL REVISIONS THAT ARE BEING PUT FORWARD.

SO I JUST I HAVE TO START.

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY THANK YOU'S I HAVE FOR THIS COMMITTEE OF FOLKS.

THEY ARE A TREMENDOUS GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ANSWERED THE CALL TO TRULY LEAD IN THIS WORK AND DEDICATE THEIR TIME WHEN WE KNOW TIME IS A COMMODITY THAT REALLY NO ONE HAS TO GIVE.

AND SO WE WERE VERY PURPOSEFUL IN THE SELECTION OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN ANNUAL REVIEW COMMITTEE, BOTH IN TERMS OF LOCATIONS.

YOU'LL SEE VARIOUS LOCATIONS THERE AS WELL AS ROLES.

WE ALSO ARE VERY INTENTIONAL IN TERMS OF DIVERSITY, OF INDIVIDUALS, GENDER, ETC., TO MAKE SURE WE ARE BRINGING AS MANY PERSPECTIVE AS POSSIBLE TO THE TABLE THROUGH THE SPARC COMMITTEE.

SO A HUGE THANK YOU TO GO OUT TO OUR INDIVIDUALS WHO PARTICIPATED IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN ANNUAL REVIEW COMMITTEE, AS WELL AS THE TWO MEMBERS OF MY TEAM WHO REALLY DID LEAD THIS WORK.

YOU KNOW, I'M KIND OF THE TALKING HEAD HERE TONIGHT TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH YOU, BUT NONE OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITHOUT TINA CONSTANTINE OR DR.

AMBER EBY ON MY TEAM, WHO REALLY SPEARHEADED THIS WORK AND DID A LOT OF BEHIND THE SCENES TO MAKE ALL OF THIS COME TO FRUITION. SO AS DR.

HUTCHINGS MENTIONED, REALLY A KEY DRIVER FOR US IN THE EQUITY FOR ALL PLAN IS TO ENSURE THAT THIS IS A LIVING, BREATHING DOCUMENT.

THIS IS NOT A DOCUMENT THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE IN THE BINDER THAT'S GOING TO GET DUSTED OFF FIVE YEARS FROM NOW.

AND WE'RE GOING TO GO, WELL, HOW DID WE DO? RIGHT. THIS IS SOMETHING WE ARE REALLY INVESTED IN AND TRULY ENGAGED IN ON A DAY TO DAY, WEEK TO WEEK, MONTH TO MONTH BASIS.

SO AS A PART OF THAT, WE HAVE THE ANNUAL REVISION PROCESS, WHICH WE'LL TALK ABOUT TONIGHT.

WE ALSO HAVE THE MONITORING AND MEASUREMENT WHICH WE HIGHLIGHTED AND TALKED ABOUT FROM OUR CONVERSATION IN MARCH AND OUR KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AND OUR EQUITY DASHBOARD. WE ALSO HAVE AN UNDERSTAND THAT WHAT WE DO WITHIN THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT IS HOW WE GO ABOUT DOING THAT.

AND THAT'S WHY WE KNOW WE HAVE TO LEAN INTO OUR CORE VALUES AS AN ORGANIZATION AND HOW WE BEHAVE AND OPERATE ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS TO BE BEST IN SERVICE TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT CORE VALUES ALONE ARE NOT ENOUGH.

WE HAVE TO IDENTIFY AND BE SPECIFIC AROUND THOSE BEHAVIORS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH EACH WITH EACH OF THOSE CORE VALUES.

SO TO DO SOME OF THAT WORK, WE'VE BEEN SEEKING INPUT AND VOICES FROM STUDENTS AT THE ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL REALLY TO UNDERSTAND FOR THEM WHAT EACH CORE VALUE BOTH LOOKS LIKE AND SOUNDS LIKE WITH THE GOAL OF IDENTIFYING SPECIFIC BEHAVIORS AS AN ORGANIZATION THAT WE EXPECT WITHIN EACH OF THOSE CORE VALUES IN TERMS OF SEEING AND HEARING, WE ALSO KNOW, AGAIN, WITH RACIAL EQUITY IS OUR NORTH STAR WITHIN THE STRATEGIC PLAN, MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF OUR PROCESSES, BOTH IN TERMS OF OUR IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS, OUR BUDGET EFFORTS, OUR EVALUATION EFFORTS, ALIGN WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN TO GET US TO THAT PURPOSEFUL ACTION AND OUTCOMES THAT WE AIM FOR.

SO A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE REVISION PROCESS.

THE REVISION PROCESS INVOLVES BOTH THE STRATEGIC PLAN ANNUAL REVIEW COMMITTEE, AS WELL AS THE GOAL LEADERS AND THE STRATEGY MANAGERS COMING TOGETHER.

AND IT'S A FOUR PHASE PROCESS.

THE FIRST PHASE, WE BRING EVERYONE TOGETHER TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE PLAN, HOW IT SITS NOW, WHAT OUR DATA ARE SHOWING US IN TERMS OF OUR KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AND WHAT WE'RE THINKING POTENTIALLY AS INDIVIDUALS MIGHT BE SOME POTENTIAL AREAS OF DISCUSSION.

WE THEN GO THROUGH A CREATION PHASE, WHICH IS A VIRTUAL REVISION WORKSHOP WHERE EVERYONE COMES TOGETHER AND BEGINS BRAINSTORMING AND DISCUSSING POTENTIAL REVISIONS WITHIN THEIR

RESPECTIVE AREAS.

AND THEN WE GO THROUGH A REFINEMENT WHERE WE'RE SENDING OUT THE POTENTIAL REVISIONS.

THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR REVIEW AND FEEDBACK AND FINALIZATION PRIOR TO THE DELIVERABLE TO THE BOARD, WHICH IS WHERE WE ARE THIS EVENING.

SO THAT IS OUR OVERALL PROCESS.

AND FOR THIS YEAR, OUR KEY AREAS OF FOCUS, WE'RE REALLY CONTINUING TO FOCUS ON EQUITY AS WELL AS CONTINUING TO FOCUS ON PANDEMIC RECOVERY.

THAT WAS THE FRAME IN WHICH WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STRATEGIC PLAN WAS BEING RESPONSIVE IN THOSE TWO AREAS AND THAT WE'RE CONTINUING TO FINE TUNE AND ADJUST WHERE NEEDED WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WE DON'T EXPECT, AGAIN, KIND OF A WHOLESALE CHANGE, BUT WHERE CAN WE KIND OF FINE TUNE AND CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OUR STRATEGIC PLAN TO MEET THOSE AREAS? SO JUST SOME HIGHLIGHTS AND SOME EXAMPLES OF WHAT THOSE PROPOSED REVISIONS LOOK LIKE FROM AN EQUITY FOCUSED STANCE.

I TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS IN A PREVIOUS SLIDE, BUT ADDING AN ACTION SPECIFIC TO PRIORITIZING THOSE BEHAVIORS ALIGNED WITH EACH CORE VALUE TO MAKE SURE FROM AN EQUITY FRAME WE ARE MEETING EACH STUDENT WHERE THEY ARE AND MEETING THEIR NEEDS AND ALIGNING THAT WITH OUR CORE VALUES.

WE ALSO HAD AN UPDATE AROUND A STRATEGY AROUND RESOURCE ALLOCATION TO CLARIFY THAT THAT WAS AN EQUITY BASED STRATEGY.

SOME OF THE LANGUAGE WAS A LITTLE I GUESS, A LITTLE NEBULOUS IN THAT SENSE.

SO THE COMMITTEE WANTED TO MAKE THAT EXPLICIT AS WELL AS WITHIN THE FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GOAL AREA, ADDED A SPECIFIC ACTION WITHIN A STRATEGY AROUND PARTNERING WITH FAMILIES THAT REALLY HONED IN AND MADE EXPLICIT THAT WE UNDERSTAND THAT IN PARTNERING WITH FAMILIES, THIS IS INHERENTLY A RELATIONSHIPS BASED BUSINESS, RIGHT? SO IN PARTNERING WITH FAMILIES, WE KNOW THAT THAT IS HOW ARE WE GARNERING THOSE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS TO CONTINUE TO WORK AS PARTNERS IN THE EDUCATION OF THEIR STUDENTS? SOME EXAMPLES OF SOME PANDEMIC RECOVERY FOCUS PROVISIONS.

THE STRATEGIC PLAN HAD SPECIFIED THE K TO TWO LITERACY TASK FORCE AND THAT THAT HAD BEEN EXPANDED TO COLLABORATE AND IMPLEMENT BEST LITERACY PRACTICES ACROSS THE ELEMENTARY GRADE SPAN.

SO EXPANDING THAT FROM K TO TWO TO BE ENCOMPASSING OF ALL THE ELEMENTARY GRADE LEVELS K THROUGH FIVE, WANTING TO DRIVE HOME THE CLEAR POINT AND VALUE IN OUR SEAL INSTRUCTION, ESPECIALLY IN THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLNESS AT TIER ONE.

ALL RIGHT. SO WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE IN EVERY DAY IN CLASSROOMS AT TIER ONE AROUND THAT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLNESS, AS WELL AS THE ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION, ALSO HIGHLIGHTING SOME OF OUR LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE PANDEMIC, WHICH IS WE CAN HAVE MULTIPLE MODALITIES AND HOW WE ENGAGE FOLKS.

SO OFFERING COMMUNITY EVENTS BOTH IN-PERSON AND VIRTUALLY TO MEET NEEDS AND SCHEDULES AND TIMING FOR FAMILIES.

AND THEN ITEMS WERE UPDATED WITH MORE SPECIFICITY, MORE SPECIFICITY THAT WORD AND INCLUSIVITY AS WELL AS LANGUAGE THAT IS EASIER TO UNDERSTAND BUT AT TIMES HARDER TO SAY SPECIFICITY AND INCLUSIVITY.

SO WE ARE CONTINUING TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE PROVIDING THOSE RESTORATIVE PRACTICES.

I HAVE TO SAY, I WAS I MET WITH MY STUDENT ADVISORY GROUP THIS WEEK AND I ASKED SPECIFICALLY HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN A PART OF A COMMUNITY CIRCLE IN YOUR CLASS? MANY OF THEM HAVE NOT.

AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR, THE EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WILL THEN SEND THE SUPPORTS THAT ARE STUDENT SPECIFIC, SUCH AS MANIPULATIVES, INTERVENTIONS, MESSAGE BOARDS, ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS ARE SENT FORWARD TO THE RECEIVING SCHOOL, THE BEHAVIOR CHARTS, THE VISUALS, ALL THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.

THEN IN THE FALL, WHEN THE CHILDREN ARRIVE IN KINDERGARTEN, A SPECIALIST WILL WORK WITH THAT RISING KINDERGARTEN CITYWIDE CLASSROOM TEACHER TO ENSURE THAT THERE'S A SMOOTH TRANSITION. STUDENTS IN THE CITYWIDE PROGRAM DO NOT TYPICALLY ATTEND THE STEP UP PROGRAM DUE TO THE LOW NUMBERS OF INDIVIDUAL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS IN CITYWIDE CLASSES AT EACH SCHOOL.

EACH SCHOOL MIGHT MAYBE RECEIVE ONE OR TWO KINDERGARTNERS EACH YEAR.

SO WHAT WE'LL DO AS AN ALTERNATIVE, THE CITYWIDE STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH TWO OPEN HOUSE OPPORTUNITIES THE WEEK BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, DURING WHICH THE FAMILY AND CHILD ARE ABLE TO SPEND ABOUT AN HOUR IN THE CLASSROOM AT THEIR ASSIGNED SCHOOL.

THEY EXPLORE THE NEW THINGS IN THE CLASSROOM, THEY INTERACT WITH THE CITYWIDE STAFF, AND THEY'RE ABLE TO GET A REAL, AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE IN THEIR CLASSROOM DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE TRANSITIONAL NEEDS.

THIS OPPORTUNITY WAS REALLY SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE LOW DEMAND, HIGH REINFORCING INTERACTIONS SO THAT THE CHILDREN HAVE A VERY POSITIVE, ENGAGING EXPERIENCE IN THEIR NEW CLASSROOMS. AND THEY CAN FOSTER POSITIVE ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE NEW CLASSROOM AND WITH A NEW CITYWIDE TEAM AT THEIR SCHOOL.

SO WE HAVE A VERY DELIBERATE AND EXPLICIT PROCESS, AND WE REALLY FOCUS VERY CLOSELY ON THE NEEDS OF THESE STUDENTS AS THEY TRANSITION INTO KINDERGARTEN.

AND I WANT TO JUST MAKE THAT CONNECTION SO THAT PEOPLE, THE BOARD AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY CAN UNDERSTAND THIS WASN'T SOMETHING THAT JUST HAPPENED. SO ONE THING I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IS SOME.

AND YOU GET SORT OF CONFLICTING.

RESULTS. SO THAT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT DURING THIS DISCUSSION.

AND AS WE ARE DOING, WE'RE DOING SO MUCH WORK RIGHT NOW ON LIKE WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT AND THE MATH STANDARDS.

AND IT SEEMED LIKE AN OPPORTUNE TIME FOR US TO PULL ALL OF THIS TOGETHER IN A REALLY TIGHT, LIKE A CURRICULUM FOR EVERY SINGLE GRADE LEVEL.

I ALSO JUST WANT TO POINT OUT THAT UNFORTUNATELY, THE NEW ADMINISTRATION, THEY TOOK THE NAVIGATING EQUITY VIRGINIA OFF OF OUR WEBSITE.

IN DECEMBER OF LAST YEAR, THE SCHOOL BOARD FORMALLY APPROVED THE FORMATION OF THREE LANGUAGE FOCUSED ADVISORY COMMITTEES IN SPANISH, ARABIC AND PAK IN ORDER TO ELEVATE THE VOICES OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO SPEAK THOSE LANGUAGES AND ENABLE THEM TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS AND PERSPECTIVES DIRECTLY WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.

TONIGHT, I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THIS FAMILY AND COMMUNICATION CENTER, THESE COMMITTEES WILL OFFICIALLY BE LAUNCHING AT THE START OF THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. THE COMMITTEES WILL BE COMPRISED OF ALEXANDRIANS FROM THESE THREE LANGUAGE COMMUNITIES.

LINKS TO THE APPLICATION FOR THESE COMMITTEES WILL APPEAR IN THE JUNE 10TH ISSUE OF ACCESS EXPRESS, AND WE INVITE THOSE FROM THE SPANISH, ARABIC AND PA SPEAKING COMMUNITIES TO APPLY. MEETINGS WILL OCCUR ON AT LEAST A QUARTERLY BASIS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR.
