JANUARY 11.

THIS IS THE TALENTED AND GIFTED ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING.

OKAY.

WELL, I STARTED, THINK WE'VE GOT MOST EVERYONE.

AND I KNOW CHRIS WAS GOING TO JOIN US.

DEFINITELY.

[1. Agenda for the January 11, 2021 Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting (Part 1 of 2) ]

SO JUST A COUPLE OF OPENING REMARKS.

THE FIRST IS I THINK THIS WILL BE OUR I'D LIKE IT TO BE, YOU KNOW, RELATIVELY QUICK MEETING, I THINK, YOU KNOW, WE'VE BEEN EXTREMELY DILIGENT AND DOING A LOT OF WORK ON THIS COMMITTEE DOUBLED UP IN DECEMBER, WE HAD INTENDED TO GO OVER THE INDICATORS THIS MONTH, BUT THAT IS BEING HELD BACK UNTIL THE NEW DIRECTOR OF TALENTED AND GIFTED COMES ON BOARD.

BECAUSE WHEN CLINT COMES TO OUR MEETING, HE WANTS THAT NEW PERSON IN PLACE.

SO THAT WILL, WHEN WE ALREADY HAVE A GUEST SPEAKER SCHEDULED FOR NEXT FEBRUARY, KRISHNA LEYVA FROM THE FACE CENTER.

SO I'M THINKING THE INDICATORS, THEY'LL PROBABLY WE'LL PROBABLY HAVE THAT HOPEFULLY IN THE MARCH MEETING, I GUESS IT KIND OF DEPENDS.

AND TIANA CAN KEEP US UPDATED ON THAT.

SO ANYWAYS SO THERE'S JUST, YOU KNOW, A HANDFUL OF THINGS TO GET THROUGH JUST ANOTHER, I GUESS, SORT OF UPDATE IS THAT I THINK I HAVE MY TIMING RIGHT ON THIS.

I THINK OUR LAST MEETING, I TOLD YOU ALL THAT I WAS GOING TO BE PRESENTING TO PTAK, WHICH I DID.

AND THEN I SUBSEQUENTLY ALSO SPOKE WITH SOME PEOPLE OVER AT GW WHO ARE ACTIVELY WORKING ON ADDRESSING THE EQUITY ISSUES AND THE DISPROPORTIONALITY IN CLASSES, PARTICULARLY AT GW.

AND SO OUT OF THOSE MEETINGS, ONE THING IS THE PTA PRESIDENT AT TUCKER WAS VERY ENGAGED, AND SAID HE WOULD SEND A REP TO OUR COMMITTEE.

AND SO WE HAVE HAD SOME FOLLOW UP CONVERSATION AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS MONTH.

AND HE IS HOPEFUL THAT HE CAN FIND SOMEONE SO I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT POSSIBILITY.

I THINK THAT WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE COMMITTEE.

SO WE'LL SEE WHO HE CAN FIND.

AND I DID GET AN UPDATE FROM DR. MANN, THAT THE SCOPE OF WORK THAT WE RESUBMITTED WAS APPROVED BY THE BOARD.

SO THAT'S DONE.

I'M GOING TO REFERENCE THAT A LITTLE BIT LATER IN OUR MEETING.

BUT I THINK FOR THE MOST PART, THOSE ARE MY UPDATES.

AND I HAD ASKED TIANA TO GIVE US A LITTLE BIT OF AN UPDATE ON YOUNG SCHOLARS JUST BASED ON SOME STUFF THAT I WAS HEARING, BUT JUST IN GENERAL, BECAUSE IT'S ONE OF OUR AREAS THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE MONITORING THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR AND GIVE FEEDBACK TO THE SCHOOL BOARD ON WAS JUST HOW THE ROLLOUTS GOING, HOW YOUNG SCHOLARS AND ALL OF THE OTHER GIA SUBJECT SPECIFIC HOW THOSE PROGRAMS ARE GOING.

SO I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TIANA AND SEE IF SHE HAS ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SHE WANTS TO SHARE WITH US AS WELL.

WELL, OKAY, HELLO, EVERYBODY, HOW ARE WE DOING? SO, HERE ARE MY UPDATES FOR YOUNG SCHOLARS.

SO THE LESSONS, I UNDERSTAND WE HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WAY IN WHICH THE LESSONS ARE BEING DELIVERED.

SO THE LESSONS ARE BEING DELIVERED AT DIFFERENT SCHOOLS IN VARIOUS WAYS.

WHAT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND IS THAT THE YOUNG SCHOLARS BE CLUSTERED

WITH THE GIA KIDS, >> AND THAT CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF IS DELIVERED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.

IN SOME SCHOOLS IT IS THAT WAY.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TLGS A DOCUMENT THAT I SEND OUT THE PRINCIPALS AND WHAT I DID WAS COMPRISE SOME OF THE DIFFERENT THINGS BEING DONE.

IT'S ALL BASICALLY A PRINCE PATHOLOGIST -- I CAN GIVE A RECOMMENDATION BUT THEY HAVE THE FINAL SAY ON HOW THEY WANT THE YOUNG SCHOLARS TO BE SERVICED IN THEIR BUILDING.

WHEN WE'RE IN SCHOOLS DUE TO VIRTUAL A HIGHER NUMBER OF THEM ARE PULLED OUT.

DURING THE IE, INTERVENTION BLOCK.

SOME ARE STILL CLUSTERED WITH GIA VIRTUALLY.

WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DURATION, THE MAJORITY OF SCHOOLS ARE MEET, THE SCHOLARS ONE OR TWO TIMES A WEEK.

MOST SERVICES ARE BEING PROVIDED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.

THERE ARE INSTANCES WHERE A TAG TEACHER IS PROVIDING DIRECT SERVICES TO THE SCHOLARS.

THIS YEAR, WE HAVE COMPLETED WHAT IS OUR EXPANSION EFFORT.

[00:05:03]

THE YOUNG SCHOLAR IS CURRENTLY AT EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THAT WAS A BIG PART OF MY WORING FOR A WHILE.

GETTING IT INTO THE SCHOOLS.

MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW WE IDENTIFY WHY YOU FEEL THIS IS IMPORTANT.

SO NOW THE NEXT PHASE OF MY WORK IS GOING TO BE A DOCUMENTATION PIECE.

WHEN A PERSON ASKS HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY'RE BEING DIFFERENTIATED, THERE'S NOT AN ACCOUNTABILITY TOOL THERE AND PRIOR, YOU KNOW, PRINCIPALS WERE AND TEACHERS WERE OVERWHELMED BUT NOW WE HAVE THAT DOWN PAT.

THERE HAS TO BE SOME SORT OF DIFFERENTIATED PLAN THAT'S GOING TO SERVE AS AN ACCOUNTABILITY TOOL SO THAT WHEN WE PARENTS WHOEVER ASKS WELL HOW DO I KNOW YOU'RE DIFFERENTIATING FOR MY KID.

SOMEBODY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SHOW THEM PAPER AND SAY HERE'S HOW YOU KNOW AND THIS IS WHAT IS BEING DONE.

THAT'S THE NEXT PHASE OF MY WORK MOVING FORWARD.

ARE YOU SPECIFICALLY TALKING IN REFERENCE TO THE YOUNG SCHOLARS?

>> YES.

YOUNG SCHOLARS.

>> OKAY.

I MEAN I THINK THAT'S GOOD.

I WILL SAY MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE GIAK THROUGH 3 I MEAN EVEN THOUGH WE GET A DEP, LIKE, THAT -- IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY PROVIDE VERY MUCH INFORMATION AND IT'S ONLY IF -- IT'S ONLY WHAT -- AND IT'S, AGAIN, GOING TO DEPEND SCHOOL TO SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL ADDRESSED DIFFERENTLY.

BUT ANY ADDITIONAL DIFFERENT YEGGS THAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM, THAT'S NEVER ARTICULATED.

>> AND SO MAYBE SO -- RIGHT.

SO THIS UPDATE WAS JUST FOR YOUNG SCHOLARS BUT I'M GLAD YOU SAID THAT.

MAYBE AS WE MOVE FORWARD THIS YEAR WE CAN TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE DEP DOCUMENT AND MAYBE SEE HOW WE CAN REVISE THAT DOCUMENT FOR IT TO GIVE US MORE COMPLE HENCIVE INFORMATION.

>> YEAH.

I MEAN, IT SEEMS LIKE WE COULD KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE THAT WE COULD USE A SIMILAR BASICALLY SHOULD BE THE SAME FORMAT WHETHER YOU'RE IN GIA, YOUNG SCHOLARS, I MEAN, TO SOME DEGREE SOME SUBJECT SPECIFIC I MEAN THERE ARE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS THAT ARE SUBJECT SPECIFIC FOR SCIENCE OR HISTORY NOT A LOT BUT AS THOSE -- SO HOPEFULLY WE CAN DO SOMETHING THAT'S MORE UNIFORM AND CONSISTENT SO I MEAN I'M GLAD THAT OBVIOUSLY YOU RECOGNIZE THE ACCOUNTABILITY.

I THINK WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THAT RAY WILL THE ON THE COMMITTEE.

SO I APPRECIATE THAT UPDATE.

ANY FEEDBACK IN THE PRINCIPALS OR THE TEACHERS THAT ARE LAUNCHING IN THE FOUR NEW SCHOOLS.

>> MORE JUST THE NEW SCHOOLS.

SINCE THEY'VE HAD TO LAUNCH THIS PROGRAM 234 A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT.

>> IT'S A CHALLENGE.

THEY'VE BEEN WORKING WITH ME A WILL THE AS WE GO THROUGH THE STEPS IN THE WAY WE IDENTIFY AND THE THOROUGHNESS BY WHICH WE IDENTIFY IN THE BUILDING, IT'S NOT AT THE SAME LEVEL VIRTUALLY.

SOME PAPERWORK HAS BEEN CONDENSED A BIT.

I'VE HAD TO MERGE SOME OF ITS PROCESSES WITH THAT OF TAG VIRTUAL SO THAT TEACHERS ARE NOT TOO OVERWHELMED.

IT'S A CHALLENGE BECAUSE MOST OF THESE TEACHERS HAVE NEVER SEEN THEIR KIDS IN PERSON AND IT'S HARD TO IDENTIFY ADVANCED BEHAVIORS OVER A COMPUTER BECAUSE A LOT OF THINGS, OUR LOCUST OF CONTROL, WE DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THE KIDS ARE REALLY DOING ALL OF THEIR OWN WORK.

WE JUST DON'T KNOW.

GAVE THE ORIENTATION SESSION TO OUR GIA STRUBLTHER AND ALTHOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN CHALLENGES, I CAN SAY I SAT IN ON A FIRST GRATED PLC TODAY WHERE KELLY WAS

[00:10:05]

TALKING ABOUT YOUNG SCHOLARS AND THE TEACHERS AT TUCKER HAVE BEEN VERY RECEPTIVE.

WE'RE ONE ON THE PHONE THE LAST SCHOOLS TO COME ON BOARD.

BUT IT'S A MUCH NEEDED ADDITION TO THE FULL SLATE OF GIFTED AND TALENTED SERVICES SO THE CHALLENGES ARE THERE WITH EVERYTHING WE DO EVERY DAY BUT I THINK THE MINDSET AND THANKS TO TIANA, FOR BEING SO POSITIVE, AND JUST SO OUTSTANDING IN HER LEADERSHIP IN PROMOTING THIS THAT I JUST HAVE ONLY POSITIVE THINGS TO REPORT SOMETIMES.

PHONE IT'S MINIMIZED, I HOPE SO.

EVEN IF IT'S LESS IF WE CAN JUST DO SOMETHING BUT I DON'T KNOW YET.

I HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY WORD YET ON WHAT WE'RE ALLOWED TO DO.

I'M AS IT STANDS I'M MAKING SURE THAT WHATEVER IS BUDGETED FOR SUMMER THAT I DON'T TOUCH IT.

THAT'S MY HOPE.

WE'LL SEE.

>> OKAY.

>> ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A QUESTION?

>> YES.

I DO HAVE A QUESTION.

MY QUESTION IS YOUNG SCHOLAR, HOW MANY SCHOOL IN THE WEST END ADOPT YOUNG SCHOLAR? HOW ARE THEY DOING?

>> TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THEY'RE DOING FINE IF THE WE HAVE A CURRICULUM THAT TEACHERS HAVE NOW WHEN THEY'RE DIFFERENTIATING.

THEY HAVE OPTIONS NOW.

SOME TEACHERS ARE STILL USING IT.

I'M STILL ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL TRYING TO GET MORE PEOPLE TO USE IT.

THEY'RE GIA YOUNG SCHOLAR TEACHER MEETINGS.

IT'S A BIT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL THING I'M DOING HERE BUT IT'S MY WAY OF EVERY MEETING I'M GOING TO FEATURE A DIFFERENT RESOURCE.

PART OF THE GIAYS CURRICULUM.

AND IT'S MY PLUG TO GET TEACHERS MORE ACCLIMATED TO WHAT I HAVE ON CAMPUS.

I DID A WEBINAR WITH A BASIC SUMMARY OF EVERYTHING THAT'S THERE AND NOW THE TEACHER MEETINGS ARE VOLUNTARY.

THEY CAN SHOW UP IN EVERY SESSION I'M GOING TO DO A DIFFERENT PD FROM CANVAS AND THOSE RESOURCES FEATURED IN THE WEBINAR.

AND SO I'M JUST TRYING TO FIND DIFFERENT CREATIVE WAYS.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY THAT HAPPENED?

>> 2456S NOT VERY SURPRISING TO ME THAT YOU SAID JOHN ADAMS BECAUSE AT JOHN ADAMS WE HAVE A FABULOUS CONTACT WHO IS ALSO AN INSTRUCTION ISSAL COACH AND SHE'S MASTERFUL AT WHAT SHE DOES.

SHE HELPS ME COPRESENT AT MY LAST YOUNG SCHOLARS MEETING BECAUSE I MEET WITH THE CONTACTS MONTHLY AND IT'S NOT JUST A CHECK IN MEETING OR A GRIPE SESSION.

WE TRAIN.

SOMETIMES IT'S A WORK SESSION.

WE HANDLE THE BUSINESS OF YOUNG SCHOLARS.

SO HOW IS IT GOING THERE? WELL, SHE IS HANDLING IDENTIFICATION CURRENTLY AT THIS TIME.

SHE HAS A LIST OF EVERY YOUNG SCHOLAR STUDENT IN THE BUILDING.

[00:15:08]

WORKING DIRECTLY WITH TEACHERS TO ENSURE THEIR SERVICES AND SHE'S ACTUALLY THE ONE THAT CONSTANTLY KEEPS REMINDING ME YOU'RE IN ALL THE SCHOOLS NOW.

WE GOT TO START WORKING TOGETHER ON THE DOCUMENTATION PIECE.

SOMETHING THAT'S DEP LIKE THAT'S GOING TO HOLD TEACHERS ACCOUNTABLE AND SOMETHING THAT THE PRINCIPLES WILL FEEL GOOD ABOUT HELPING US INDOORS.

PEOPLE WILL SUPPORT IT.

SO -- >> ONE THING I WOULD SAY IS NEXT MONTH WHEN WE SPEAK WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE FACE CENTER, I'M HOPING I MIGHT BE WRONG.

COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS AND STUDENT.

I DON'T THINK FACE CENTER IS THE ONE.

I'M JUST FROM WHAT I'M UNDERSTANDING YOU CAN CORRECT ME.

>> I'M HOPING WE CAN EDUCATE THE 350E78 AT THE FACE CENTER ABOUT THE PROGRAMS. I MEAN SO THAT THEY'RE AWE'RE OF THEM.

HOW I'M GOING TO -- I KNOW WITH STAFF THERE'S A FORM TO FILL IT OUT FOR A TAG PROGRAM BUT FOR YOUNG SCHOLARS, HOW ARE THEY GOING TO APPLY FOR IT?

>> YOU CAN'T.

SO THIS IS NOT BASED ON PARENT REFERRAL.

IT DOESN'T WORK THE WAY TALENTED AND GIFTED HAS.

F JUST NOT REALISTIC BECAUSE TEACHERS WOULD HAVE TAG REFERRALS COMING AT THEM OR DESIGNEES AS WELL AS YOUNG SCHOLARS REFERRALS.

PLUS BECAUSE WE DON'T AWIDE BY TEST SCORES IT'S MORE OF A WHOLISTIC PROCESS.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT OCCURS IN HOUSE.

I MEAN WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE WAY WE HAVE IT STRUCTURED, THAT'S WHAT IS FEASIBLE.

[00:20:03]

AT THIS TIME.

NOW I WILL SAY THIS.

YOU THERE HAVE BEEN INSTANCES WHERE A PARENT IN ANOTHER GRADE LEVEL BUT I DID DO A LITTLE BIT OF THINKING ABOUT SOME NEXT STEPS FOR THE COMMITTEE ALONG THE LINES OF WHAT YOU WERE SUGGESTING, LAURA.

AND I THINK ONE OF THE STARTING POINTS WOULD BE PROBABLY TO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH DR. CRAWFORD AND OBVIOUSLY SHE'S VERY INVOLVED IN THE MENTAL HEALTH AND COUNSELING AND THE ENTIRE DIVISION AND I THINK IT WOULD BE WORTH HAVING A KFRLGS WITH HER TO SAY, LOOK, YOU KNOW, TO THE POINT YOU JUST MADE THERE REASONABLY PRUDENT PERSON MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS WITH OUR STUDENTS TAKING ADVANCED CLASSES.

THE COUNSELING PIECE IS A HUGE PRIORITY AND IT'S SOMETHING WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT.

WHERE THINGS MIGHT STAND WITH THAT.

>> YEAH.

YOU KNOW, THE GENERAL THERE'S GOING TO BE SIGNIFICANT CUTS THIS YEAR.

THAT'S THE REAL ISSUE AT AND SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO UNFORTUNATELY FROM A STAFFING PERSPECTIVE, THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A LOT OF CUTS BUT THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME CUTTING THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR AND SO WE JUST ALL HAVE TO BE KIND OF PREPARED FOR THAT BUT I WILL DEFINITELY RAISE THE ISSUE

[00:25:25]

OF COUNSELING FOR TAG AND JUST TRY TO ELEVATE THAT ISSUE AND AT A MINIMUM I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE THAT MEETING WITH DR. CRAWFORD AND JUST CONTINUE TO PUSH IT.

SUCH THAT WE CAN STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN GOING BACK TO SCHOOL IN PERSON BUT DOING SO SAFELY BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY NOT BEING IN PERSON CONTRIBUTES TO SOME OF THESE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT HERE.

>> ANY COMMENTS?

>> YES.

I HAVE A COMMENT.

IT'S NOT A COMMENT ACTUALLY.

I'VE SEEN THE BUDGET AND READ IT AND I'VE SEEN THE 500,000 ALLOCATED FOR THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WHICH IS REALLY GOOD.

YETS, I DID SEND EMAILS ANTICIPATE TALK ABOUT IT AS WELL LAST MONTH.

I WAS GOING TO COME THIS MONTH AS WELL TO TALK ABOUT A LITTLE BIT AS WELL.

HOW REALLY IMPORTANT FOR A STUDENT AND SO IT'S NOT ONLY FOR TAG STUDENT.

IT'S NOT ONLY FOR ADVANCED STUDENT.

EVEN KIDS WHO DOESN'T HAVE VOICE WITH YOU REALLY NEED A PERSON TO RAISE THIS ISSUE.

I KEEP PUSHING THIS BECAUSE I'VE SEEN FOURTH GRADE, FIFTH STUDENTS TRYING TO KILL THEMSELVES THIS YEAR WHEN I HEARD THAT, IT'S BREAKING MY HEART BECAUSE THEY'RE LITTLE KIDS.

THEY NEED HELP.

THEY NEED OUR HELP.

SO I'M JUST PUSHING FOR THAT.

I THINK -- I AM BEGGING THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THEN WHOEVER THE LEADERSHIP TO FOCUS, TO HAVE THAT COUNSELOR, THAT SUPPORT FOR THE STUDENTS.

[00:30:01]

THAT'S MY COMMENT.

YEAH.

AND I APPRECIATE THAT.

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, OUR FIRST WORK SESSION ON THE BUDGET WE'RE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THE UBE IS STANCE OF THE BUDGET IS ON THURSDAY.

AND DURING THAT, TWO ISSUES THAT I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT BOTH ON MY OWN PERSONAL REFLECTIONS AND BASED ON THIS CONVERSATION IS NUMBER ONE THE MENTAL HEALTH PIECE GENERALLY.

I THINK WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT JUST GIVEN HOW HARD THIS YEAR IS UNIQUELY FROM A MENTAL HEALTH STANDPOINT WHAT WE'RE DOING TO SET OURSELVES UP FOR SUCCESS.

BOTH IN TERMS OF THE TRANSITION BACK TO SCHOOL BUT IN SORT OF THE LONGER TERM AS WELL BECAUSE THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF TRAUMA I THINK CREATED AS A RESULT OF THE CURRENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IN VIRTUAL PLUS.

THERE'S BEEN SOME KIDS HAVE HAD GOOD EXPERIENCES AND SOME HAVE HAD CHALLENGES.

[2. Minutes from the December 14, 2020 Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting]

WE NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT AND HAVE A CONVERSATION AROUND THAT.

ANOTHER CONCERN I HAVE IS SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN OR PULLED THERE WAS DATA PUT OUT SORT OF LATE DECEMBER IN A BOARD BRIEF ABOUT GRADING AND THE GRADING IF THE RATE OF FAILURE HAS GONE UP QUITE A BIT.

THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF NEGATIVE REPERCUSSIONS ON THAT.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS BEFORE I MOVE AH THE NEXT THING ON BUBLTH OR FOR SCHOOL BOARD?

>> CAN I GET A MOTION?

>> SORRY.

I'M WORKING ON IT.

I MOVE.

>> AND I THINK I'M GETTING A SECOND FROM MARK LACY.

>> SECOND.

>> AWESOME.

ALL RIGHT.

LET ME GO DOWN THE LIST AND GET YOUR APPROVALS.

SO FIRST ON MY SCREEN IS D.

>> YES.

JULIA.

>> YES.

>> ZION.

>> YES.

>> EMILY.

>> YES >> OKAY.

SORRY.

KATHLEEN.

>> YEP.

>> LEE.

>> YES.

>>

>> YES.

>> LINDSEY.

>> YES.

>> MARK.

>> YES.

>> ASHA.

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

NICK.

>> APPROVED.

>>

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

AND DAPHNE.

>> YES.

>> AWESOME.

OKAY.

SO WE'RE MOVING RIGHT ALONG.

I THINK THIS WILL BE PRETTY QUICK.

SO AS I MENTIONED -- WAIT.

I'M NOT MUTED.

AS I MENTIONED THE SCOPE OF WORK WAS APPROVED.

[1. Agenda for the January 11, 2021 Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting (Part 2 of 2) ]

SO I JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT AGAIN SORT OF THE AREAS AND THEN JUST HAVE KIND OF A BRIEF DISCUSSION SO THAT WE CAN START THINKING ABOUT HOW WE MIGHT WANT TO BREAK OUT INTO SEPARATE COMMITTEES SO THAT WE CAN RESPOND WITH THE ACTION ITEMS THAT WE INCLUDED AND THEN THAT WILL BE SOMETHING THAT WE WORK ON OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS.

SO TO BE THINKING ABOUT.

SO ONE AREA THAT WE WERE GOING TO TALK ABOUT WERE THE VIRTUAL LEARNING IMPACTS.

SO WE JUST HAD, YOU KNOW, A DWIGHT UPDATE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT YOUNG SCHOLARS AND HOW THAT'S WORKING AND I THINK WE'VE HAD UPDATES GOING ON MORE THE PIECE ABOUT COUNSELING COULD ALSO BE INCLUDED AS PART OF OUR SORT OF REPORT BACK TO THE SCHOOL BOARD.

SO THAT WAS ONE OF THE AREAS.

THE OTHER WAS EQUITY ISSUES AND SPECIFICALLY IN THAT AREA, WE TALKED ABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKERS THAT WE WERE GOING TO HOST TO HELP US, YOU KNOW, BECOME MORE AND MORE INFORMED ABOUT HOW OTHER SCHOOL SYSTEMS ARE ADDRESSING IT.

WHAT THE ISSUES ARE.

COME UP WITH A RECOMMENDATION.

SO I THINK CLEARLY AS PART OF OUR BOARD REPORT WE WOULD WANT TO INCLUDE SUMMARIES FROM THESE GUEST SPEAKERS AND HOW THAT COULD ADDRESS SOME OF THE INEQUITIES IN THE PROGRAM.

WE ALSO TALK IN THAT SECTION ABOUT TESTING.

TESTING ENVIRONMENTS.

SO THAT'S ONE OF THE AREAS.

AND THEN ALSO THE K THROUGH 12 ROAD MAP.

WHERE WE TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, BEING ABLE TO BETTER DIFFERENTIATE AND ALSO MAKING SURE THAT THERE'S A PROGRAM THAT FOLLOWS STUDENTS FROM WHENEVER THEY ENTER ONE OF THESE PROGRAMS WHETHER IT'S YOUNG COLURES SUBJECT SPECIFIC, OR JUST GENERAL GIA AND HOW THEY GO THROUGH ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL AND WHAT

[00:35:04]

THAT LOOKS LIKE.

BECAUSE RIGHT NOW, I DON'T THINK ANY STUDENT OR PARENT REALLY HAS A GOOD UNDERSTANDING LIKE IF THEY PARTICIPATE IN THIRD GRADE ENGLISH LANGUAGE OR FOURTH GRADE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, LIKE, WHAT DOES THAT OPEN UP FOR THEM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL OR WHAT COULD THE OPPORTUNITIE BE, YOU KNOW, WHY MIGHT THEY WANT TO PURSUE THAT.

IT'S JUST THERE'S NOT REALLY A LOT OF INFORMATION.

SO I THINK THAT WAS THE THIRD PIECE.

SO I WAS KIND OF THINKING THAT WE COULD BREAK OUT THE COMMITTEES AND JUST WRITE OUR YEAR END REPORT -- WELL, I WRITE THE NORMAL YEAR END REPORT GIVING THE SUMMARY KIND OF WHAT WE WE DO EVERY MONTH BUT THEN I THOUGHT AS AN ADDENDUM TO THAT WE COULD FOCUS MORE ON THESE AREAS AND MY HOPE WAS THAT PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO PICK CERTAIN AREAS TO WORK ON.

SO FOR THOSE ON THE COMMITTEE BEFORE MAYBE YOU COULD JUST START OFF WITH A BRIEF CONVERSATION SO OTHER COMMITTEE MEMBERS HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT OUR FINAL WORK PRODUCT MIGHT BE.

I JUST THOUGHT WE'D SPEND TEN OR 15 MINUTES TALKING ABOUT THIS AND THEN KEEP COMING BACK TO IT AND HOPEFULLY START DRAFTING IN THE SPRING.

I MIGHT CALL ON A FORMER -- A LONG TIME COMMITTEE MEMBER IF SOMEBODY DOESN'T VOLUNTEER SO I'LL GIVE YOU GUYS A MINUTE.

CAN YOU SAY AGAIN WHAT THE GROUPS WERE?

>> VIRTUAL LEARNING IMPACTS, EQUITY ISSUES.

AND K THROUGH 12 ROAD MAP.

IN THOSE AREAS WE'RE ADDRESSING THE ACADEMIC AND THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL NEEDS ACROSS ALL OF THOSE AREAS SO THAT IS CONSISTENT ACROSS.

>> RIGHT.

>> SO I'LL GO AHEAD AND JUMP IN WITH WHAT WE'VE DEMON THE PAST.

>> OKAY.

>> IF YOU DON'T MIND.

>> SO IN THE PAST WHAT WE'VE DONE IS WE HAVE DIVIDED OURSELVES INTO ELEMENTARY, K 2 OR K 3 AND THEN FOUR, FIVE, UPPER ELEMENTARY AND THEN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL.

AND LOOKED AT ISSUES FACING DIFFERENT GROUPS.

THIS YEAR WE'VE DECIDED AND THEN EACH ONE OF THOSE SMALLER COMMITTEES WOULD COME -- WOULD MEET SEPARATELY, DISCUSS THE IMPACT OF VARIOUS ISSUES ON THEIR PARTICULAR GROUP AND THEN WRITE TWO TO THREE PAGE SUMMARY OF WORK THAT WE'VE DONE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND HOW IT RELATES TO AND AFFECTS THAT GROUP.

THIS YEAR INSTEAD OF DIVIDING OUT BY GRADE WE'RE MORE DIVIDING BY GENERAL TOPIC AND HOW IT AFFECTS STUDENTS THROUGHOUT.

AND SO, AGAIN, WE'D BE SEPARATING INTO GROUPS MEETING PERHAPS IN SMALLER GROUPS.

MAKE BREAKOUT ROOMS. TO DISCUSS THE VARIOUS SPEAKERS THAT WE'VE HAD COME THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO MAKE THE SCHOOL BOARD AND AGAIN ATTEND OF THE SMALLER WORKING GROUP MEETINGS WE WOULD PROVIDE MAYBE A TWO TO THREE PAGE SUMMARY OR BULLETED LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS THAT CAN BE ATTACHED -- THE ANNUAL REPORT FROM THIS COMMITTEE.

ASK SOME OF THE STAFF TO JOIN.

HAVING THE STAFF FAR TIS PATE IN THOSE SUBCOMMITTEES MAKES IT A BETTER CONVERSATION.

ANOTHER PIECE I WANT TO GET, I'LL SEND YOU A FOLLOW UP AND YOU CAN KIND OF LET ME KNOW WHAT IF YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT BEING ON ONE COMMITTEE OR SUBCOMMITTEE RATHER, ONE AREA, AND THEN WE'LL HOPEFULLY BE KIND OF EVENED OUT BUT FOR NEWER FOLKS ON THE COMMITTEE, YOU KNOW, ANY THOUGHTS? I MEAN, WE'VE ALSO USED POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS AND PRESENTED THOSE IN THE

[00:40:04]

PAST.

IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY TO BE WRITTEN, YOU KNOW, WE COULD THINK ABOUT THIS IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.

SO THIS IS KIND OF JUST ME INTRODUCING IT AND I'LL LET YOU GUYS UNDERSTOOD 8 ON IT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR IMMEDIATE CAMPEDS.

I LIKE THE POINT ABOUT STAFF PERSON JOINING EACH SMALL GROUP.

I'LL FIGURE OUT HOW WE COULD DO THE BREAKOUT ROOMS IN ZOOM.

I THINK THAT WOULD MAKE A LOT OF SENSE.

ANY OTHER THOUGHTS, GUYS?

>> YEAH.

JUST -- >> A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, YOU KNOW, I ACTUALLY SET UP A FIELD TRIP AND I THINK FROM THE COMMITTEE AND THE BOARD TO GO TO -- AND I MET WITH THE PRINCIPLE AND THEY GAY ME A TOUR AND TALKED TO SOME OF THE TEACHERS.

DOING SOME RESEARCH BY REACHING OUT TO A SCHOOL YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO OR TALK TO SOMEBODY ON THE STAFF I THINK THAT'S IN PLAY ALSO.

>> YEAH.

I WAS JUST GOING TO SECOND WHAT MARK SAID.

I WENT TO GW AND THE TAG COORDINATOR WAS VERY HELPFUL AND HELPED ME SIT IN ON SOME CLASSES AND OBSERVE.

I MET WITH THE PRINCIPAL AS WELL SO ACPS HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL IN SETTING THOSE THINGS UP.

>> ALL RIGHT.

JUST START THINKING ABOUT THAT.

IF WE HAVE TIME TO DO IT IN THE NEXT MEETING MAYBE WE CAN BREAK OUT INITIALLY JUST A LITTLE BIT AND THEN USE SOME OF THE SPRING MEETINGS PROBABLY TO BREAK OUT POSTED.

I GUESS I WANT TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY PUBLIC COMMENTS.

I KNOW THERE ARE TWO FOLKS LISTENING IN.

I THINK FOR THE FOLKS LISTENING IN, YOU CAN, LIKE, RAISE YOUR HAND OR.

>> YES.

IT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RAISE THEIR HAND IF THEY WANT TO SPEAK.

IN COMMENTS BUT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SERVICE.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING IN OUR OUR MEETING.

WE APPRECIATE IT.

ALL RIGHT.

IF THERE ARE NOT ANY OTHER PRESSING COMMENTS FROM ANYONE, OH, I DID HAVE VIRTUAL LEARNING UPDATES ON HERE.

I THINK WE GOT AT LEAST GOT SOME FROM THE YOUNG SCHOLARS PERSPECTIVE.

I'LL JUST THROW OUT ONE LAST QUESTION BEFORE I WRAP THE MEETING IF ANYBODY HAD ANYTHING BURNING THAT THEY WANTED TO REPORT BACK REGARDING THAT?

>> OKAY.

ALL RIGHT.

>> SORRY.

IT WASN'T ABOUT THE VIRTUAL LEARNING UPDATES.

JUST ABOUT ONE THING I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THAT WOULD APPROXIMATE INTERESTING IS TO POTENTIALLY HIGHLIGHT STUDENT VOICES WITHIN THE REPORT WHETHER THAT'S ON THE SIDE OF LEARNING OR INEQUITY ISSUES AND STUDENT EXPERIENCES, WHETHER THAT WOULD BE SEPARATE.

SOMETHING THAT I COULD HELP DO.

>> AWESOME.

>> INTERESTING TO HIGHLIGHT.

>> I LOVE IT.

YES.

AND THAT -- YOU KNOW, ONE THING THAT WE DID BEFORE AND I CAN TALK TO SUSAN A LITTLE BIT MORE OFF LINE ABOUT THIS.

BUT THERE ARE SOME CONSTRAINTS BECAUSE WE DID DO MOST OF THE WORK WITHIN THE COMMITTEE MEETING.

SOMETIMES THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF WORK OUTSIDE AND OBVIOUSLY WE CAN'T MEET NOW ANYWAYS BUT I THINK IT WAS YOU COULD ONLY HAVE TWO COMMITTEE MEMBERS MEET OTHERWISE IT WAS CONSIDERED A PUBLIC MEETING WHICH MADE THIS LITTLE TRICKY AND WE HAVE A FULL COMMITTEE NOW SO ONE OF THE THINGS WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO IS IF YOU WERE INTERESTED IN PURSUING THAT STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ALONG WITH SOMEONE ELSE, THAT COULD ALMOST BE LIKE A FOURTH COMMITTEE AND THEN W WOULD ROLL IN SO THAT WE'RE ABLE TO BREAK PEOPLE OUT.

THAT MOTH BE ONE WAY WE COULD DO THIS WHICH WOULD APPROXIMATE COOL.

>> I'LL MAKE A COMMENT THERE.

YOU COULD MEET WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ON THE COMMITTEE AND COME BACK TO THE

[00:45:07]

COMMITTEE AND REPORT OUT IN A WAY SO THAT YOU'RE NOT ENCOUPLE BETTERED BY THE FOIA RULES.

THAT'S JUST ONE WAY TO MAYBE CIRCUMVENT THEM SOMEWHAT.

I WOULD TO PULL PACK TO ZION AND THE QUESTIONS SHE WAS ASKING EARLIER ABILITY SCHOLARS AND HOW PARENTS WOULD KNOW ABOUT IT AND SHE WAS TALKING TO SOME PARENTS WHO MAYBE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT AT JOHN ADAMS. PERHAPS BECAUSE YOUNG SCHOLARS IS GOING TO BE COMING UNDER KIND OF TAG UMBRELLA WE MIGHT WANT TO I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S NEED ON THE COMMITTEE FOR FOLKS TO BECOME MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE QUALIFICATION PROCESS FOR YOUNG SCHOLARS AS WE ARE ON THE REGULAR TAG PROGRAM.

>> OKAY.

COOL.

>> ALL RIGHT.

I THINK THAT'S IT.

IT'S NICE TO SEE EVERYBODY.

TAKE CARE.

STAY WELL.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

ANDLY SEE YOU GUYS FEBRUARY 8TH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> FOR OUR NEXT MEETING.

>> ALL RIGHT.

BYE.
